  • Psychological Considerations For Body Composition Training

Episode #114 - Psychology in Body Transformations

    ***

This was a thoroughly enjoyable chat with the extremely knowledgable and experienced Christian Maurice. He gave me an insight in to what he does with his clientele in order to achieve body transformations. In this episode, we discuss:

    ***

The N=1 element to being a coach and why we should and shouldn’t listen to research papers and meta analysis. I personally find this extremely interesting as I’ll be the first to admit its hard to know right from wrong from a supplementation perspective these days. With so many dramatically different opinions, who should we believe and what should we apply.

    ***

Why clients aren’t compliant and what you need to do. It doesn’t matter how good your methods are, if your client isn’t compliant, they’re not going to get results. We talk about what to do when this is the case and what you need to focus on as a coach.

    ***

The importance of sleep and how it impacts our recovery, lifestyle and body composition. We all know sleep is important, but how does it impact your ability to get results when looking to lose body fat. What’s the best method of tracking sleep and does feeling well rested in the morning necessarily mean you slept well?

    ***

And finally, the most important piece of advice for personal trainers and coaches looking the gain their business. How Christian has built a successful and lucrative career despite keeping a low profile on social media. Is having a large social media necessary for growth and development?

  • Blood Markers, Supplementation and Industry Myths

Episode #113 - Dr Rosie Tarbuck
    ***
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It was an extremely interesting chat with a very reliable source. Rosie is a General Practitioner as well as competitive bodybuilder. She has extensive experience in working with the general population from a medical standpoint, but also frequently interprets blood work analysis for MediChecks.
    ***
In this episode, we discuss the impact that taking PED's can have on your blood markers, why getting fixated purely on Testosterone levels can be naive, how seeing you have low T levels can psychologically impact men and whether over the counter readily available supplements can have any impact on blood markers at all.
    ***
We also discuss what it's like to prep for bodybuilding shows whilst doing 12 hour shifts on a ward, how changes in sleep cycle impact training and what Rosie's peers think of her diet and lifestyle.
    ***
Finally I get a doctors perspective on common trends in the fitness industry and we explore how much is valid and what is generally pseudo science when it comes to seeing an improvement in health.

  • Shoulder Rehab Exercises

In Episode #112 I'm joined by personal trainer Ben Anderson. Ben has been putting up some awesome content on exercise mechanics and joint health so I thought it'd be cool to get him on the show and discuss considerations for shoulder rehabilitation.
    ***
As a rugby player, Ben suffered a lot from recurring shoulder issues. This lead to him educating himself about anatomy, biomechanics and the best way to train for joint longevity. We talk about often overlooked aspects of shoulder health and why it's so important to consider the equipment you use based on joint range of motion.

If you've been suffering from long standing shoulder issues and want to know what exercises are best for returning strength and range of motion, make sure you check this episode out. Now available on Spotify and iTunes

  • Elite Level Strength Programme Design

This weeks podcast sees the return of Coach Wodyn on the show. I’ve learned a tonne of cool stuff about strength and biomechanics from Andrzej and his approach to both training (and life) really interests me.

    ***

After watching Andrzej recently make some extremely impressive lifts, I thought it’d be cool to talk about how he structures his programme design and his approach to periodisation, assistance work and recovery.

    ***

When you get to an elite level, it you’re bound to reach a point of marginal gains. You have to consider all variables and the impact one lift can make on another, especially in powerlifting.

    ***

This is an awesome episode for anyone fascinated by strength training. This being said, Andrzej’s words of wisdom are extremely applicable for anyone who trains any discipline in the gym. His refreshing and insightful take on training and competing was great to hear.

  • Bridging the GP - PT gap

Episode #3 - Bridging the GP - PT gap with Dr Mike Banna

    ***

In episode #3 of the Reborn To Transform podcast we were joined by the GP who trains the GP’s Dr Mike Banna. We wanted to ask Mike if the information PT’s give to their client contradicts what he recommends in medical practice and whether the plethora of info out there is making his job easier or harder.

    ***

We then delve in to the need for research based nutritional programming and how much anecdotal evidence plays a part in getting people results. Is it a case of using common sense or do we need to be more thorough with what we tell the general public from nutrition and supplement perspective?

    ***

We also speak about Mike’s weight loss journey, how he lost weight, what methods worked well for him and what he now believes about nutrition after trying a variety of different approaches. The episode is then concluded with Jay and Mike going in to battle about cereal choices.

  • Programme Design Considerations

    Episode #109 - Programming Considerations

    ***

I was delighted by the response from the gen pop considerations podcast I did with James Sutton. It was great to get so many people giving feedback on how they found it useful and applicable. As this was the case, I wanted to continue with the same theme but this time in a solo outing.

    ***

Personal training can be a tough job. It’s hard enough to build a reputation and client base but even more frustrating when the latest influencer or coach is speaking in absolutes about how you should and shouldn’t train people. I wanted to shine some light on this situation by explaining exactly what I’d do and why with a “gen pop” client. I discuss how I evolved to this thought process and what you can do in order in improve your skill set as a coach.

    ***

I think as trainers it’s very important to absorb absolutely everything and then just observe. The awesome thing about being a trainer is that you get to learn every single day. See the gym as a lab; you don’t have to come up with crazy exercises but you should be watching how (and why) your clients move. Exercise design is very much like problem solving. The goal is to stimulate the tissue, the problem may be the restriction in the joint/tissue. The better you get at accommodating for this, the better you get as a trainer.

  • Developing A Growth Mindset

    Episode #2 - Developing A Growth Mindset

    ***

With both Oscar and Jay competing very successfully in their recent physique competitions, I wanted to sit down and discuss how they apply themselves mentally to improving their physique. Although I could have called this, how to develop a winning mindset, that would defeat the object with these guys. They’re not winners because they’re only competing against themselves, the accolades are just by product of their dedication.

    ***

In this episode, we go beyond the why behind bodybuilding and discuss how it’s more about identifying your purpose than the aesthetics. It’s about constantly moving forward and being committed to a process, not result. If you want to know how elite level athletes apply themselves mentally to achieve a goal, make sure you give this a listen.

  • Mobility, Stability, Strength

Episode #107 - Bridging the gap between prehabilitation drills and heavy lifting

    ***

I’ve been an advocate of prehab mobility and stability drills for a while. Although you can’t deny they’re useful for general joint health and maintenance, I couldn’t help but question whether bodyweight core stability drills were actually transferable to loaded barbell situations.

    ***

As this was a question I really wanted to explore further, I couldn’t think of anyone better to ask than Jordan. Not only is Jordan an incredibly strong athlete, he also has intensive knowledge and experience in spinal mechanics through working as a chiropractic clinician. In this podcast we explore how applicable these prehab drills are, the difference between strength and stability, how muscle function and muscle action dictates the effectiveness of assistance work, plus why context is king. It all depends on who you’re working with.

  • The Art Of Mindset Development

The art of mindset development with Ben Pakulski

    ***

The biggest limitation any of us have is in our minds. How we view ourselves and the world around us largely dictates our future and success. But what is success?

    ***

In episode #106 I ask Ben how he developed his way of thinking to go from stressed out bodybuilder to a stoic, loving person focused on happiness and longevity. We discuss what catalysed the change, how he integrated it in to his daily routine and the biggest influences on his personal development.

    ***

Ben also talks me through what enabled him to develop his business as both a personal trainer in his collage days and online entrepreneur. He talks me through what all personal trainers should focus on and the pre-requisites for success in this industry. This is not one to be missed if you’re looking to build a bullet proof mindset for success and lay lifelong foundations for happiness.

  • Deconstructing The Deadlift

Episode #105 - Deconstructing the Deadlift

    ***

If you know Luke, which you all will, you’ll be aware he’s a pretty smart guy. Last year I learned a tonne of really cool stuff from him which really changed my approach and thinking towards training.

    ***

I recently listen to one of Luke’s own podcasts with Skinny Gaz and last weeks guest James Sutton. It was an amazing episode but left me with a load of questions I wanted to ask Luke about regarding deadlifting and hip mechanics. So I did.
