Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Amanda Stevens about ALS-amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Amanda is the wife of Eric Stevens, a former St. Louis Rams football player diagnosed with ALS on August 27, 2019. Amanda is also the Executive Director of the axeALS Foundation.
While several Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for ALS exist, unfortunately, none of them have much impact on long-term survival and quality of life. Drugs in development are often out of the reach of most patients, even when these treatments seem promising.
To help patients with ALS find treatment as soon as possible, Amanda and Eric formed the axeALS Foundation to raise ALS awareness and support families with ALS.
Recently, the axeALS Foundation partnered with the Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS at Massachusetts General Hospital to establish a new Expanded Access Protocol (EAP) program at the University of California, Irvine. Under the direction of Namita Goyal, MD, Professor of Neurology, UCI School of Medicine, and Director of UCI Health ALS Services, the multiyear program will expand access to investigational drugs for 30 people living with ALS who do not qualify for clinical trials.
The axeALS Foundation has also helped create legislation such as the “Act for ALS” to increase expanded access to ALS patients to drugs in development.
Please watch this 25-minute interview with Amanda Stevens about her family’s struggle with ALS, the work of the axeALS Foundation, and hopes for improved futures for people with ALS.
axeALS will host a fundraiser with Athlete’s First in Newport Beach, CA, on June 12, 2023. Please attend if you can!

Welcome to The Art of Medicine, the program that explores the arts, business, and clinical aspects of the practice of medicine! I’m your host, Dr. Andrew Wilner.
As a physician, I see death related to cigarettes every day. With all the other health threats in the world, the risks of smoking often don’t make the front page. However, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Cigarette smoking causes almost half a million deaths in the US each year, more than motor vehicle accidents, firearms, alcohol, and illegal drug use combined.
Once people start smoking, it can be difficult to stop, in large part because of the addictive nature of nicotine.
Today, I had the pleasure of speaking with Brian Quigley. Brian is the CEO of Qnovia, a company with a unique approach to help people stop smoking. We discussed how difficult it is for people to stop smoking due to the physiologic dependence on nicotine coupled with behavioral addiction, such as having a cigarette with a cup of coffee. According to Brian, most people try and stop “cold turkey,” which is usually unsuccessful.
Please watch this 25-minute interview with Brian Quigley to learn more about a new strategy for smoking cessation.

Welcome to The Art of Medicine, the program that explores the arts, business, and clinical aspects of the practice of medicine! I’m your host, Dr. Andrew Wilner.
Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Awais Aftab. Dr. Aftab is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
In medical school, my favorite professor was a psychiatrist, and I’ve interviewed several psychiatrists for “The Art of Medicine.”
Dr. Awais was introduced to me by Dr. Ronald Pies, a renowned psychiatrist and author whom I interviewed on “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner” for Episode #63:
https://www.andrewwilner.com/post/a-psychiatrist-listens-and-writes
I’ve asked Dr. Aftab to discuss a strange phenomenon in our society—the opposition to psychiatry as a legitimate medical and scientific practice. Dr. Aftab will delve into this topic and offer suggestions on how psychiatrists and patients can better cope with those who don’t believe in psychiatry!
Please watch this 30-minute interview with Dr. Awais Aftab about modern psychiatry.

Welcome to The Art of Medicine, the program that explores the arts, business, and clinical aspects of the practice of medicine! I’m your host, Dr. Andrew Wilner.
Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Paul Leong, a pulmonologist and sleep physician from Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Leong observed that his patients often needed to submit to uncomfortable and sometimes painful procedures in order to receive the best diagnosis and treatment. To help his patients, he searched for a strategy to enable them to obtain the care they needed without so much discomfort.
Ultimately, Dr. Leong founded Smileyscope, a virtual reality approach to decrease pain from medical procedures! During this 30-minute interview, Dr. Leong will tell us where he got the idea, how he developed Smileyscope, and where it’s available.

Welcome to The Art of Medicine, the program that explores the arts, business, and clinical aspects of the practice of medicine! I’m your host, Dr. Andrew Wilner.
Today, I spoke with Joe Sherman, MD, pediatrician and physician coach. Many physician coaches are out there, and I’ve interviewed several for this program. But when I learned about Dr. Sherman’s extensive medical mission work in Uganda and Bolivia, I had to speak with him.
My own medical mission work in the Philippines started over ten years ago. Traipsing through the jungle to remote locations to treat indigenous people who had never seen a Western physician before was an amazing experience. It opened my eyes to a larger world beyond traditional private practice and academic medicine. There’s no doubt that the experience molded me into a better physician. It also raised questions about how best to deliver care globally to underserved areas.
Dr. Sherman explained that the benefits of a medical mission go both ways. While volunteer physicians and other healthcare workers provide free care, they receive intangible but priceless returns that stay with them for the rest of their lives. Dr. Sherman’s broad experience and thoughtful analysis come through during this interview.
When I asked Dr. Sherman whether a physician considering a medical mission should try it, his answer was an unequivocal “Yes!”
Please watch this 30-minute interview with Dr. Joe Sherman to learn why.

Welcome to The Art of Medicine, the program that explores the arts, business, and clinical aspects of the practice of medicine! I’m your host, Dr. Andrew Wilner.
On this program, I love to speak with physicians who have made important contributions to medical practice and with physician authors. My guest today, Dr. Ola Saugstad, fits both of these categories.
Dr. Saugstad is a pediatrician and neonatologist. He decided early in his career to investigate ways to help the most vulnerable of patients, newborn infants. He challenged the standard practice of administering 100% oxygen to all newborns who struggled to breathe, recognizing that too much oxygen could be harmful. It took decades of research into the pathophysiology of neonatal hypoxia for the medical community to accept his conclusions and incorporate them into practice guidelines. The result? Hundreds of thousands of babies worldwide are saved every year!
Dr. Saugstad relates his story in the engaging memoir, “Fighting for Air.” This new book is a fascinating read for those interested in the obstacles an independent thinker like Dr. Saugstad faced when challenging the status quo. It also provides a valuable behind-the-scenes look at scientific research.
To contact Dr. Saugstad, please call Dea Shandera-Hunter at 747.239.1715 or [email protected].

Many thanks to Steve Moffic, MD, writer and award-winning academic psychiatrist, for joining me on The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner. Dr. Moffic was introduced to me by Ronald Pies, MD, another psychiatrist and writer whom I interviewed in Episode #63. Dr. Pies recruited Dr. Moffic as a blogger for Psychiatric Times. Dr. Moffic has written on diverse topics including climate change, gaslighting and anti-semitism. He also creates weekly videos about “Psychiatry and Society.”
Dr. Moffic was a pioneer in applying managed care to people with mental health disorders. He led a program that tried to balance quality of care and financial constraints. Based on his experience, Dr. Moffic wrote a book on the ethical challenges of managed healthcare, “The Ethical Way: Challenges and Solutions for Managed Behavioral Healthcare.”
The controversy surrounding his approach led the President of the American Psychiatric Association to publicly pronounce Dr. Moffic “evil.”
On a more auspicious occasion, Dr. Moffic received the “Hero of Public Psychiatry” award from the American Psychiatric Association.
Please join us for a fascinating 30-minute discussion.
