Many thanks to Kathleen Donnelly Israel for joining me on today’s program. Kathleen served as the caregiver for her husband Ron, who endured 17 years of Parkinson’s disease. She shares her experiences with the medical system, nontraditional medicine, and efforts as a caregiver coping with her husband’s relentless physical decline. Although Ron had always been physically active and a triathlete, he “embraced his disease” while she desperately tried to “cure” it.

After her husband’s death, Kathleen walked the 500 miles of the Camino trail, which gave her time to reflect on her experience and inspiration to move forward with her life. She relates her journey in her new book, “Wisdom on the Camino: A Spiritual Journey Sharing Forgiveness and Possibilities to Inspire the Rest of Your Life.”

Many thanks to Serene Shereef, MD, a trauma surgeon who achieved work/life balance by working locum tenens. After her residency, Dr. Shereef struggled with balancing three children, a husband, and the demanding life of a trauma surgeon. She tried academic medicine but was miserable. She quit and tried a community practice, but it was the same story. Finally, with the help of a couple of coaches and a reassessment of her life’s priorities, she succeeded in finding a part-time position that allows her to practice surgery while offering quality time for her family and other interests. Thanks to Scott McDermott for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner!" 

Scott is an elite athlete, regularly competing in the Ultraman. This competition covers three days and makes a 26-mile marathon run look like a walk in the park. The Ultraman World Championships are held on the Big Island of Hawaii. The race includes a 6.2 mile ocean swim, 261.4 mile bike ride, and 52.4 mile run. What a test of human endurance! The prize? The thrill of competition, a sweaty tee-shirt, and a wet bathing suit!

In 2015, Scott experienced every athlete's nightmare. His bike skidded in the rain, and he crashed. Three days later, he woke up in an intensive care unit with a severe traumatic brain injury requiring neurosurgery, a fractured shoulder, wrist, and a variety of other injuries. 

After returning home, Scott struggled to run his previously successful 15,000-square-foot gym. Finally, the COVID pandemic dealt a death blow to his business.

With the help of an amazingly supportive wife, friends, an extensive medical team, and three years of cognitive and physical rehabilitation, Scott recovered, started a new business and thrives as a fitness trainer and motivator. He has also returned to the Ultraman World Championships. Wow!

Thanks to Robert Snyder, DPM, and Robert Mueller, the General Manger of Reddress, for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner" to discuss "Actigraft," a novel wound healing product. I first heard about Actigraft from a news report that Reddress had donated several hundred units to Ukraine to assist with civilian and military casualties. 

An Israeli, Dr. Igal Kushner, invented Actigraft, and his son, Alon Kushnir, now the Reddress CEO, brought it to market. Headquarters are in Florida, and the product is cleared for marketing by the FDA for wound care.

Actigraft is intriguing because it relies on the patient's blood to make a patch that assists in wound healing. As a long-time scuba diver, I trained in hyperbaric medicine. Hyperbaric medicine is used to treat divers who develop the bends, but hyperbarics is also an adjunctive treatment for nonhealing wounds. When I practiced at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, I treated several patients with nonhealing wounds with hyperbaric medicine, so I was interested in learning more about this product.
