How do we separate health hype from medical reality?
In episode #142 of The Art of Medicine, I spoke with Matt Hongoltz-Hetling about the history of "quack" medicine. Today, I’m joined by Dr. Bobby Dubois to discuss how we can protect ourselves from modern snake oil.
About Our Guest:
We live in an era where "miracle" cures are sold daily by celebrities and self-proclaimed experts. These treatments often prey on desperation and limited health literacy, resulting in physical harm and financial loss. Dr. Bobby shares his insights on how to identify what actually works in healthcare and how he maintains his own peak performance as a ranch owner and triathlete.

Many thanks to Stanley Bronstein, CPA, attorney, author of the 7 “Ways of Excellence” books, and leader of the Million Pound Weight Loss Challenge. One day, when Stanley was about to turn 50 years old, he realized that he was going to die, very soon, if he didn’t do something about the 350 pounds he was carrying around. He lost 100 pounds with Weight Watchers, but put most of it back on. Finally, he discovered a more permanent solution.
Today, Stanley is a trim 145, and he’s maintained that slender frame for more than 15 years. He makes sure his dogs have a healthy diet, too.
Stanley found the secret to weight loss, and he’s eager to share it.

Many thanks to Ray Hartgen, a cancer survivor and author of several books, including "Me, Myself, and My Multiple Myeloma," for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner." Ray shared his journey with multiple myeloma that included a stem cell transplant six years ago. He continues to receive regular treatments to keep the cancer at bay. His personal experience has led him to become an active cancer patient advocate.
During our 30-minute discussion, Ray emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to health, engaging with the community, and the role of support groups and caregivers in cancer treatment. Ray also shared the excitement of writing his first novel, "Outflanked." Ray is a serious musician who uses music as a coping strategy and source of motivation.
Ray's nonfiction books include "Indy 500" and "Immaculate: How the Steelers Saved Pittsburgh.
Ray encouraged everyone to check in with their doctors at least once a year for a physical examination. His cancer was discovered on a routine blood test and might have gone unnoticed had he not shown up for his annual physical exam!
Ray invites anyone struggling with cancer or caregivers to contact him for emotional support. He can be reached at his website: www.rayhartjen.com

Many thanks to Dr. Michael Guadagnino, author of the new book “Fitness: 50,60,70, and Beyond.” Dr. Guadagnino is a fitness enthusiast and chiropractic practitioner for more than 30 years.
During our 20-minute interview, Dr. Guadagnino shared his background in chiropractic medicine and fitness, emphasizing his extensive experience and focus on wellness for older adults. We discussed the challenges of exercising as one ages or in the presence of chronic illness, the importance of keeping a positive mindset, the advantage of writing down goals, and the value of exercise as an injury prevention strategy.
Dr. Guadagnino stressed the importance of staying active. He emphasized the importance of warming up before exercise and observed that even stretching counts as exercise. Balance exercises can help prevent falls and injuries and are especially important as people age. Even small daily activities like walking or swimming are beneficial and can improve well-being.
Dr. Guadagnino added that supplements may be helpful but are merely a “supplement” to regular physical activity and nutritious meals.
To learn more, please check out Dr. Guadagnino’s new book, “Fitness Over 50, 60, 70, and Beyond.” You can find more information or contact him at his website: https://drguadbook.com

Many thanks to Edward Kondrot, MD, an ophthalmologic surgeon who also practices homeopathic medicine. He completed a traditional ophthalmologic residency in 1981 and is also a Doctor of Homeopathic Therapeutics (DHt). Dr. Kondrot also regularly performs medical mission work in Africa. He’s also worked locum tenens performing ophthalmologic disability evaluations in veterans.
Dr. Kondrot is the author of five best-selling books on eye disease and has an active Substack question and answer program. He sees many patients who have not found an effective treatment with conventional medicine and turn to him for alternatives and hope. His interest in homeopathy was kindled when it offered him a cure for his adult-onset asthma, which had not responded to conventional therapy.
During our 20-minute conversation, Dr. Kondrot shared the joy he experiences from helping patients preserve or regain their sight. He is a strong proponent of a healthy and nutritious diet to optimize physical function and promote healthy aging.

Many thanks to Logan Foltz, MD, EA, for joining me on today’s episode of “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.” Logan has a unique professional story. After completing his psychiatry residency, he initially worked as an inpatient psychiatrist.
Logan discovered how few tools psychiatrists possessed to turn their patients’ lives around. He also found his work schedule as physically grueling as it was emotionally unrewarding. He concluded he needed better work/life balance.
While preparing his own tax return, Logan became fascinated with the internal revenue service tax code. Using locum tenens as a bridge, Logan gradually transitioned to become a full-time tax specialist. The tangible reality of numbers appealed to him, and the complexity of the tax code challenged his intellect.
Logan loved helping his fellow physicians move towards their goals of financial independence. To qualify as a tax professional, he passed the examinations required to earn his “Enrolled Agent” (EA) designation, the IRS’s highest credential.
Please join us for this fascinating 30-minute conversation as Logan shares his insights into the tax implications of the locum tenens lifestyle. If you are practicing locums and need to know the difference between a W2 and a 1099, Logan can help.

Many thanks to neurologist and author Dr. Carolyn Larkin Taylor for joining me as a guest on “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.” Dr. Taylor recently published “Whispers of the Mind,” a collection of essays that describes the extreme challenges faced by her patients, poignant moments, and, finally, a concession to the fragility of life —a concession that, frankly, is difficult for many physicians.
Dr. Taylor was in the first class of women who graduated from Notre Dame. After graduation, she trained as an optometrist for four years and then practiced for three years. She realized she wanted to do more and decided to go to medical school to become an ophthalmologist. She attended Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia, PA. But when she rotated on neurology, she “fell in love with it.”
Dr. Taylor ditched ophthalmology and completed her neurology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. She recently worked as a neurologist in Seattle and flew to Alaska a couple of days a month to offer neurology clinics there. Currently, she works at the VA and performs disability evaluations for veterans who have suffered traumatic brain injury.
Dr. Taylor stated that her book “chronicles my
Journey and growth as both a neurologist and human being.”
Dr. Taylor always kept a journal, which allowed her to illustrate her patient anecdotes with incredible detail, both physical and emotional. Despite the gravity of her subject matter, she found many of her patients’ stories inspiring. She also shares stories of her golden retriever, Prancer, who accompanied her to work and had a knack for comforting patients.
We had a fascinating 40-minute discussion. To learn more or to contact Dr. Taylor, please visit her website: https://www.carolynlarkintaylorauthor.com

Many thanks to Matthew Hermann, MD, a radiologist and Founder of the teleradiology company Right Read MD. Dr. Hermann began his career as a conventional radiologist but soon saw the virtues and opportunities of off-site practice.
Now based in Puerto Rico, he leads a team of physicians who provide high-quality radiology care to multiple hospitals. Matt loves Puerto Rico’s culture and doesn’t object to their low tax rates either!
During our 40-minute discussion, Dr. Hermann discussed the potential downsides of conventional telemedicine models. For example, groups that are incentivized solely by productivity, especially those run by private equity companies, may yield suboptimal results.
Radiologists working at home can also feel isolated and miss out on learning from colleagues that would occur in a more traditional patient care setting. Dr. Hermann explored whether teleradiology is a good long-term career option. While today’s demand is great, it’s unclear what the future holds for this type of medical service.
Dr. Hermann emphasized the hidden value of dedicated on-site radiologists who can develop professional relationships with referring physicians. Relationships between radiologists and surgeons, for example, have proven to influence surgical decision-making.
However, when hospitals lack the resources for permanent on-site radiologists, teleradiology becomes a clinically necessary and attractive option. Chart access for teleradiologists, along with a focus on patient care rather than pure productivity, can help mitigate the negatives of operating off-site.
Dr. Hermann’s company handles licensing and credentialing. He also ensures that radiologists on his team are appropriately compensated. Right Read MD continues to grow.
