Google has made its hand detection and tracking tech open-source, giving developers the opportunity to poke around in the tech’s code and see what makes it tick.

There’s plenty that makes the newly unveiled tech interesting for developers in the VR and AR space, particularly in that it manages to tackle real-time, high-fidelity hand and finger tracking on mobile phone hardware, rather than the powerful desktop setup comparable tech might require.

One of the items on the to-do list for the developers behind the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV is reworking some of the game's older bits of content to be less tedious to play through, a rework being developed alongside a New Game+ mode for a later patch.

Though Final Fantasy XIV bounced back from a rocky start with its A Realm Reborn relaunch in 2013, some of the earlier parts of the game can be tedious to play through nowadays, especially as more and more expansions are launched and bring new content to the latter half of the game.

Net revenue and net bookings were both down year-over-year at Activision Blizzard, but the company says that the quarter still outperformed its expectations.

Net revenue for Q2 2019 came in at $1.396 billion overall, down from last year’s $1.641 billion but still above the $1.315 billion prediction it previously published for this quarter. Overall, $1.09 billion of that net revenue came from digital sources.

In its Q2 report, Activision Blizzard calls out some of its flagship franchises at Activision, Blizzard, and King alike for year-over-year or quarter-over-quarter boosts in engagement and active user. Likewise the money those players spent on in-game transactions made up a significant portion of the company’s earnings.

Walmart has told employees to remove advertising and displays that reference violence, including those promoting video games.

Although the company didn't explicitly link the move to the recent mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, the first of which took place in a Walmart store and left 22 people dead and 24 others injured, the decision appears to be a direct response to those incidents.

Addressing the nation on Monday, U.S. president Donald Trump suggested the "glorification of violence" in society was responsible for the recent spate of shootings, and blamed "the gruesome and grisly video games that are now commonplace" for propagating that violent ideology.

Now, mere days after that White House address, Walmart has instructed staff (via a notice that's been circulating on social media) to review their store for "any signing or displays that contain violent images or aggressive behavior," before removing or turning off those offensive items.

The Australian Classification Board (ACB) is working to have all versions of DayZ banned in the country for promoting cannabis use.

Easier this week, we reported that the ACB had refused to sanction a physical release of the title, despite the fact a digital version of the survival shooter had previously been approved for sale on multiple occasions.

According to Kotaku Australia, the ACB is now attempting to have the game pulled from sale entirely, which could mean an unceremonious end to the planned physical edition due to be published by Five Star Games, and the digital version that's been out in the wild for years.

ESPN and ABC have delayed the broadcast of an Apex Legends tournament that was set to air this weekend, a decision ABC says was made out of respect to those impacted by last week’s mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

An email shared by Rod Breslau on Twitter notes the delay, and the decision was confirmed by sources speaking to Bloomberg shortly after. The decision sees the ESPN broadcast planned for this weekend pushed into October, though the event will still be up on digital sources this weekend as planned.

It’s not uncommon for media organizations to trim violent content from their schedules following tragedies like this. However, it is worth noting that this particular alteration comes as politicians in the United States have publicly blamed video games for fostering a culture of violence in discussions about these recent mass shootings.

That includes comments from US President Donald Trump blaming video games for “glorification of violence” in society, despite studies that have found no link between games and aggression as well as no similar correlation in other countries.

Epic Games is being sued over its handling of a security breach that could've exposed the accounts and personal information of millions of Fortnite players.

The vulnerabilities were detailed by cybersecurity company Check Point back in January, and were the result of a series of bugs and flaws present in the way Epic processed user account logins.

Although Epic has since fixed the issue, the company has now been hit with a class-action lawsuit filed by Franklin D. Azar & Associates in U.S. District Court in North Carolina.

Valve has tweaked the approval process for Steam Workshop submissions, adding a human element to the second step of the process for “certain Workshops.”

The new approval process itself is detailed in a short post on Steam’s support portal, and was spotted in action over the weekend by users on the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive subreddit. According to a number of avid CS:GO players in that thread, scam submissions had become an issue in the game’s user-made content portal, and this boost in moderation will help curb that.
