This past week I sat down with an inspiring 18-year-old woman who a friend is mentoring. She is starting a nursing program, but is totally unsure about what she wants to do. She has TONS of ideas and career paths that she is interested in, but doesn't know which is the RIGHT path. This conversation got me thinking about my own journey, and with all of its twists and turns I realized, I had NO IDEA what I wanted or what I was doing when I chose my first major. And...I honestly still have no idea what I am doing. Maybe you can relate. 

If so, this episode is your reminder that you don't have to have it all figured out. The path you choose is not "right" or "wrong." Its not your FOREVER. You aren't stuck there. If you chose a unit that you don't like, you do not have to stay there for X amount of time. But I also want to remind you that you are EXACTLY where you need to be right now, and there are lessons wherever you find yourself. Life is about the journey, not the milestones or goals along the way. It is about how you got there.

Okay gang, nursing is HARD right now. We are dodging endless obstacles, managing immense overwhelm, and navigating understaffing combined with over-working. Unfortunately, I can't fix the state of the world, but I CAN offer a practice that I have found incredibly helpful while trying to manage my own experience. Enter: MINDFULNESS. 

I know, I know. Mindfulness is a buzzword thrown around everywhere, and the practice may sound a little out-there. "Oh, I just need to be more present with my experience and everything will be better?!" Short answer, no. It does take some true effort and practice, but, legitimate research has backed this practice over and over again. So in this episode, we discuss a few different ways you can practice mindfulness in your everyday life, both at work and at home.

On this week's episode I sat down with Certified Holistic Nutritionist and podcast host Corinne Angelica to chat all things HORMONAL HEALTH, specifically geared towards nurses.

Guys, I don't know about you, but I, for one, learned NOTHING about my hormones in health class. They told us all about peer pressure and provided plenty of scare tactics about avoiding pregnancy, but no one told me that my hormones were the key to LITERALLY everything in my body. Nor did they mention that many of the choices I have been making in my day-to-day life have a HUGE impact on those hormones. Oh, and not to mention, that the birth control they push at very young ages is actually masking the underlying issues, not helping them.

I could go on and on. Maybe it's just me, but from what I have been hearing from you guys, I am thinking I'm not alone. Here's where Corinne enters the scene. Gang...nursing is HARD right now, and I don't know about you guys, but I am freaking TIRED. Today we are here to first RANT about these frustrations, discuss the current state of things in nursing, and reflect on the nursing shortage, but also to highlight the incredible OPPORTUNITY for the future of nursing. 

As Sam Cooke said, "a change is gonna come," and nurses are the drivers and shakers behind these changes today. In unprecedented times with unbelievable challenges, we have a chance to change the backbone of this profession and make it into a career that is worth sticking around for. 

No more "sacred cows" or "the way things have always been done." HELL NO. As The Nursing Co-op mission says, we are changing nursing culture for the better IN REAL TIME. 

We are also discussing a new campaign launching in quarter one of 2022 that we are calling "HumansNotHeroes" (we will be releasing more on this in the coming weeks here and @ashley_nursingcoop). This is an opportunity for all of us to share our stories of love, loss, trauma, and triumph during this pandemic that highlight our HUMANITY, and share each of our ideas for the resources, services, administrative changes, and policy changes that we believe would help us get to the other side of this pandemic. What do nurses and healthcare workers NEED to keep them in the profession, what actions would help you feel more valued, what could your family do to support you? I want to hear ANYTHING and EVERYTHING!

Over time, I think we can document our experiences in a powerful way that allows us to unapologetically share our VOICE and give true perspective to this pandemic experience. AND together, we can start to answer the question "what do healthcare workers actually need to get through this?" and take true ACTION in making the tools and resources you ask for available to you, and lay the groundwork for future generations of healthcare workers along the way.
