Madeline Crowley, Senior DNA Analyst, took the stand today in the Brendan Banfield murder trial in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Banfield, a former IRS Criminal Investigation agent, faces four counts of aggravated murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and child abuse charges in the February 24, 2023 deaths of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan. Prosecutors allege Banfield and the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, were having an affair and conspired to lure Ryan to their Herndon home using a fake profile on a sexual fetish website — then killed both victims and staged it as a home invasion.
Magalhães has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is cooperating with prosecutors in exchange for a recommendation of time served. The defense maintains that digital forensic evidence shows Christine Banfield controlled her own devices and that investigators who contradicted the catfishing theory were reassigned.
If convicted on all counts, Banfield faces life in prison without parole plus 13 additional years. The trial is expected to last four weeks.

Douglas Gudakunst, Fingerprint Specialist with the Fairfax County Police Department, took the stand in the murder trial of Brendan Banfield, the former IRS agent charged with four counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan. Prosecutors allege Banfield and the family's au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, lured Ryan to their Herndon home through a fetish website and staged the killings as a home invasion.
The defense argues digital forensics contradict the catfishing theory and that investigators who disagreed were reassigned. Banfield faces life without parole if convicted. The four-week trial continues in Fairfax County.

Day 2 of the Brendan Banfield murder trial was all about one thing: destroying the credibility of star witness Juliana Peres Magalhães.
Defense attorney John Carroll spent hours reading letters Magalhães wrote from jail — letters in which she promised Banfield she wouldn't cooperate, told his mother she would "give my life for his" and "take the blame for both of us," and complained about facing life in prison "for someone."
Then came the Netflix bombshell. Letters revealed Magalhães has been negotiating with Netflix and other production companies about selling her story. She admitted on the stand that media producers are now paying her commissary after Banfield's family stopped covering her expenses. In a March 2025 letter to her mother, she wrote: "We do deserve something."
Magalhães testified she finally cooperated because she couldn't carry the guilt anymore. But the defense painted a different picture: she only flipped after Banfield was arrested in September 2024, after she was hospitalized for 10 days from stress, and after his family cut off financial support.
Carroll also pressed Magalhães on the FetLife messages at the center of the case. She repeatedly said she couldn't remember which messages were written by her and which were written by Banfield — a potential problem for the prosecution's catfishing theory.
But Magalhães had one moment that cut through the noise. When Carroll told her she was "holding the truth yourself and no one else knew," she fired back: "Well, Brendan does."
Magalhães finished her testimony today and is subject to recall. The prosecution says blood evidence will corroborate her account. The defense says she's a compromised witness who lied for a year and is now being paid to tell a story that keeps her out of prison.
Banfield has pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, felony child abuse, and felony child cruelty. If convicted on all counts, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 13 additional years. The trial is expected to last four weeks.

The prosecution says Brendan Banfield planned an elaborate double murder. But their own expert contradicted their theory — and was transferred. Their lead detective was reassigned. Their prosecutor was removed. They had 24 different theories until the au pair flipped. Defense attorney Bob Motta joins the Banfield Channel to break down exactly where this case bleeds — and how you destroy the star witness who holds it together.
Officer Brendan Miller — the department's digital forensics expert — concluded Christine Banfield controlled the FetLife account. Not her husband. The University of Alabama peer-reviewed his findings and confirmed them. Then Miller was transferred out of the unit. According to court testimony, he was told he'd never work another digital forensics case in the bureau. The lead homicide detective was reassigned. Prosecutor Eric Clingan was removed after being cited for drinking at 8 a.m. Clingan admitted on the record that 12 homicide detectives had 24 different theories before Juliana gave her proffer.
Bob explains how you weave all of that into a narrative of investigative failure that makes jurors question everything. He breaks down how to neutralize the framed photo evidence prosecutors treat as a smoking gun. He explains how to flip Banfield's IRS criminal investigator background from liability to asset. He addresses what it means that Judge Azcarate excluded the child's forensic interview.
Then we get to Juliana Peres Magalhaes. She's the prosecution's entire case. She spent a year telling police the same story Brendan did. Then she got a deal: plead to manslaughter, time served, go home to Brazil. Her sentencing is after Banfield's trial to ensure cooperation. From jail, she wrote that she was "heartbroken for doing this to Brendan" and that she still loved him.
Bob explains how to frame a year-long lie for the jury. How to weaponize that jailhouse letter on cross-examination. How to make jurors understand exactly what she received in exchange for her testimony. The prosecution is positioning Juliana as a reluctant participant who was told it was "too late to back out." Bob dismantles that framing and identifies the biggest mistakes defense attorneys make with cooperating witnesses.
If Juliana falls apart on the stand, what does the prosecution have left? Subscribe for complete trial coverage.

A pediatric nurse stabbed to death. A stranger shot twice by two different guns. A 4-year-old waiting in the basement to go to the zoo. And a husband who says he's innocent.
The Au Pair Affair Murder Trial of Brendan Banfield is your complete source for daily coverage, analysis, and breakdown of one of the most anticipated murder trials of 2026.
On February 24, 2023, Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan were found dead inside the Banfield home in Herndon, Virginia. Prosecutors allege Brendan Banfield — an IRS criminal investigator — and the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, were having an affair and conspired to murder his wife. The alleged weapon? A fake profile on FetLife, a sexual fetish website, used to lure Ryan to the house as an unwitting patsy in a staged home invasion.
But this case is far from simple.
The prosecution's own digital forensics expert concluded Christine Banfield — not her husband — appeared to be controlling the FetLife account. His findings were peer-reviewed and confirmed. Then he was transferred out of the unit. The lead homicide detective who disagreed with command staff's theory was moved off the case. The lead prosecutor was removed after being cited for drinking at 8 a.m.
Now the state's entire case rests on Juliana Peres Magalhaes — who changed her story after a year in jail and took a plea deal that lets her walk free if she testifies against Banfield. She wrote to her mother from jail: "I'm heartbroken for doing this to Brendan... I want to be with you again."
What you'll get from this podcast:
Christine Banfield was a nurse who spent her career helping sexual assault survivors. Joseph Ryan was a man looking for connection who walked into a house he never should have entered. Both are dead. Somebody is responsible.
Did Brendan Banfield orchestrate an elaborate murder plot with his young mistress? Or did investigators lock onto a theory before the evidence supported it — and punish anyone who disagreed?
