Juliana Peres Magalhaes, former Banfield au pair, continued to be cross-examined on the stand today in the Brendan Banfield murder trial in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Banfield, a former IRS Criminal Investigation agent, faces four counts of aggravated murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and child abuse charges in the February 24, 2023 deaths of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan. Prosecutors allege Banfield and the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, were having an affair and conspired to lure Ryan to their Herndon home using a fake profile on a sexual fetish website — then killed both victims and staged it as a home invasion.
Magalhães has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is cooperating with prosecutors in exchange for a recommendation of time served. The defense maintains that digital forensic evidence shows Christine Banfield controlled her own devices and that investigators who contradicted the catfishing theory were reassigned.
If convicted on all counts, Banfield faces life in prison without parole plus 13 additional years. The trial is expected to last four weeks.

The prosecution says Brendan Banfield planned an elaborate double murder. But their own expert contradicted their theory — and was transferred. Their lead detective was reassigned. Their prosecutor was removed. They had 24 different theories until the au pair flipped. So where does reasonable doubt live?
Defense attorney Bob Motta joins the Banfield Channel to break down the prosecution's case from the perspective of someone who knows how to destroy it. This is the defense playbook.
Officer Brendan Miller concluded Christine Banfield controlled the FetLife account, not her husband. The University of Alabama confirmed his findings. Then Miller was told he'd never work another digital forensics case in the bureau. Motta explains how you use that in front of a jury — and how you build a narrative of investigative failure that makes jurors question everything.
The prosecution points to the framed photo found eight months after the murders. They're using Banfield's IRS criminal investigator background against him. Motta explains how the defense neutralizes the photo and flips the law enforcement narrative into an asset.
Judge Azcarate excluded the child's forensic interview. Eric Clingan admitted to 24 different theories on the record. The timeline to charge Banfield stretched to 19 months. Motta identifies exactly where this case breaks down — and what reasonable doubt looks like in closing arguments.
If you want to understand how the defense sees this trial, this is the interview. Subscribe for complete coverage.

Day 1 of the Brendan Banfield murder trial delivered explosive testimony from the prosecution's star witness — Juliana Peres Magalhães, the Brazilian au pair who was having an affair with Banfield and has admitted to firing one of the shots that killed Joseph Ryan.
Magalhães testified that Banfield told her in October 2022 he wanted to "get rid of" his wife Christine because he didn't want to pay for a divorce or share custody of their daughter. She described how they allegedly created a fake profile on FetLife using Christine's identity to lure Ryan to the home — where prosecutors say he was set up to be framed as an intruder.
According to Magalhães, on the morning of February 24, 2023, Banfield shot Ryan in the head, then stabbed Christine repeatedly in the neck while their 4-year-old daughter waited in the basement. Magalhães testified she shot Ryan a second time at Banfield's direction.
The defense pushed back hard, telling jurors that digital forensics show Christine was the one communicating with Ryan — and that investigators who supported that finding were transferred or reassigned. Defense attorney John Carroll accused prosecutors of using Magalhães's vulnerable position as an immigrant to flip her against his client.
Prosecutors say the blood evidence will prove Banfield's guilt. The defense says the catfishing theory was built on lies.
Banfield has pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, felony child abuse, and felony child cruelty. If convicted on all counts, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 13 additional years. The trial is expected to last four weeks.

The Brendan Banfield murder trial is underway — and retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer is here to break down the investigation problems, the star witness credibility issues, and what the jury should be watching for. Plus: explosive new developments in the Nick Reiner case.
Brendan Banfield faces four counts of aggravated murder for allegedly orchestrating the February 2023 killings of his wife Christine and Joseph Ryan with help from the family's au pair Juliana Peres Magalhaes. But the prosecution's own digital forensics expert concluded Christine controlled the FetLife account — not Brendan. Officer Brendan Miller's findings were peer-reviewed and confirmed. Then he was transferred out of the unit. The lead detective was reassigned. The original prosecutor was removed after being found drinking at 8 a.m.
Now the entire case rests on Juliana, who changed her story after a year in jail and took a plea deal that sends her home to Brazil. She wrote from jail that she was "heartbroken" for what she was doing to Brendan and that she loved him. Her sentencing is scheduled after his trial to ensure continued cooperation.
Coffindaffer also examines the Nick Reiner case, where sources say the accused admits killing his parents but claims he's the victim of a conspiracy. His schizoaffective medication was changed a month before the murders. The weapon is missing. The autopsy is sealed.
Both cases raise critical questions about witness credibility, investigation integrity, and what happens when the evidence doesn't support the theory. Subscribe for daily Banfield trial coverage.

A pediatric nurse stabbed to death. A stranger shot twice by two different guns. A 4-year-old waiting in the basement to go to the zoo. And a husband who says he's innocent.
The Au Pair Affair Murder Trial of Brendan Banfield is your complete source for daily coverage, analysis, and breakdown of one of the most anticipated murder trials of 2026.
On February 24, 2023, Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan were found dead inside the Banfield home in Herndon, Virginia. Prosecutors allege Brendan Banfield — an IRS criminal investigator — and the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, were having an affair and conspired to murder his wife. The alleged weapon? A fake profile on FetLife, a sexual fetish website, used to lure Ryan to the house as an unwitting patsy in a staged home invasion.
But this case is far from simple.
The prosecution's own digital forensics expert concluded Christine Banfield — not her husband — appeared to be controlling the FetLife account. His findings were peer-reviewed and confirmed. Then he was transferred out of the unit. The lead homicide detective who disagreed with command staff's theory was moved off the case. The lead prosecutor was removed after being cited for drinking at 8 a.m.
Now the state's entire case rests on Juliana Peres Magalhaes — who changed her story after a year in jail and took a plea deal that lets her walk free if she testifies against Banfield. She wrote to her mother from jail: "I'm heartbroken for doing this to Brendan... I want to be with you again."
What you'll get from this podcast:
Christine Banfield was a nurse who spent her career helping sexual assault survivors. Joseph Ryan was a man looking for connection who walked into a house he never should have entered. Both are dead. Somebody is responsible.
Did Brendan Banfield orchestrate an elaborate murder plot with his young mistress? Or did investigators lock onto a theory before the evidence supported it — and punish anyone who disagreed?
