Today we are going to Ruminate on Romans 12:2

Our normal bent is to copy and follow the behavior and customs of the world. We are naturally bent to follow the crowd and go where our culture goes whether in politics or religion or whatever beliefs they communicate.

We tend to believe what is most generally accepted by those around us. Whatever group we are in shapes what we believe.

Paul in this passage calls us to not let the people around us so much, especially not the behaviors and customs this world, shape us, but to let God transform us by changing the way we think.

There is an intentional decision that needs to be made by every individual: “Will I allow God to change the way I think?”

Today we are ruminating on Romans 8:7-8

Our purpose on this earth is both to please God and to enjoy Him. That is the basic text of the Westminster Shorter Catechism. They ask the question, “What is the chief end of man?” and respond with the answer, “Man’s chief end is to both glorify God and to enjoy him forever.”

We are only able to glorify God and enjoy Him forever if we have by faith believed in Jesus Christ.

Today is a continuation of the last Ruminate. We will read both Romans 8:5-6 but the bulk of our ruminating on Romans 8:5 is in the previous day, so be sure to give that a listen.

Apart from Christ every person exists in a spiritual state of death, unable to please God as the next few verses in Romans 8 talk about. This is the true reality for those who have not submitted their lives to Christ and by faith believed in Him.

But, for the child of God, the one who believes in Jesus Christ and has received adoption into the family of God to be called His child, this person experiences life and peace.

Today we will ruminate on Romans 8:5.

There is an either/or reality in this verse. You are either dominated by the sinful nature or controlled by the Holy Spirit.

The interesting thing about this is every individual’s default is to be dominated by the sinful nature. That is who every person apart from Christ is. That is our nature…so we naturally think about sinful things. That is our natural bent.

BUT. Those who have surrendered to Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior are controlled by the Holy Spirit. Submission to God means you are allowing the Holy Spirit of God to control your thoughts and you think about things that please the Spirit.

Where your thoughts go, so goes your life. Thoughts are powerful. What we think about matters. And what we think about is impacted deeply by what we allow to influence us most. Are we surrendering to our sinful nature or have we been transformed by the renewing of our mind so that we are thinking things that please the Spirit?
