A boat-building workshop in London, Ont., is not only teaching youth how to put together a boat in just five days, it's also providing valuable skills they can take into adulthood.
As part of the Youth Empowerment Program run by the Northwest London Resource Centre (NLRC), eight students between 14 to 17 years old took part in a week-long workshop to build a boat they can eventually launch on the lake.
The program is run in collaboration with Stem2Stern, a community boat-building organization that ran the same workshop at the Neighbourhood Resource Association of Westminster Park the week before, and will also be kicking off their third workshop with the South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre next week.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, the team works to build a 12-foot flat-bottom skiff, from start to finish, in just one week. The three-seat boat can hold between two to three youth.
David Vine, founder and principle boat builder of Stem2Stern, first started the project five years ago, when he was teaching at Strathroy District Collegiate Institute, later running it every year during the summer.
"The funniest reaction is when they show up on day one, and they're unloading my trailer and they're looking at all the pieces coming out, and I show them the photo album of what their target is by the end of the day on Friday. They say, 'Wait, this is a full-sized boat?' 'I'm getting in this boat?'" Vine said.

During the past couple of days, Gazan factions launched rocket attacks towards Israel in response to the latter’s crackdown on Palestinians in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
More than 80 Palestinians have been killed as Israel responded with heavy airstrikes. Hundreds others were injured in each of Gaza and Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, in addition to ongoing acts of violence committed by both Israeli settlers and forces against the Palestinians in East Jerusalem, Israel plans to evict several Palestinians families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem.
Below are a number of basic facts about the crisis that has taken the attention of the whole world.
How did Israeli crackdown on Palestinian protesters in East Jerusalem begin?
Israel wants to evict almost 40 Palestinians families from their homes in East Jerusalem.
Since early April, the Palestinians have been protesting against Israel’s willingness to capture their houses that both their predecessors and themselves have been living in for long decades.
The Palestinians also resorted to contentious politics due to the fact that they faced violence: Israeli security forces and settlers regularly attack them. Many Knesset members, extreme-right wing groups and settlers have adopted an aggressive, anti-Palestinian discourse.
Slogans such as “Go Back to Jordan '' or “Death to Arabs” have been continuously heard by the people of Sheikh Jarrah during the past month.
During Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, Israel took some provocative measures that catalysed the growth of Palestinan anger.
Although removing it a few weeks later, Israel put barriers outside Damascus Gate to prevent Palestinians from entering Jerusalem’s Old City. As a tradition, thousands of Palestinians normally gather in this area after night-time prayers.
Worshippers were also prevented from entering Al-Aqsa mosque compound, a holy site for Muslims.

One of the greatest honours which can be bestowed upon any human being is the Nobel Prize. It is named after Alfred Nobel, a Swedish physicist who was particularly noted for his work on explosives. Nobel was born in 1833, and had a long and successful career, so that, when he died, on 10 December 1896, he left a large sum of money. This was to be put into a trust to establish an annual prize to t...

Mercedes Benz is the best selling luxury car so far followed by BMW. You're asking this question based on some super luxury cars like Rolls Royce, Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari or Maserati. Of course those cars are far more luxurious than Mercedes Benz, but they're sold in very limited number.
On the other hand, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai have developed their own luxury brands competing against Mercedes Benz and BMW, but they're also not able to beat Mercedes Benz so far, as they are new and have been labeled as middle class brands.
Because of all these, Mercedes Benz remains the King of Luxury cars.

One of the new trends in business that I am truly excited about is the consumer-to-manufacturing
business models: C2M. This is coming out of China. Hence I make a video about it.
If we look at traditional business models, typically M2C: Manufacturing-to-consumers
with the brand in between. What a brand did, still today, is they created these new products,
these new designs, think about BMW, Apple, think about Gucci. Think about any brand you
can think of...they sourced these products in factories - more and more in China - they
put it in the store and the consumer bought it. Typical traditional way of doing business.
But later on, what you saw in the past decade is that this became much more customer-centric.
This was more about the consumer and the customer, and try to understand what they wanted, what
the trends were - alive in social media. A company that was very successful with this
was Zara from Inditex. They created these designs based on all the designs available
in the world and what customers loved. But then they still went into the same sourcing
model - usually in China - and then put it in the store. They put the customer first.
But besides that, there is not a lot of change. Other companies like H&M, Uniqlo,...they all
went into that same direction. Then later on, maybe 5 years ago, you saw more direct-to-consumer
model. It's the same model as the one that is customer centric; but the only difference
there is no physical retail. It's online sold direct to the consumer. You see a lot of companies
like Nova Fashion; but even Amazon, you could call that with their private labels doing
that by allowing brands or people to make their own brands with this model. The direct-to-consumer
was very popular - still is today - specifically in fashion. But now I believe there is a new
model coming up, which is called consumer-to-manufacturing. This is coming out of China. The big difference
is that they are putting the consumer and designers on the same level. That is now possible
with social media; if you think about Instagram, you think about YouTube, you think about TikTok.
You think about all these platforms where people can express themselves. They are not
at a different level anymore. It's not these designers from Gucci or Chanel that are deciding
what the market wants. it's also not the consumer, like with Zara, that is telling through market
research what the trends are. No. Now, they are telling it online every single day. The
cool thing about C2M - this new idea - is that this is combined with the platforms and
the factories. What it means, is that in China, more and more of the e-commerce players are
connecting the consumer and the designers directly with the factories. So that they
can produce these new trends instantly. And then they are monitoring what the market wants
in order to do it faster, better, cheaper,... I am going to explain a little bit about this

Glencore Plc said it could dramatically increase returns to shareholders going forward as the company cashes in on high prices for the commodities it mines and trades.
Glencore announced $1.18 billion in dividends and share repurchases Thursday after surging metals prices helped drive first-half earnings to a record. But while the buyback may be a welcome surprise for investors, Glencore’s payouts remain well below mining rivals like Rio Tinto Group and Anglo American Plc, which last week announced a combined $13.2 billion in shareholder returns, also after record profits.
Glencore’s now in a position to pay out a higher percentage of its earnings after reducing borrowings, Chief Financial Officer Steve Kalmin told reporters. The company cut net debt by 33% from a year earlier to the bottom of its long-term range. The current dividend policy is to pay $1 billion from its trading unit, plus 25% of free cash flows from the sprawling mining business.
“Given where the balance sheet is, we can move to much higher payout ratios potentially going forward,” Kalmin said. “We wouldn’t leverage the business further to pay distributions, but we’re happy to move to 100% pay out ratios.”
Glencore and its rivals have benefited this year from surging prices for commodities from copper to coal, as governments around the world unleash trillions of dollars in stimulus packages to help the global economy emerge from the pandemic, boosting demand for raw materials. At current prices, the company would generate $21.8 billion in profit this year, with a potential free cash flow of $11.5 billion, Glencore said.
“The subsequent economic recovery has seen prices of most of our commodities surging to multi-year highs amid accelerating demand and lingering supply constraints,” said Chief Executive Officer Gary Nagle, who succeeded long-time boss Ivan Glasenberg at the end of June. “Fiscal and monetary stimulus, successful

There was a time in the not-so-distant past when the American workplace operated under an implicit agreement: Employees who worked hard at their jobs and stayed loyal to a company were rewarded with job security, health benefits, and other perks. This bargain is an example of what’s known as the norm of reciprocity — repaying one kindness with another —and reciprocity is a universal component of the moral code that governs human behavior. Yet in today’s work world, reciprocity operates with less force.
Indeed, says Stanford Graduate School of Business professor Jeffrey Pfeffer, “Implicit contracts are violated in the corporate world on a daily basis. Workplaces not only fail to acknowledge past employee loyalty and contributions, but they also renege on what has been implicitly or explicitly promised, such as pensions and retiree health care.”

Mr Liu, however, advised resisting the temptation of diplomatic overextension and unnecessary military engagements during a crisis. He attributed the global dominance of the United States following the Second World War to its preceding decades of isolationism.
For all its recent unshakable rule, China's history over the past century has been one of economic crises that brought the country to the political brink. During the Great Depression, an impoverished Japan invaded resource-rich Manchuria, sparking two decades of bloodshed and economic devastation in China.
The Chinese Communist Party faced its most severe political crisis in 1989, when tens of thousands of students and workers flooded Beijing's Tiananmen Square. While largely remembered as a pro-democracy movement, Mr von Glahn, the economic historian, says the demonstrations were more about economic grievances than anything else.
Deng Xiaoping, China's paramount leader at the time, gave the fateful order to stamp out the protests with deadly force, but acceded to public demands for faster economic reforms. This has been the deal that Beijing has offered ever since: economic growth in exchange for political quiescence.
Mr Liu illustrated his 2013 report with a series of charts that showed how the global power structure shifted following economic crises. The first showed the United States dominating the global economy after the Great Depression. The second showed emerging economies gaining pace after the 2008 crash.

My family was very supportive. My peers definitely were not. They looked down on the trade. They felt like because I didn't go to college, I wasn't gonna mount to anything. People expect us to come in like a bull in a China closet and just kinda wreck everything. The plumbing image has changed quite a bit since I first started. We try our hardest to take care of people's houses. My name is Richard Mendadas. I'm 30 years old. I'm a journeyman plumber. I live in San Antonio, Texas and I expect to make 105 to 125 thousand this year. I grew up in New Braunfels, Texas. It was me, my mom, and my brother, my sister. We're pretty tight-knit family. We used to play board games all the time and my grandparents are the ones who really kinda instilled the hard work into me. When I was in high school, this was at Churchill High School, it was very frowned on to do trades. So, they were really down playing the trades and pushing college on everybody. There was teachers that was, you know, in our assemblies. Everything was geared towards going to school and if you didn't, well, good luck. I was very disappointed 'cuz I really, really wanted to get my associates degree and I think I was maybe three credits away from it. The textbook that got in my way was a psychology book. It was about $500 and I couldn't master up the money to get it so that's the reason why I dropped out of college. I was making I think it was $8.50 an hour then I got a raise to ten after about a year um second year was 1750 and from there after the pay cut went down I think it dropped me to $12 the owner got in trouble for some tax evasion and had to had to cut our pay significantly enough where I was at risk of losing my apartment my girlfriend at the time who's now my wife who just found out she was pregnant so I really needed to push to get something done I didn't wanna not have a stable future I was 20 years old when I started plumbing. I reached out to my mom for some help and she directed me towards my father who I hadn't seen in a long time.
