"Run to Freedom" is a trilogy set on an 18th century Jamaican plantation about an enslaved family’s quest for freedom. She was concerned that they were going to grow up in a society where they had to think of their ethnic make-up as being a defining and sometimes limiting factor in their lives.

In Jamaica, she grew up without needing to identify herself by race but being very proud of her nationality. She wanted to show her children pictures of her own national heroes, people who, though enslaved, were not servile...
