🥹“I started crying on air…We were living in a city that was completely militarized at the time and we had just gone through the January 6th insurrection” on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. “We had to go through checkpoints to go into our office, which you would think was a safe place…it did not resemble D.C. my home and I have a small child.” 

🎥“In the 15 years that I was on TV no job I ever held was held by anyone before me.”

📽After a few years in Washington and after covering the Trump presidency, which was a very complicated and challenging time, I felt a level of exhaustion that I never felt before to disengage and to disengage completely.”

🎤Rafael has worked in Buenos Aires as a finance and economics reporter, covering three presidential campaigns in the United States and the 2018 presidential campaign in Mexico.

📝His work has been featured in more than 20 countries across the world. He is the co-author of “Los Legalizadores,” a book about the legalization of cannabis in the United States, published by Editorial Planeta, the largest Spanish publisher.

👩🏻Pilar Pedraza has been in the news industry for two decades playing almost every single role there is in a broadcast newsroom. She’s been a production assistant, a newsroom manager, photographer, anchor and she’s currently an anchor and a senior political reporter at KAKE TV in Wichita, Kansas.

📹When I asked Scott Monaghan, former news photographer, what his last straw was when he decided to quit news, he said: “Newtown was a big trigger, I still tear up over that, it still resonates with me… I’m expending all this energy, for me it’s like a deflated balloon. We roll in as journalists with this huge: how are you doing? We gotta get the interview with the mom, we gotta get the interview with the dad and three days later everybody is gone and those people have just had the worst thing…the media has come in and hammered them and we leave. It sounds weird to me. It became in my mind like this weird game and I didn't want to play it anymore.”

🥇Scott Monaghan is a Peabody Award winning photographer and a two-time Emmy award winner with more than 30 years of experience in videography, lighting and editing. He worked for Univision network for more than 20 years as a videographer and director of photography for the news magazine ‘Aqui y Ahora’ among other news shows in the National Television Network. 

🥹He decided to quit news in 2018 after covering major national and international stories like the Sandy Hook School Shooting in 2012, the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016 and natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey in Texas in 2017.

👩🏻Vicky Nguyen, was in the news industry for a decade working as a crime reporter, investigative reporter, enterprise storyteller, field producer and more. She did it all, a skill us journalists know well. In march 2022 she decided to quit the news industry, like many of us have chosen to do in the last two years. 

📺During her time at one of the news stations, as she was getting ready to re-negotiate her contract, she had a conversation with a colleague –whom she’s friends with– and they realized this person was earning $27,000 more doing the same job as her and taking on less responsibilities than she was. For example, this person was not doing live shots and Vicky was.

📹Vicky was the vice president of the LA chapter of AAJA (Asian American Journalist Association), Before leaving news, Vicky earned the Best Television News Reporting award issued by Radio & Television News Association of Southern California, and she earned an Emmy award for the Best Evening Newscast in 2015. 

🗣She is now a communications manager at the Orange county department of education.
