Corina Hierro is a former bilingual emmy-award winning TV reporter, who worked for almost five years at Telemundo, Denver (KDEN-TV) as a multimedia journalist and production assistant. She quit the news industry in December 2019 and she now helps connect companies with the Latino workforce through a startup called ‘Chamba’. She’s been awarded on multiple occasions with the Colorado Broadcast Association awards.   Corina, a former colleague of Miguel Bedoy —whose interview we published on Tuesday, October 12th– corroborates some of the allegations Bedoy is alleging occurred within KDEN-TV while they were employed under the NBCUniversal affiliate.

Corina says she would call in sick when she had her period because of severe pain. When Corina called in sick one time, she alleges her former News Director asked her why, grabbed a calendar and then asked Corina to give her the dates of her time of the month.

Please remember this is a safe space for journalists to speak their truth. Let’s be mindful of how difficult it was for Corina to voice publicly some of the incidents she endured during her time in KDEN-TV.

We have not heard back from NBCUniversal after our request for comment on Miguel Bedoy’s lawsuit. Corina is not part of the lawsuit.

He has covered social justice, public safety, politics and environmental sustainability. He was Recognized as the best news anchor by the Colorado Broadcasters Association.

🧔🏻‍♂️👩🏻Miguel, along with a former colleague, Eragdi Adriana Macías, are suing NBCUniversal Media, LLC and it’s affiliate Telemundo of Denver LLC (KDEN-TV).

📺In this interview, Miguel alleges the following:

🚫Incidents of sexual harassment by his former News Director (ND) where she told him: “I want to see a macho man not a sissy” on the news desk. This occurred after she invited him out and realized Miguel had a male partner.

🗄He states his ND once told him: “Before somebody wants me out of here, I will make them to be out.”

🚔 “She asked me to violate security measures in place while I was at the jail covering el Chapo.” This led to police pointing guns at him to remove him from the restricted area.

🎥 The ND ``asked me to lie in my story saying el Chapo was already in [the Colorado] jail when he wasn’t. I’m not proud of this, and I had to do it if I didn’t want to lose my job.”

🇲🇽 ND “called the Mexican audience ‘juanitas.’” This term is used in a denigrating manner to refer to the lower income Mexican communities and Mexicans in general. Mexicans are KDEN-TV’s main audience.

🎙”Nobody wants to give me a job because I’m suing NBCUniversal and Telemundo. The media doesn’t want that, they don’t want us to talk.”

📜”Plaintiffs’ employment came to an end with Telemundo after they made

complaints regarding a hostile work environment and various discriminatory actions by their supervisor, News Director, Ms. Grisella Sierra,” according to the lawsuit.

📃The lawsuit adds: ”Throughout their employment, Plaintiffs were subjected to

discrimination and a hostile work environment from Telemundo/NBC executives, Ms. Olga Holschbach, VP of juman resources and Ms. Tatiana Arguello, General Manager.”

💵”They [NBCUniversal] offered me $4,900 to not sue them. I didn’t accept. I don’t want $4,900 to be quiet. All #journalists need to talk. They need to stop being quiet and #scared.”

📝We reached out to NBCUniversal for comment on Sunday, October 10th. We have not heard back, yet.

We have to be advocates for higher pay,” says Hannah Joy Gebresilassie, a journalist, community advocate and motivational speaker based out of Atlanta who adds that we need to ask “for more benefits and be able to negotiate at the table and not just accept what they give us right off the jump.”

During his time as an education investigative reporter in South Bend, Indiana, Tolly Taylor, an award-winning journalist, managed to shed light on a local story that points to a nationwide issue. Kids attending Benton Harbor Public Schools district in Michigan and “30 minutes down the road, [in the same county] kids get almost three times the funding per student.” Tolly, who is now an investigative reporter in Providence, Rhode Island for WPRI, adds that “students from the wealthiest areas get more money. That's not how it should be.” Tolly says one of the “darkest times” for him in the industry was trying to find a job and he also believes news outlets can do better when it comes to hiring people of color in higher level jobs. After covering first hand the deepening border crisis between Colombia and Venezuela, Genis Gabriela Alvarado, a National Emmy Award-nominated bilingual storyteller, says “the impact and the effect was so challenging that it really blocked me...and I was not registering things.” Genis, also known as Gabby, decided to quit the news industry in 2019 to tend to her health, among other reasons. She worked for NBC Universal Media under Telemundo Networks’ umbrella in south Florida for four years. Prior to that, she worked at iHeart Radio for almost two years. In one of his latest stories, José Guarnizo, chronicler and director of Vorágine, investigated the Colombian military after the death of a FARC former combatant, Dimar Torres. His story led to the confession of a Colombian army general who later acknowledged that soldiers had murdered Torres. Vorágine is a non-profit organization based in Colombia that focuses on investigative reporting to bring awareness to diverse violations of human rights. The organization believes in independent journalism that responds to no political or economic interests to guarantee transparent and truthful journalism. Model and Health Coach, Deborah Mace, speaks about her inspiring healing journey

Media Healers: Melissa Fajardo is an award winning producer at The New Yorker. She’s an Edward R. Murrow award recipient. She worked at ‘Now This’ and later moved on to a documentary style show on Netflix. Melissa quit the news industry in October 2020 to tend to her health after her cousin flew to New York and witnessed one of her panic attacks. On that trip, her cousin encouraged Melissa to quit and take a few months off to recover. She did, and shortly after, Melissa landed a new job as a producer in New York Magazine. We speak to Melissa about her healing journey, how she dealt with feelings of shame after quitting and how she’s handling stress now that she’s back in the news industry. "The amount of anxiety...and nonstop working hours...it wasn't sustainable…You feel like your world starts crashing and like no one understands what you’re going through.” This interview is in English.
