If you thought “I’m going to steal the Declaration of Independence” was epic, you HAVE NOT SEEN “I’m going to kidnap the president of the United States”. National Treasure 2 is the most delightful anomaly in all of film. It’s crazier, bigger, and more ridiculous than its predecessor, but it somehow manages to make that work entirely to its advantage. Indeed, this is not only an improvement on the original, but it’s actually a great movie by most standards. And what’s even better is listening to two sleep deprived lunatics rant on and on about this glorious display of Nic Cage: Uncaged. I had to BUY, physically BUY, Super Mario Bros on DVD for this review. If that doesn’t say the lengths at which I will go for this podcast, I don’t know what does. This film is an absolute anomaly. How it got made, how it exists in this universe, all of it escapes me. It’s a movie I truly didn’t even know existed until it was kindly recommended to me on Twitter, and WOW I’m so glad it was. Not only is Super Mario Bros a hidden gem from the bowels of ‘93, but it’s also an iconic film that deserves to be regarded as an all time cult classic. The world building and logic at work in this is nothing short of inspiring. Not in the sense that it’s ‘good’ necessarily...but certainly in the sense that it’s shockingly entertaining. This film belongs on streaming services. We need everyone to know that Super Mario Bros exists and you can actually see Dennis Hopper with a lizard tongue. Sharknado. Is a movie...that...exists? I honestly never had an interest in seeing Sharknado at any point in my life. I was so committed to avoiding it at all costs that if I was ever asked, I usually just said I saw it to avoid someone wanting desperately to show me a movie about a bunch of sharks in a tornado. We all have guilty pleasures, and this most certainly wasn’t mine. So what better way to give back on this year anniversary of Bad Movies Podcast than to subject myself to the corporal punishment of watching Sharknado and reviewing it enitrely solo. Now on the back half of 50, we’re just excited to still be here! Cue George of the Jungle. A movie I had blocked out from my early childhood after rendering it as ‘Tarzan but with no fun songs’. Fortunately, my guest this week had a proper affinity for this Disney classic(?) so there was plenty to discuss. How outrageously detached from reality is too outrageously detached from reality? George of the Jungle seeks to answer that question. It also seeks to answer whether or not fart jokes are funny and whether or not Brendan Fraser, The 90’s legend, is great (he is). We celebrate 50 EPISODES in the only way we possibly could by bringing in The Citizen Kane of ‘Bad Movies’, The Room! Of course it was the #1 requested review. Of course, I had always planned for it to be the big #50. But I had no idea it would be quite as much fun as it was. The entire Sound Pollination crew has gathered for this epic event and created easily one of my personal favorite episodes of all time. We laughed. We cried. We talked about spoons. In concept alone, this is probably the craziest film that will ever grace this podcast unless we end up doing Zombeavers down the line or something. Tusk is a film that’s likely off putting for a large majority of people who come across it. It’s the type of movie that makes you say, “oh but they won’t go that far will they?” And then subsequently go, “oh wow they went that far”. In this episode, we go full walrus dissecting every little thing we can out of this Kevin Smith horror comedy. And the conclusion we’ve drawn may shock people, but this movie is kind of amazing. Back to back Twilight episodes? It just felt right considering this is the FINALE. I can say I officially have my Twihard card after this one. We’ve come a long way from the cringey opening beats of the first film, and might I just say I found myself investing in ways that were genuinely surprising. Not only is this an end of an era, but I’m also quite sad to see it come to an end. My copilot for the entire Twilight series since the beginning has been a bundle of joy, and I cannot wait to get her back in the studio for whatever the next special thing is. And of course my boy who joined us in the final hour for these reviews will always be a bestie of mine. If you can’t tell, I’m feeling quite nostalgic. Am I really becoming a Twilight fan? When I’m the holy f**k did this happen? I mean seriously, the whole thing started as a ridiculous BMP fantasy, something I thought would be entertaining for the viewership. But lo and behold, as I always tend to secretly hope, I genuinely began to enjoy the experience. Sure Breaking Dawn Part 1 has flaws, every film does. But shockingly this is better than most things that stumble upon this podcast. Will I go out into the streets chanting, “Jacob forever”? No. But the longer this goes on, the more I see the appeal. Having just finished the series Avatar: The Last Airbender, I decided to reward myself with the live action adaptation, The Last Airbender. And wow. What a time it was. I almost feel guilty speaking so passionately considering I am only a new fan to the series, but this was quite a lot to take. M Night Shyamalan is an absolute marvel, so whatever happened that made this movie tank so hard is difficult to process. But we certainly do the best we can to try and break down exactly what happened here to make this one of the worst adaptations of all time. Frustrating is an unfortunate understatement for this film. But on the plus side, the series is still a wonderful pinnacle of television, so you’ll always have something to cleanse your pallet. Featuring Special Guest Star Mickey Stein Roberts!
