After a whirlwind tour of all the golf courses in Bermuda, and endless repeats of The Girl From Ipanema, we went back to NY and "real life." We finally settled in Hoboken, NJ, home of Frank Sinatra and up-and-coming addendum to NYC. It was a good place to start.

My daughter turns 33 today! In celebration of which I hope you will forgive a bit of gushing. She has had a rough time of this day for the last few years, and I hope that this angel number birthday frees her from that bad spell. Soar, my love!

I'm re-reading a wonderful book about writing by Anne Lamott entitled Bird by Bird. It's about deconstructing the process and seeing the steps contained therein. It made me reflect on the building blocks that have gone into constructing the life I have today.

I also had a sleepover with my college roommate, Ann. Such fun! Grownups should have sleepovers more often. We rarely have extended time to really get below the superficial stories and into the meat of our why's and how's. I recommend you try a sleepover with a friend.

In Tanzania we explored the Ngorongoro Crater and the incredible Eden preserved therein. Thousands of flamingoes flew overhead and a small pod of the last remaining rhinos munched under the watchful eye of protective rangers. I hope their descendants still thrive there. 

Being in Africa certainly threw into stark relief the devastation that the human species has had on this planet. What if...? Impossible now to think of the alternative, but I felt that I glimpsed it there in Tanzania.

After seeing all the beautiful wild animals roaming the plains what is the logical conclusion to arrive at? Why, to eat them, of course.  NOT!  That's what our guides thought, however, so in the middle of our trip they took us to The Carnivore Restaurant. It was upsetting, but we made the best of it.

My mom wanted to take me for one last trip before I was a married lady, so we went on an incredible safari in Kenya and Tanzania, just the two of us. We were forever changed by seeing the majestic beasts in their natural habitats, and it was an incredible opportunity that I have never forgotten. This is part one of a 3-episode tale of that epic adventure.
