After all those tales of faraway lands, I'm taking a brief pause to consider the path. In those moments of transition it's important to look back and see where we've been so that we can move forward. I think none of us take enough time to do that.

Call me crazy... seriously, you have my permission... but after leaving China I went on a month-long backpacking trip across Europe with my boyfriend. We went to many places I had never been to and a few that I wanted to show him that I knew. We had a glorious time, as only two crazy kids in their 20s can have on a shoestring. I highly recommend it, kids!

By the time we were halfway through this incredible trip we were hitting overload. So many temples and emperors, many of which I'm sure I'm pronouncing totally wrong! Please forgive me.

We traveled down the Yangtzee by boat and across the interior by train and saw so many small towns which are probably bustling metropolises now. We exchanged songs and fun with many of the locals and absolutely loved every minute. So sad to leave.

From spectacular landscapes with jutting mountains rising straight out of the river to dragon boat rides down the canal to towns where people came thronging out to the dock to welcome us, central China was magical. We were able to get a glimpse into commune life and were taught much about how handicrafts were made via methods that were handed down over hundreds of years.

After Hong Kong we hopped over to mainland China and our first stop was Kunming. We quickly realized that the Chinese viewed us as true aliens, having never seen anyone that looked like us. It was bizarre and amazing, and we marveled at all of the things that we took for granted that were totally new to them... like red hair!

The next few episodes will be about my trip to China in the summer of 1983. It was like nothing I had ever experienced before, and I believe it was a unique opportunity to see China during a historically unprecedented transition. After Mao died in 1979, the country opened up to Western visitors in a broad way and it was a chance to almost walk through the past because there were few so-called modern conveniences and yet so much national excitement for the country to burst into a new era and catch up to its fellow super powers. Little did we know where that fervor would lead them...

In the spring of senior year tensions were high. School was intense, worries about the future and a disappointing sex life didn't help. Then I found myself pregnant and completely uneducated and unprepared for how to deal with that.

Nonetheless I finally made it to graduation, hopefully wiser... definitely relieved.

As I made the transition from free spirit to full-time girlfriend, I had weekly identity crises. I didn't recognize myself in this jealous, obsessive woman, and didn't know enough about communication to work my way into peace. It was a prickly growing time, but at least it was punctuated by our Cook of the Week club, an excursion into culinary delights. Most of the time.
