In the summer of '82 I was lucky enough to be accepted into a summer photography class in Paris with the Parsons School of Design. I learned so much about the craft of photography and the city of Paris, and I made one important life-long friend.

Since the drinking age was 20 when I was 20, my 21st birthday didn't have to be a big deal, but it turned out to be as far from a big deal as it could get. I spent the evening with a Lite beer and a bunch of weird anonymous drunks at a Commonwealth Avenue drinking hole called The Dugout.

Amidst other intense developments there were also insane distractions and one of these was Bette Midler. We adored her and wanted, more than anything, to sing backup for her. Did it happen? Listen and see.

Junior year heralded a new phase for me in that I started developing relationships with men in new ways. Before that it had been all playful and never serious, but somewhere in the fall of 81 that started to change.

More curious relationships developed during my junior year as new Birdmen moved into our dorm. We created a contest, whose rules were obscure to everyone, wherein we chose a "Birdman of the month" and featured his portrait over the face of a famous hunk. That was one way we spiced up life in room 304.

During my junior year, The Offkey Three enjoyed quite a run of excellent gigs - Boston and NYC and even a short radio spot. Imagine where I might have been if we'd gone pro. Ah well... another road not taken...

I was an avid letter writer in my youth. I even transcribed letters I had written to friends into my journals so I could keep them. Here is one that I wrote home to a friend who was still in high school. I even sprang for the 20¢ stamp!

In the summer after my sophomore year I had the house to myself. When a person is 20 years old I'm sure you know where that leads! July 4th at the Jersey shore and a wonderful NYC internship rounded out a very fun summer.

By the spring of sophomore year I was really settling in to this crazy new community I had happened upon. The Birdmen were a constant source of fun and joy, and a few stand out in particular. Our friend Chip satirized all dorm denizens in a once-in-a-while rag he wrote called Gathers No Moss (the name a tribute to the Rolling Stone Magazine that he loved so much). In sophomore year Ann and I moved into a wild and crazy double brownstone dorm on Bay State Road wild a bunch of guys who called themselves the Birdmen. They were a mystery to us for a few weeks until a rager of a party and a harrowing initiation earned us some respect.
