  • Episode 35: Is Stretching Good For You?

(1:45) We are treating problems not symptoms, we are the David Vs. Goliath, going up against the corporate medical system

(2:22) We first want to find out the problem, not the symptom

(2:50) Today we are going to be talking about stretching and whether or not it’s a good thing (It depends)

(3:40) Why Jake thinks stretching is not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing and that it is a dependent on the situation

(4:07) We want to have an equal amount of strength and flexibility

(5:06) When we have in imbalance of strength and flexibility is when injuries occur

(5:37) If we are hypermobile we want to have equal strength to support the joints

(6:18) Hypermobile is 8-10 on the flexibility scale with 10 being the highest amount of flexibility

(6:55) It is extremely challenging to be 8-10 in flexibility and strength but it is possible

(7:00) Jake gives a perfect example

(9:00) Jake would give Jenni equal strength and equal flexibility, he would give her a 9 in each category

(9:55) A “yogi” is the term Jake refers to people that think yoga is the end all be all

(10:12) Yoga is good though but must be balanced. Every couple of months someone will come into the office (usually a female) that does yoga a ton and is dealing with back pain but doesn’t understand why

(12:06) When your body is in perfect strength all around, you should never need to stretch

(12:41) Stretching is good when you are tight, but why are you tight to begin with? Usually you get tight when something else is weak

(13:10) Back to the example of the “yogi” with back pain

(13:25) Weak glutes is the number one reason for back pain

(15:00) What do we need to focus on to get equal strength and flexibility?

(15:53) You should have control of all the degrees of motion of your joint

(16:36) Difference between active and passive stretching

(17:10) Jake gives an example using the knee

(18:37) This all comes down to injury prevention. Think about a chain on a bike, if a chain is super loose, there is more flexibility than strength, there is excessive motion in that chain which is fine if you are riding real slow. But if you start going down a hill, the chain comes off because there was too much flexibility for the speed that was being generated. The same thing is true with the human body

(21:03) Hypermobility in comparison to strength on the number scale is not a problem, until it is

(22:57) How do you know if they do not have enough flexibility versus strength? Jennis shares how she is aware of it while she is working out

(26:03) The number one sign you need to strengthen is feeling tightness after being in position for a prolonged period of time

(23:28) Sitting is the new smoking

(24:08) After sitting for a prolonged time, people will stand up with back pain but it due to the hip flexors being tight

(24:20) The back feels tight but it's due to the hip flexors. One of the reasons the hip flexors are so tight is because you didn’t squeeze your glutes hard enough to take the tension away from the hip flexors

(25:15) Jake provides a real life example

(25:50) Instead of stretching, you should squeeze the glutes

(26:30) We aren’t saying stretching is bad and next week we will provide good stretches!

  • Episode 34: Arthritis - Is Your Knee Bone on Bone? You Most Likely Don't Need Surgery!

(1:00) We are starting to record videos

(2:29) We are going to be talking Osteoarthritis, more explicitly bone on bone, specifically in the knee

(2:55) Every week we get at least 1 call saying their knee is bone on bone & their doctor is recommending knee replacement surgery

(3:56) We are receiving a ton of calls about knee pain

(4:11) Jake’s philosophy on bone on bone… Does it matter? X-Rays & MRIs don’t paint the full picture

(5:08) Jake gives an example of his philosophy

(7:11) Just because it is bone on bone doesn’t that is what is causing the pain response

(7:28) What is cartilage and its importance?

(9:07) What causes cartilage to break down?

(9:35) Difference between someone who played football their whole life and do have cartilage left compared to someone who doesn’t

(10:50) 60% of people over the age of 40 show in the MRI that show something wrong with a disc in their back

(11:52) Cartilage break down is from a lack of muscle deficiency

(12:40) By using your muscles ineffectively, it puts more stress on the joints. The whole purpose of muscles in your body is to alleviate stress on your joints

    (13:30) Jake finishes his example

(14:34) When you land your foot on the ground, you want to have a straighter knee

(15:23) What muscles need to be activated to keep the knee straight?

(15:46) The number one cause Jake see’s for knee pain is the muscles on the front of the leg are stronger than the muscles on the back of the leg

(16:30) The glutes are the muscles that need to be firing to avoid that knee pain

(17:12) The first thing we do with patients with knee pain is get the leg straight, without pain. Next we get the glutes firing, the glutes actively keep it straight

(17:39) Best thing to do for knee pain is get your knee straight and the glutes firing

(18:01) Jake has only had one patient in his career that was able to get a straight knee and still need surgery

    (18:31) Hyper-mobility

(19:00) If you can’t get it straight, you’re going to need surgery

(19:40) Cortisone & what it does

(20:40) Pain is there for a reason, Jake hates injections

(22:12) We used the knee for that example but the same applies for the hip, back and somewhat the shoulder

(22:48) Bone on bone is common and just because your X-Ray shows that, doesn’t mean you need surgery

(23:20) Jake continues his example from earlier

(24:42) “Sally” comes to Jake with her left knee bone on bone this is because the muscles surrounding the knee are inflamed, so get the glutes firing to help alleviate the stress around the knee and rid of the the inflammation, which was causing the pain*

(25:30) If it’s bone on bone the pain is because the soft tissue surrounding the knee not necessarily the bone on bone

(26:32) Anything Jake can do to help you avoid the scalpel he will do it as long as it improves the quality of life

(1:40) It’s March Madness, where hard work out work talent that doesn’t work hard

(2:44) Jenni is light years ahead of Jake one year into her business

(4:32) March is national nutrition month

    (6:56) Complex and simple Carbohydrates

(7:43) The difference between complex and simple carbohydrates

(8:53) Carbohydrates and sugar are used synonymously

(9:01) We have carbs that are better for us because they provide fiber

(9:20) Net carbohydrates - How fiber interacts with carbs

(10:07) Carbohydrates are broken down into sugar

(11:15) Healthiest and worst fruits to eat

(12:20) Why do we need fiber?

(12:45) Benefits of lowering our cholesterol

(13:05) You can lower your cholesterol by dietary changes

(13:47) We are David Vs. Goliath going up against the corporate medical system. We’re focused on treating the problems compared to the symptoms

(14:03) Bad cholesterol is typically related to saturated fats compared to good cholesterol is going to be related to cardiovascular exercise and good fats

(15:17) Fiber will help with the circulating bad cholesterol

(15:55) The more fiber you have, the less hungry you are

(16:37) You should have fiber apart of every meal

(17:27) Fiber through complex carbs are really important for your cholesterol and heart

(17:50) Why does all this matter?

(18:40) Number one cause of death is heart disease

(19:51) Quality of life decreases over time when we deal with the side effects of heart disease

(20:12) Adding life to years, not years to life

(21:13) There is no downside to any of this!

    (21:53) Sugar alcohols

(22:08) Jake eats too many protein bars during his hunting trips!

(23:22) Heart health is important for your quality of life because most people aren’t living their life to the fullest

  • Episode 32: All Pain is a Result of Weakness - Lessons Learned From Arnold Schwarzenegger!

(2:10) Jake’s Aunt meets Arnold Schwartzanagger
(2:55) 50 squats a day keeps Jake Berman away
(3:10) Why Jake has this saying
(3:30) Non-Traumatic pain is secondary weakness
(5:29) Jake gets diagnosed with a herniated disk
(6:15) “This is crazy” - Jake dealing w/ chronic back pain at 30, he couldn't drive for more than two hours w/o pain.
(7:48) Jake is playing the best round of golf in his life, steps up to the tee box on hole 8 and as soon as he swung, he felt like someone shot him in the back. It literally buckled. The next morning he literally could not get out of bed
(8:19) Jake rolled out of bed and it took him 2 hours to get off the ground!
(9:16) It took him another two hours to begin to walk, this gave him a lot of sympathy
(10:10) Made a vow that he was going to go into work on Monday and have his staff assess him and do an objective screen on him & tell him what his weaknesses are
(10:37) The staff assessed Jake and found his left glute was weak and not firing at all!
(12:15) Jake now enjoys leg day more than any other day because all this is in the back of his mind off
(13:17) Arnold Schwartzanagger key number 5 is “Work Your Butt Off”, there is someone always trying to be better than you
(14:53) The reason Jake hated leg day was because it was his WEAKNESS!
(16:08) It was at least 6 months for Jake to have the confidence to do a weighted squat, didn’t squat more than 135 lbs but focused on perfecting form and increasing reps
(16:40) 18 months after the injury, Jake could go into the gym and lift heavier weights with no flare ups
(17:26) In the 4 years since, Jake has not had an episode with his back
(18:12) The reason I wanted to talk about all this is because I was in the gym today doing deadlifts and today is the most he has deadlifted in the last 10 years with no back pain!(18:55) The older you get the weaker you get is what the general population accepts, but it doesn’t have to be this way, regardless of age
(19:24) All secondary pain is related to weakness, it doesn’t matter how old you are and you have a position of relief. By position of relief Jake is referring to, is there a position you can get in where you are not in pain
(20:21) If you can’t find a position of relief, that is a big problem. If you can find a position of relief you can fix your pain through PERFECT hard work.
(21:02) That's where Berman PT comes in. Jake couldn’t do it himself, he had to have his staff say that he wasn’t in perfect alignment
(21:53) Every single athlete has coaching, no matter the sport.
(22:21) They need them there because we are talking about the difference of splitting hairs here and that’s what causes flare ups down the road.
(22:38) Real life examples of things Jake has taken for granted
(24:53) Every week Jake hears a story from skeptic that they can’t believe they are pain free
(25:40) Jimmy’s story, his back pain was so bad, he literally couldn’t do anything. He couldn’t reach over to touch his knee caps and this is a very active guy
(26:12) We worked with him for a year and he could start moving again, fast forward a year and a half later he was back to doing everything he wanted to do
(26:56) One more example; Laurie, her story is similar to Jimmy’s. I told her we were going to fix her up, fast forward a couple years, she's back to doing everything she was able to do and doesn’t have back pain anymore. She doesn’t feel like her life is dictated by her back pain anymore.
(26:06) If you do NOT have traumatic pain, it is fixable, IF you have a position of relief. It will NOT be a quick fix. It will take work, especially if you put in the PERFECT work.
(28:52) 50 squats a day keeps Jake Berman away, and I will even count getting out of your chair. Just do it slower and use your muscles. A year from today you will be stronger than you are today!

  • Episode 30: Insulin Resistance and Diabetes & Why YOU Should All Care!

(1:20) Go back and listen to the previous two podcasts

(2:29) We are going over Insulin Resistance and Diabetes today

(2:47) You can identify insulin resistance or diabetes years before a doctor will do the correct blood test

(3:27) We are usually diagnosed with diabetes later in life, when in the years leading up to that we are causing damage to ourselves in many ways and we can prevent that

(4:44) What is insulin resistance? The majority of people don’t think it will happen to them in the future

(6:41) What is neuropathy and why does it matter? (Importance of feeling your feet)

(7:50) Neuropathy puts us at a higher risk of serious injury and even death

(9:33) All this is very preventable

(9:48) Importance of keeping a healthy blood sugar level

(10:08) How can we know that we are heading towards diabetes? & Triglycerides

(11:38) When we are talking about blood sugar, we aren’t only talking about eating cookies and candies. It is affected by carbs and alcohol for example

(12:00) Different types of foods that contain carbs

(12:46) People have the wrong idea of a healthy breakfast

(13:48) Our body breaks down carbs into sugars and if our body isn’t doing a good job metabolizing that sugar, it turns into fat

(14:19) HDO is your good cholesterol, that is often low in pre-diabetes & importance of cardiovascular exercise

(15:42) Serum insulin levels, this will let you know if you are insulin resistant or heading that direction. Checks how your body is metabolizing & how it is responding

(17:18) Risk factors for becoming insulin resistant

(18:17) Jake’s “WOW” moment after something Jenni said

(18:58) What you are doing right now is damaging your cells in your 50s,60s,70s

(20:04) Sleep patterns can increase risk of insulin resistance, as can sleep apnea, vitamin D defiance

(20:49) Can’t undo what you have done but you can compensate for it

(21:15) Examples of how we can control our blood sugar through other practices

(21:59) Biggest thing people should take away from this episode! (Ignorance is NOT bliss)

(22:18) Diabetes is one of the leading causes of mortality

(23:07) Being aware of your levels is one of the biggest things

(23:20) This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy occasional treats and this is what we help people with on a daily basis

(23:48) How many cookies does a glass of wine equal for your body?

  • Episode 29: Shoulder and Rotator Cuff Epidemic!

(1:13) Jake has gotten more calls about shoulder/rotator cuff issues over the past 18 months than ever before
(1:59) We are going to go over signs & symptoms of rotator cuff problems compared to an impingement, causes of shoulder dysfunction, whether you should get an MRI or X-Ray, how to interpret your MRI, do you need surgery or injections, if rest & ice help & can you heal a rotator cuff tear WITHOUT surgery and much more including tips to help!
(3:30) The reason for rise in shoulder issues is due to what is going on in the world, our lives have changed dramatically
(4:16) Signs & symptoms of a rotator cuff problem vs. impingement problem (two most common issues) & how we know the difference.
(5:20) Biggest sign of rotator cuff injury is night pain. Impingement syndrome is going to cause a sharp pinch when you try to raise your arm up when it gets to shoulder height
(7:08) Number one cause of shoulder pain is POOR POSTURE
(8:18) There are 18 muscles attached to your shoulder blade, when you are in poor posture these muscles are not as efficient
(9:01) Should you get an X-Ray or MRI? X-Rays look at bones, not soft tissues
(10:05) Getting an X-Ray will NOT give you clear information on what is causing your pain
(10:30) Jake’s story about what a surgeon told him years ago regarding MRIs
(11:16) Pre-MRI all you know is your shoulder hurts, you don’t have a medical diagnosis. When you get an MRI, you start attributing your pain to that and may have a victim mentality
(12:47) If you don’t want surgery, don’t get an MRI
(13:21) 99% of the time we can tell you if you need surgery within the first 5 minutes
(13:29) How to interpret an MRI
(14:48) When interpreting an MRI, Jake looks for Mild, Moderate or Severe
(15:30) Severe is the only one Jake knows you will need surgery
(16:25) Do you need surgery if your MRI shows a tear?
(17:20) If you have a moderate tear, go to physical therapy and not a cookie cutter one!(18:52) When we are doing shoulder exercises during rehab they should NOT hurt
(20:08) The first test Jake does to tell you if you need surgery within 5 MINUTES. It is called the
    shoulder shrug test
(21:01) A positive shoulder shrug drive is indicative that you may need surgery
(22:09) Should you get an injection? This question drives Jake NUTS!
(22:38) The injection WILL take the pain away but only temporarily and it will lead to further degradation of the shoulder. Just because the pain is gone doesn’t mean the shoulder is fixed
(23:27) 90% of the people Jake has come across that have gotten an injection, ended up getting surgery
(24:04) The only place Jake encourages getting an injection is for hip bursitis
(24:52) Will ice or rest help?
(25:31) Can you heal a rotator cuff tear w/o surgery?
(26:06) How long does it take to rehab conservatively vs post op? (About same amount of time)
(27:24) Biggest difference between rehab conservatively vs post op is amount PAIN you go through
(27:57) It is absolute hell for at least a week after rotator cuff surgery and it is tough to sleep
(29:16) Simple actionable tips that you can do to improve your rotator cuff/shoulder pain
(31:29) Don’t work through pain with your shoulder, it will NOT get better

(1:24) Supplements are personalized but we will go over the ones we have in store and they are individualized
(1:55) I don’t recommend anyone taking supplements without talking with their medical provider
(2:15) When we do supplement recommendations to our clients, we do lab work, blood work and much more based on their medical history and what supplements are best for them
(3:23) Most of us should be taking a multivitamin - make sure that the vitamins you already taking are not in the multivitamin
(4:47) CoQ10 may help with cholesterol and using a supplement called ubiquinol which can also help lowering cardiovascular inflammation
(5:27) There are different types of fish oil. Our fish oil doesn't repeat on you, when it does it is awful. Also reduces bad cholesterol (LDL) while increasing good cholesterol (HDL.) Also promotes good bacteria in gut lining
6:45) Need to have balance of good and bad fats
(7:00) We have Vitamin D, B12 (helps with metabolism and energy), Magnesium, Vitamin C & we hear alot about these supplements. B Complex contains all of the vitamins
(8:00) Magnesium is important for our bowel movements, important for muscle cramps and calming us before sleep. We find magnesium oxide or citrate over the counter which we don’t usually recommend
(9:01) Magnesium Glycinate & Magnesium Taurate are very good types of magnesium, they aren’t as hard on intestinal lining
(9:25) Vitamin D is fat soluble, so this can reach a toxic level, they should be monitored. Though vitamin D deficiency is very common
(10:20) Vitamin C is helpful for the immune system though too much can cause loose stool
(10:35) Gut healing supplements can be very beneficial not only to help with bowel movements but also by reducing inflammation, helping digestion, decreasing antibody levels that rises with food sensitivities
(10:56) Glutamine is a supplement that is used for muscle recovery but with that also helps with the gut lining
(11:30) Probiotics are a touchy subject. Some benefit from it, some can’t tolerate it because of a leaky gut
(12:28) Berberine helps with glucose metabolism or lowering blood sugar stores which helps increase burn fat. Be careful with medication interference
(13:15) We do use a supplement in our practice for people with autoimmune disease, specifically Hashimotos which can help with antibody levels and inflammation
(13:40) There are different supplements that help different people
(14:15) We do use supplements that help with sleep. I am against prescription medication for sleep but there are many natural aids that help with sleep
(15:48) L-Theanine is a very helpful amino acid to help reduce the stress response, adrenal fatigue and keeping that more stabilized
16:29) Methyl folate is one of the supplements I recommend for infertility
(17:10) If you have a question about any supplement, I recommend being careful with what supplements you use, as not all have been researched
(18:00) We use pure encapsulation in our office which is a hypoallergenic supplement and they do their own studies. It is important to know the quality behind your supplements. I don’t recommend going to the store and picking out any supplement
(18:58) Supplements can be helpful in a multitude of areas, just make sure it is right for you.(19:22) We are going to dive in on helping you guys take that next step to your overall wellness

  • Episode 27: Aging Gracefully - Specifically With Pain

*Today we are talking about aging gracefully - specifically with pain.

(2:00): A lot of people think pain is a normal part of the aging process. That they have to live with and deal with.

(2:55): Usually after we get into our 30s, things will start creeping up. We start to just blame it on getting older.

(4:00): Usually around 50 or 60, we are fully circum to the idea that we are just getting older, and it comes with that.

(6:00): Jenni will see a lot of mothers who for the first couple of years put their child first, and then will come to Jenni ready to better themselves.

(7:05): So getting them back on track with eating properly and strengthening back their core and glute muscles.

(9:16): An experiment for everyone - grab a backpack and put a 10 pound weight in it. Put the backpack on backwards, so resting on your chest/stomach, and just walk around your kitchen for 10 mins and you will start to feel yourself lean backwards to counteract the weight in the front. That is just only after a couple mins, imagine that after a couple years.

(11:18): Our skeleton is relatively the same person to person, so with 20 extra pounds it will put a strain on that skeleton.

(12:53): Your knees have no chance and neither does the lower lumbar when there is just too much excess weight. It is insane to see it visually in the picture that Jenni has in her office.

(13:09): So many people who have a normal body weight, when they start to get in their 60s - 80s they start to get aches and pains. They think it is a normal part of aging.

(13:38): Pain is not a normal part of aging.

(14:27): Why does anything get inflamed? It is overworked and underpaid. It could be a muscle, joint, tendon, or ligament.

(16:50): Generally, as we get older, the muscles in the front of the knee gets stronger than the muscles on the back of the knee - that forms an imbalance. This will lead to grinding and inflammation.

(19:05): What causes the pain after a knee replacement, if the joint is new? The surrounding soft tissues become inflamed.

(20:23): Candidates for knee replacements should begin to have their whole body evaluated to see if there is something else causing the pain - this is hard because there are too many cookie cutter clinics. They do not have the time to focus on quality but on quantity.

(21:19): Unlike Jake’s clinic. They focus 100% of their attention on you - they charge a ton of money (they are out of network) to look at you for an hour to check your entire body to see what is going on.

(22:35): Your gut health can also cause joint pains as well.

(22:50): Take home message: Just because you are getting older, does not mean you need to live in pain. Just because your x-ray says x,y,z does not mean you need to live in pain.

(23:30): The number one cause of pain is muscle imbalance.

(25:00): If you are in pain, it does not have to be that way. Ice, medication, and stretching is treating the symptom not the problem.

  • Episode 26: The Basics About Gut Health

*This week we are going over the basics of gut health and how it affects the body systematically.

(2:25): The curse of knowledge - a lot of times they will forget the vast majority of the population do not know about the very basic fundamentals.

(3:53): This week we are going over the basics of gut health and how it affects the body systematically.

(4:26): This affects everybody - everyone can benefit from this podcast today.

(5:03): Gluten sensitivity can present itself in a very large percentage of the population.

(6:09): People equate having diarrhea as being the symptom for gluten sensitivity or other food sensitivities.

(6:20): People automatically think gastro intestinal, diarrhea, and bloating to be symptoms of gluten sensitivity.

(8:20): The difference between a gluten sensitivity and gluten allergy is that they are different inflammatory markers and test. Keep in mind you can have the same reaction to a sensitivity and an allergy.

(9:25): An allergy is not more severe than a sensitivity, and sensitivity is not more severe than an allergy.

(10:50): The reaction does not present itself any quicker or slower if it is a sensitivity or allergy.

(12:00): Migraines, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain and bloating, spikes of anxiety or depression, joint pains, reflux, and heartburn can be associated with food sensitivities.

(15:00): Jake knows that he has food sensitivities that lead him to have heartburn and reflux; he ignores it and treats the symptom when it occurs and not the problem. This can lead to him having an inflamed esophagus, and further damage to other autoimmune disorders from constant systemic inflammation.

(17:12): Jake has acute Inflammation, but he only notices it with heartburn. He has it, but it is not the most intense symptom he feels.

(19:05): The brain can generally only focus on one injured thing at a time.

(21:20): Jake would have told you he was living a perfect life as far as food goes, then after doing his first food sensitivity screen -his results came back with eggs being a high sensitivity, he took eggs out 95% of his diet.

(23:32): Initially, you may think you do not have any issues at all with any foods but then once you do a guy healing process and heal the gut you will be amazed with how you will feel or with the symptoms you were experiencing before and did not realize it.

(24:30): Gluten sensitivity doesn't just come with diarrhea, it can come with anything, eczema, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis.

(25:18): Jenni at the age of 16 was taking oral steroids and medicated shampoo for her seborrheic dermatitis, and within 6 weeks of eliminating gluten, she stopped taking all medications.

(25:40): Jenni had no idea for 15 years! Then she took gluten out because of GI issues and it ended up helping her scalp.

(27:30): Contact us if you are wondering about your food sensitivities - we can do it anywhere, it does not have to be done in Naples, FL.
