  • Episode 25: The Method Proven to Help You Outdrive Your Buddies and Hit Shorter Irons Into The Green

The Berman Method of Golf Performance: the method proven to help you outdrive your buddies and hit shorter irons into the green even if you are 60 or older.

    • (1:08):Jake has been working, the past year, on developing a technique specifically for golfers over the age of 60 to help them increase distance off the tee.
    • (1:23):The technique has been patented as The Berman Method of Golf Performance.
    • (2:30):Jake has been fine tuning this method on what are the  very specific things that need to be happening in order to increase distance off the tee & not have back pain.
    • (3:55):He looked into what is the specific mobility required and muscles required to maximize distance and minimize stress on the body.
    • (4:40):Jake has created three different groups of people he is working with right now to just show everybody that it does not matter how old you are, if you have physical disabilities, or if you are a scratch golfer or not scratch golfer.
    • (6:18):The second guy he is working with, the Godfather, has physical restrictions, where both of his legs below the knees are paralyzed, he has got an autoimmune disorder that essentially killed all the nerves in his lower legs.
    • (8:50):take someone that is over 60, that might not be able to hit it 200 yards off the tee, and  you give them 10 more yards, that significantly increases their chances of reaching the green in regulation.
    • (11:14):If you are a golfer, you know how much the mental aspect plays into the game. It is evident every single weekend when you look at the pros.
    • (16:15):When someone 60 plus gets 10 yards more off the tee - it completely changes the game, it even changes their enjoyment of the game.
    • (17:23):Age is not the determining factor of losing, muscles is the determining factor of losing distance off the tee.
    • (17:50):Generally speaking, most amateur golfers use momentum to hit the golf ball, not power.
    • (18:12):Power is for muscles, you use muscles to generate power. When you use muscle to hit the golf ball it goes farther.
    • (18:38):Momentum on the other hand, is not controlled by power. If you use momentum after the age of 60
    • (20:28): This is not golf philosophy or golf technique. Jake is not teaching a golf lesson.
    • (21:00): What he cares about is using the right muscles at the right time to generate more power so that you hit the ball farther.
    • (22:23): This makes the lesson you just paid for exponentially more beneficial, because you can actually do what your pro is trying to get you to do.
    • (22:40): Ed, 71 years old, hitting his 6-iron 155 yards. After working with him for a while, he began hitting 186 yards with his 6-iron.
    • (24:00): The biggest report is with the six guys who are starting the program. Jake can't wait to start talking about their results, all six of them are so unique.

  • Episode 24: What You Probably Do Not Know About Fertility, Infertility, and Abnormal Menstrual Cycles

(1:26): We discuss fertility, infertility, abnormal menstrual cycle and different auto-immune diseases.
(2:26): Jake and Jenni tried for 4 years to have their daughter Stella. They went through fertility treatments.
(2:39): They had 2 pregnancies, one made it to the 2nd trimester, a little boy, that they lost and another one they lost earlier on after a successful IUI (Intrauterine Insemination).
(3:56): There are many different causes for infertility and abnormal menstrual cycles - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Endometriosis, a Secondary Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, not getting your cycles regularly, simple inflammatory responses in the gut biome that lead to abnormal menstrual cycles.
(4:37): Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is commonly related to insulin resistance or pre-diabetes, with potentially overweight and commonly abnormal/missed cycles, as well as hair growth on chin or lower parts of the cheeks. Testosterone levels will also be higher as well.
(5:40): PCOS, most of the time related to abnormal blood sugar or insulin resistance. The body is storing food as sugar which increases the insulin. This can lead to people getting thick tissues in the endometrial lining, it can create abnormal menstrual cycles, as well as making pregnancy very difficult.
(7:20): If you are sensitive to a food and have other inflammatory type symptoms, abnormal menstrual cycles or simple infertility, these can be related to gut-health & internal inflammation.
(8:00): Gut Microbiome - is the environment that makes up inside your gut lining. If you are sensitive to a food or your body does not metabolize food efficiently, or your storing food as sugar can cause inflammation.
(8:36): This inflammation can affect your hormone levels, so the progesterone and estrogen levels won’t be optimal for fertilization or implantation.
(9:10): Inflammation can affect the endometrial lining. The lining has to be a certain thickness in order for the egg to successfully implant.
(9:43): Stress is a big factor of infertility.
(10:48): Not exercising or over exercising can lead to infertility issues.
(11:42): Gut health is huge in infertility
(12:14): Leaky Gut - gut lining is not healthy and breaks down, which allows food particles to pass into the gut lining, then the body treats the particles as a foreign body and the immune system is on overdrive.
(13:16): Can affect the shaping of the egg and the sperm. Thus fertilization does not occur. Or it will occur but the shapes and abnormal environment can lead to birth defects.
(14:00): The inflammatory process is the number one cause of many infertility issues.
(14:20): First thing you can do is a food sensitivity test, to see which food is causing an inflammatory response in your body.
(15:03): L-glutamine is a gut healing supplement, a natural amino acid, used to help as a digestive enzyme and repair the gut lining. It is safe to use during pregnancy.
(16:05): Looking at vitamin levels, because the leaky guy or the inflammation can lead to vitamin deficiencies, which play a huge role in infertility.
(16:47): Look at the foods your body is sensitive to & create a meal plan with food elimination to help with the gut healing plan with vitamin and supplement optimization.
(17:45): If you aren't looking to get pregnant but have a history of endometriosis or thyroids, this also can relate to you.
(18:17): This is still important if you are not looking to get pregnant or past the pregnant stage in your life, you can still help heal the gut and inflammation.

  • Episode 23: New Year, New You Kickstart Program!

(0:57): Christmas is Jenni’s favorite day of the year!
(1:30): Every year Jake gets more clothes from Jenni and her family - meaning he has a completely new wardrobe now from when he met Jenni (11 years ago!!)
(2:30): Jake has had the same pair of slacks since 8th grade - which he got for his 8th grade dance.
(4:25): Accountability is the main reason people stop going to the gym 6 weeks after the new year.
(5:00): Kickstart Program - a 6 week program where we provide weekly accountability meetings.
(6:20): Built to help hold people accountable, but also built for the people who do not want to “put in the work” to do the work. Everything is written out (meal plan, grocery list) and videos created (workout plans).
(7:11): Kickstart Program starts January 3rd! The last day to sign up is tomorrow!
(7:30): Kickstart Program = A 6 week program with weekly meal plans (have 7 day meal plan, breakfast, snack, lunch, snack dinner) - meal plans change day to day and week to week. Provides a variety. Mix & Match & Rotate as you wish.
(8:15): Provide a grocery list. The grocery list is created in categories so you can go in and mark off what you already have at home. Have an amazon link that has the snacks that are recommended. A lot of the things can be found on Amazon or local grocery stores.
(8:55): Developed the meal plan primarily off an insulin resistant individual. This is still a  wonderful meal plan for anyone - keeping the macro nutrients, protein, carbs, and fats in a good line. Keeping energy up, blood sugars stable, and helping sleep.
(10:15): There are weekly zoom meetings. Jenni is available along the way for being successful (email, phone, text). If you need help, do not like a product, do not know what to switch, Jenni is here to help through it all.
(11:20): The reason people are being successful is because of the weekly accountability meetings. You will talk about what you struggled with and what you succeeded with.
(13:15): The workouts can be done at home or gym. There are options to change things up in the videos - such as the level of difficulty.
(13:40): There is not a single successful person in this world who got there on their own. There is always that one person who helps get that person there (coaches, mentors, etc.).
(16:20): Coaches are able to see things that their “players” are not able to see. They have done this and know what to look out for and see. They help you get on track much quicker.
(17:18): If something is not working, and adjustments need to be made, Jenni and her team have the knowledge on what to do in helping you reach your goal and being successful.
(18:25): Average is a 9 lb weight loss on this program. The goal is 8-10 lbs. We have had someone lose up to 14 lbs.
(19:10): We like to see these numbers because it is giving a sustainable weight loss number, not a crash/fad diet that will help you lose weight fast, but not sustainable, and comes right back.
(19:37): 1-2 lbs a week is a sustainable weight loss. We also want to create a lifestyle, it is us helping you stay on track and keeping a balance in your life to maintain the weight loss and new healthy way of life.
(21:07) If you miss the day to sign up - contact us and we can see if we can squeeze you in. It all depends on the spots we have left. Spots are limited!
(22:00): You do not have to be in Naples,FL to start this program. You can be anywhere in the world!

    **HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE BERMANS!!**

(3:25): The best Christmas gift this season is Dr. Jake Berman’s Book: The Berman Method of Golf Performance. www.bermanpt.com/book
(4:00): Jenni’s BOOTCAMP! Second Annual KICKSTART for New Years Resolutions. To help everyone maintain their routines and not fall off the bandwagon.
(4:40): The average weight gain from Halloween to New Year is about 12 pounds - essentially.
(5:30): Jenni’s clients can average around a 15-pound weight loss during that period of time.
(6:00): Start now! Get a head start this holiday season instead of waiting for the New Year.
(7:09): It is easy to quit when things get hard. Progress is just one step forward.
(8:54): This holiday season is about lifestyle balance. You do not have to be perfect 100% of the time to lose weight and heal your gut. Just maintain balance.
(9:36): KICKSTART is a 6 week Bootcamp that is starting the first week of January. Jenni is handing over a successful platform to clients. She is giving clients sustainable weight loss while living a balanced lifestyle. An average of 8 to 10 pounds per client.
(11:25): Jenni’s favorite thing about Christmas is spending time with her family!
(12:23): Jake’s favorite thing to look forward to during Christmas is Bruce Springsteen’s Holiday Station on Pandora!
(13:41): Thanksgiving is the appropriate time to listen to a couple of Christmas songs! No earlier than Thanksgiving.
(14:25): Jenni’s family has the kids sleeping upstairs on Christmas Eve night. So that when Santa comes in the middle of the night, when they walk out they will see ALL of the wrapped presents and unwrapped presents.
(15:13): In Jenni’s house Santa’s presents were not wrapped. Santa can decide on whose presents to wrap.
(17:30): Jenni and Jake have Christmas Eve dinner with Jenni’s mom. All the girls and cousins in the family wear the same PJs. The next morning they all gather at Jenni’s mom’s home for Christmas brunch.
(19:06): Luckily, Jake’s brother-in-law is in town, so they can sneak away and go use the Berman Method Golf Strategy on the green.
(19:48): Next week, they will be talking about getting back on track.
(19:59): Get the Berman Method of Golf Performance book as a late Christmas present to your 60 plus pals who are looking to improve their distance. www.bermanpt.com/book

  • Episode 21: The Berman Method of Golf Performance

PC 21: The Berman Method of Golf Performance

**Recruiting the right muscles at the right time, that will generate more power.
**The method that is proven to start driving out your buddies at the tee and hitting short irons onto the green, even if you are 60 plus.
**Helping you enjoy the game more!

(0:50): Dr. Berman’s new book - The Berman Method of Golf Performance. Help you out-drive your buddies, hit shorter irons into the green, even if you are 60 plus.
    www.bermanpt.com/book
(1:16): Perfect gift for anyone you know. Pretty much applicable to anyone over the age of 60 who plays golf.
(1:43): A vast majority of golfers who golf their entire life or competitively can hit the ball really well off the tee through their 50s. Then in their 60-65s, it begins to nose dive.
(3:45): The equation of The Berman Method of Golf Performance is power equals work overtime. P = W/T
(4:11): If your body can move better and work more efficiently the ball will go farther.
(4:42): In general, the body moves differently before the age of 60 than after the age of 60. The only thing that does not change a whole lot is swing.
(5:13): A majority of amateur golfers are using momentum to hit the golf ball versus muscles to hit the golf ball. This works fine when you have the right technique.
(5:53): Momentum equals Mass times Velocity. Momentum = M x V. Mass = how heavy the golf club is. Velocity = how fast can you swing it.
(6:30): As golfers get older they generally swing lighter clubs than heavier clubs, so they can swing faster. Golfers are then swinging a lighter club, as well as swinging it slower, so the momentum goes down as well.
(7:08): Switch to the power equation so that golfers can gain 25 yards farther on the tee in 12 weeks.
(7:58): The only way to increase power is to increase the amount of work being done. Work is the number of muscles being used.
(8:40): If you use more muscles you’re going to generate more power. If you hit the golf ball with more power, it is physically impossible for the ball to not go farther.
(9:21): Dr. Berman is giving you the ability to recruit the right muscles at the right time that will generate more power and the ball will go farther.
(10:26): The method that is proven to start driving out your buddies at the tee and hitting short irons onto the green, even if you are 60 plus.
(11:06): A ten-question quiz on www.bermanpt.com/golf will tell you if it is likely or not that you will gain distance using this technique.

Podcast 20: Challenge: 10,000 Squats in 365 Days!

** 10,000 squats in a year will make you stronger next year than you are today.
** 30 squats a day (with intention) will only take 3 mins of your day.

(2:35): Challenge: 30 Squats a day over the course of a year, 365 days. This will come out to 10,950 squats a year.
(4:10): The reason for doing 30 squats a day is to become stronger than you are a year from today than you are now.
(6:08): Every time you sit on a chair, it's a squat. Every time you sit on a commode, it is considered a squat. Every time you get in and out of a vehicle, it is a squat.
(7:30): Dr. Berman has a new book out! The Berman Method of Golf Performance! For golfers over the age of 60 who want to increase the distance off the tee.
    www.bermanpt.com/book
(12:50): Stronger legs are important so you do not have back pain, as well as, not having to struggle to get out of a chair.
(14:00): You are less likely to get out of the chair more frequently throughout the day if it is harder to do.
(15:47): These are not considered proper squats into chairs: Plop down: a controlled fall into a chair or using momentum to get back up: using your hands to push off of an armrest/legs to stand up out of a chair.
(16:50): When you plop down and use momentum to get back up you are not using muscles. If you do not use it, you lose it.
(18:30): Make it take 3 seconds for you to sit down. Make it take 3 seconds to stand up. Takes 3 minutes a day to invest in being stronger next year than you are today.

**Exercise is Progressive - something always has been progressing: repetitions, sets, or weight.
**Learn about Exercise Progression with sets, repetitions, and intensity!
**We can provide weekly workouts to YOUR inbox!

(2:50): The weight you are lifting can increase. The repetitions in each set can increase.  The number of sets can increase.
(5:20): If you do the same exercises every single day without any changes, you are Working and not Exercising.
(7:15): If you are not progressing, your metabolism will slow down and muscle mass will decrease as we age.
(10:30): When you are exercising - there is good pain and bad pain. Muscle burning with lactic acid build-up is good.
(11:15): Good pain generally stops intensifying as soon as you stop the exercise. It should be resolved in 1-2 minutes. Non-productive pain can linger.
(12:20): DOMS - Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. This is a good pain where the muscles are breaking down, lactic acid building up, and muscle fibers regenerating. As you start to move, i.e. getting out of the chair and taking a few steps, this improves.
(14:15): You don’t get old and then stiff - you get stiff and then old. If you don’t move regularly, you won’t keep it… you will get stiff.
(16:15): Sit to Stand Exercise - Week 1: 3 sets of 10 reps, Week 2: 4 sets of 10 reps, Week 3: 4 sets of 15. Week 4: Eccentric sit to stand for 3 sets of 10 (slow sitting, quick standing) OR holding a 5-pound weight while you sit to stand.

(1:30): Most common reason with the easiest fix to headaches - Dehydration.

(2:25): 80 ounces of water minimum in a day for most individuals, 100 ounces or 1 gallon may be recommended for some individuals. There are some people who should NOT drink this much - contact your physician.

(3:40): Front load your water - get more than half of the water by 10am.

  • Episode 16: Knee Pain

**Dr. Jake Berman, PT, DPT Debunks the most common myths about “You NEED a Knee Replacement.”

**There is one common reason why you still have knee pain after surgery.

(1:00): Can you do anything for me if my knee is “bone-on-bone?” Myth DEBUNKED.

(2:45): Sometimes one knee hurts more than the other, but the one that hurts less actually LOOKS worse on the Xray. So, is the bone-on-bone actually causing the pain?

(5:20): The pain response to knee pain is actually coming from the soft tissues AROUND the knee.

(7:20): Quad muscles help to support the front of the knee, but the gluteus muscles are very important to support the whole knee - 360 degrees.

(9:40): If you can get your knee into complete extension and hyperextension, you likely do NOT need a knee replacement.

(10:30): When the knee is slightly bent, you cannot activate the gluteus muscles - which are the main stabilizers!

(12:40): Debunking the thought that “bad knees” is genetic!

(13:30): We typically mirror our parents posture and mannerisms.

(14:50): Popping and grinding of the knee is called Crepitus - this does not mean you have to have a knee replacement! The crepitus is not the bone grinding.

(16:25): Torn Meniscus - does this require surgery? NOT always!!

(17:20): If your knee is not locking and you can get full knee extension - you may NOT need surgery for the meniscus!

    (18:30): Meniscus repair versus Menisectomy…

(19:00): A Traumatic tear versus chronic tear - this also matters!

(20:35): Physical therapy is important after ANY surgery - no matter the extent! You need to get the quadriceps and gluteus muscles working again!!

(22:00): If you’re still having pain after surgery it is likely because you have not gotten full knee extension and you have not reactivated the butt muscles!!
