God raised up Gideon after the Israelites had suffered for 7 years. One of the reasons for the suffering was fear. The bible says, "God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind." Many times when God calls you to do something, the voice of fear will rise up and try to talk you out of what God has called you to do.

God will confirm major decisions through peace, circumstances, the Word and Godly counsel. Sometimes you will just have a knowing. There will be no reason to explain, it will be known on the inside. Honor God and He will work it out. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

This tells us that the thing that we are passionate about is the thing He wants to help us solve. God reveals to Gideon that he has called him and "surely I will be with you."
