Bongani Bingwa speaks to Dr Nompumelelo Mohohlwane, Director of the Reading Directorate at the National department of basic education, as the Africa Report turns its focus to early literacy in the classroom. Early literacy skills are a strong predictor of future reading achievement and overall school success. Spelling plays a key role in this development, helping children understand the connection between letters and sounds and improving their ability to decode words and express ideas through writing. As young learners from across the continent prepare to compete in an African spelling competition next week, the discussion explores how South African learners compare with their peers and what is being done to strengthen reading outcomes.

Bongani Bingwa shares this week’s Black Sheep Thinking feature powered by Camissa Asset Management, highlighting how unconventional ideas can transform the world. For decades, high jumpers used traditional techniques like the scissors or straddle, and progress had plateaued. Then Dick Fosbury tried something radically different, jumping backwards and arching his body over the bar in what became known as the Fosbury Flop. Coaches mocked it and judges doubted it, but Fosbury proved them wrong by winning gold at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Gregory Maqoma, one of South Africa’s most celebrated choreographers, about his new production Genesis. This bold dance opera blends movement, live music, and poetry to explore themes of creation, transformation, and the cycle of existence. Premiering in Cape Town, the show comes to the Joburg Theatre from 19 to 22 March, featuring the performers of Vuyani Dance Theatre and a world-class creative team. Known for creating performances that move and challenge audiences, Gregory shares what makes Genesis a journey rather than just a show, and what theatre-goers can expect from this immersive experience.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Vicki Turner for a roundup of global stories making headlines. They discuss the backlash against Formula One’s planned 2026 car regulations, with reigning champion Max Verstappen among drivers criticising the changes, prompting a response from F1 chief Stefano Domenicali. They also look at a lighter story from the UK, where around 70 competitors took part in the annual wife-carrying race in Dorking, Surrey, a quirky Nordic-inspired contest held around International Women's Day that sees participants race while carrying their partners or teammates up and down a hill.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Suhael Raghunath, a Durban-based chef and the latest contestant eliminated from MasterChef South Africa. His ambitious goat cheese soufflé in the latest episode failed to impress the judges, bringing his time on the competition to an end. Known for his sharp knife skills, precision and fearless creativity, shaped in part by his martial arts discipline, Suhael left a strong impression during his run.

Bongani Bingwa is joined by Khabazela to unpack the latest social media trends. They look at the viral “CEO bandwagon” challenge, where people imagine their boss doing their job for a day and ask what CEOs would struggle with most if roles were reversed alongside a lighter online debate about who really makes the ultimate burger. They also explore the growing Misogi challenge, inspired by a Japanese tradition of taking on one big, uncomfortable challenge each year that pushes personal limits, and invite listeners to share what their Misogi for the year might be.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Bobby Ramagwede, CEO of the Automobile Association of South Africa, and Tseliso Maqubela, Deputy Director-General for Mineral and Petroleum Regulation, about the potential impact of the escalating Middle East conflict on South Africa’s fuel supply and prices. As global oil prices climb amid growing instability, concerns are mounting about disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but critical route through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. Any interruption could send fuel prices sharply higher and raise questions about whether South Africa has sufficient reserves to withstand a prolonged disruption.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Zanele Muholi, the acclaimed South African visual activist who has made history by becoming the first Black queer South African to win the prestigious Hasselblad Award. Widely regarded as one of the world’s most important photography honours, the award recognises Muholi’s powerful body of work documenting and celebrating Black LGBTQIA+ lives in South Africa and beyond. Their portraits challenge prejudice while preserving stories of identity, dignity and resistance. Later this year, Muholi’s work will also feature in a major solo exhibition in Sweden, marking another milestone in a career dedicated to visibility and social change.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Adam Gilchrist about escalating violence in Lebanon as Israel intensifies operations against Hezbollah in the Bekaa Valley, while Donald Trump warns citizens in Iran to stay home amid rising regional tensions. The conversation also looks at the baffling disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of US TV presenter Savannah Guthrie, who vanished from her home in Tucson, Arizona more than a month ago, and ends with a lighter topic as experts warn that stacking saucepans in cupboards could damage cookware and shorten its lifespan.

Bongani Bingwa is joined by Khabazela. Today’s discussion dives into two relatable themes that spark debate online and on air. First, listeners are asked to reflect on those surprising discoveries about their parents, the stories you learn later in life that suddenly make you see them in a completely different light. Maybe it was a daring adventure, a hidden talent, or a moment of bravery that left you impressed and a little proud. Then the conversation shifts to the idea of the “guilty purchase” those small indulgences we buy for ourselves that bring joy but sometimes come with a hint of guilt. From comfort food and gadgets to spontaneous treats, listeners share the little things they spend money on just to brighten their day.
