The Best of the Sports Shop

Reese, Kmac, Pam and Alex speak with Dr. Deborah Stroman.

Dr. Stroman discusses the situation involving Chelsea Gray and how it reflects broader societal issues, including misogyny, racism, the influence of online communities that promote hostility toward women and the broader cultural conditions that contribute to gender-based violence, including femicide.

Chelsea Gray of the Las Vegas Aces revealed that she received a racist direct message after the team's loss to the Indiana Fever, sharing a screenshot on Instagram that included a racial slur. She said the abuse reflects a broader problem of athletes, particularly Black players, facing racist harassment online. After internet users identified the alleged sender, Hilton Grand Vacations investigated and announced that the employee had been fired for violating company policies and values. The incident followed a highly publicized on-court interaction between Gray and Caitlin Clark, which fueled intense online attention. Dr. Stroman argues that incidents like this illustrate how misogyny and racism can intersect in sports, and she discusses how some online communities, including self-identified incel groups, can reinforce hostility toward women. She also connects these patterns of dehumanization and hate to the broader continuum of gender-based violence, including femicide.
