May 14th sees the return of The Night of the 10,000m PBs. Hosted by Highgate Harriers at their Parliament Hill track the night promises a celebration of world-class athletics and show-stopping entertainment combined to create an event with no equal. To celebrate its return The Big Run Podcast has teamed up with The Night of 10ks to produce a series of preview podcasts. Starting this Monday and running every weekday up until the event. Join me as I talk to key figures both on and off the track gaining insight into what makes this event so unique in the world of athletics. We’ll conclude the series with a special episode recorded live at the event on May 14th going live on the 21st. A perfect opportunity to relive that lane 3 beer and cheer memories. Join me this Monday for the first episode. Only on The Big Run. -------------------------------------- With the support of Like The Wind Magazine and Select Imagery from Curated for Runners. Like the Wind is an independent journal telling stories about running. Since issue 1, Like the Wind has been published quarterly, with 31 issues under its belt. It is sold mainly through subscriptions, to readers in 40 countries. The strapline of the magazine is: it’s why we run (not how to run) and so there are no product reviews, training plans or nutrition tips. Instead, Like the Wind explores topics such as the environment, social issues (like racism or gender inequality), mental health and – quite often – the simple joy of running. Like the Wind will be producing a special edition programme for Night of the 10,000m PB's for all attendees to the event on May 14th Like the Wind can be found at www.likethewindmagazine.com where people can subscribe and on Instagram and Twitter as @likethewindmag. --------
Running Towards Nature. Hello and welcome back to The Big Run. Last Sunday on a sunny Easter weekend. I had the chance to link with Marlon Patrice and some of the members of We Go Outside Too. Marlon had organised a coach to bring members of the group down to Kew Gardens in London. Following the tragic death of his son in 2020, due to knife crime, and the onset of the COVID pandemic, Marlon was compelled to turn his grief into a power for good. ‘We Go Outside Too’ is his brainchild, an active group making the countryside accessible, with a clear focus on empowering the Black Community to experience the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of nature. A keen runner, Marlon has been a member of City of Birmingham Striders since 2010, recently turning out for the national road relays as well as taking on the Palestine Marathon. I tagged along to chat with Marlon and some members of the group as they explored Kew. A big thankyou to Marlon Patrice, Tessfa Boyd, Abdul Abz Shahid and Jazzmin Fletcher for their time. You can find out more about We Go Outside Too, Marlon and Patrees Herb and Wellness using the links below https://www.instagram.com/wegooutsidetoo/ https://www.instagram.com/marlonpatrice/ https://www.instagram.com/patreesherbsandwellness/
Hello and welcome back to The Big Run... Todays guest is Ryan Willms Ryan is a Creative Director, podcast host, holistic life coach and magazine founder. He uses movement as a tool for self-exploration as well as performance. Originally from Canada but now based out in LA he works with hugely established brands to create rich and meaningful experiences. In this conversation, we touch on his early life in Canada and starting inventory magazine out of a one-bedroom apartment that was a photo studio, meeting room, hr and everything else in between to grinding down his own physical and mental health through flat out work in the fashion industry to his own journey of self-discovery through alternative medicines and practices before moving onto his experience with movement, the foundational role it plays in his life and how mindfulness and endurance can go hand in hand… You can find more about Ryan and his work at https://www.ryanwillms.com/ The Mindfulness Endurance programme here: https://mindfulenduranceprogram.substack.com/p/mep-welcome?s=w And the run programme here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CaLAbLVvdXu/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ****COMPETITION INFORMATION**** Im pleased to announce that this month Big Run is supported by SOAR Running. SOAR produce high-performance running apparel – from the fastest race-kit on the market, to fit for purpose, function-first training staples. And, they are soon to launch a women’s range. This spring SOAR are giving you – and a running partner - the chance to win a Marathon System each. Comprised of a pair of marathon shorts with integrated storage for up to 6 in-race gels, plus an ultra lightweight Race Vets 4.0 – weighing in at just 47g in a size M. For your chance to win they want to hear about a performance by a training partner, or friend of yours, which has inspired you recently. It’s not just about smashing a PB or breaking the tape though. Performance can – and does – mean different things to different folk. So we want to hear about a performance which has inspired you, stood out to you, or overcome adversity. It doesn’t need to be race-related either, it can be training progress, a huge personal feat, returning from injury or embracing a new running challenge. We just want to hear why it’s inspired you, and is a worthy winner, in no more than 250 words! To submit your nominee – and be in with a chance to win – simply email your tale to [email protected] with ‘Performance Of The Month’ in the subject line. Nominations must be in by Monday 11th April. Then, I’ll be sitting down with the team at SOAR to decide our chosen winner, based on the case we think is most compelling. Both the winning nominee and nominator will win a Marathon System and we’ll announce the winner later in April. What’s more…. SOAR are also offering 15% off for listeners of the Big Run Podcast until the end of April – so kit yourself out for spring race day, or the summer miles ahead and enter code bigrun15 when checking out at soarrunning.com

Todays guest is Luke Caldwell. Luke competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games achieving 13th place in the 5000m and 14th in the 10,000m. He currently resides in Boulder, Colorado and is a member of The Roots Running collective that boasts an impressive stable of Athletes alongside Luke. The team there helped Luke achieve an impressive 2:11:30 marathon debut. In this conversation, we talk a little about Luke's job as a physicist, the kind of projects he works on and how they apply to our everyday understanding of the universe.
