One of my absolute favorite things about traveling is not so much seeing all the typical tourist attractions, but going out and watching the behavior and culture of dogs in countries. We can learn so, so much by observing how dogs navigate their worlds in other places on our planet. And I’ve been wanting to chat with Sindhoor Pangal for a long time because she is one of the world’s foremost experts on street dogs, or streeties as she refers to them in the most endearing way.
We chat about the challenges the dogs face, living in India, as well as the many benefits of not actually being confined in a home environment. I think you will really enjoy hearing Sindhoor share her unique insights in this episode.

Sindhoor is a canine behaviour consultant, a canine myotherapist and an engineer by qualification. She is a TEDx speaker, the author of the book, Dog Knows and an independent ethology researcher studying the free-ranging dogs in India. About Sean and Maasa:

Maasa and Sean studied under Dr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz and earned their master's degrees in Behavior Analysis from the University of North Texas. While studying at UNT, they developed and pursued research on Constructional Affection, created constructional shelter programs to increase shelter efficiency, and trained shelter staff and volunteers. They have provided consulting for individuals and organizations that oversee the care of animals. Currently, Sean is in Florida Tech's doctoral program researching problem-solving and animal training.

In 2020, Maasa and Sean founded the Constructional Approach to Animal Welfare and Training (CAAWT). CAAWT is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide free training to individuals and organizations that need training and cannot afford it. Welcome to Season Three of The Bitey End of the Dog! About Jean Donaldson:

The Academy for Dog Trainers was founded in 1999 by Jean Donaldson.

She ran it for ten years as a residential program at The San Francisco SPCA before spending a year and a half re-inventing the curriculum in its current form as a two-year e-learning course. The new format broadens the scope and content of the original program, includes the latest research on behavior and training, and allows students a much longer enrollment time so that they may study, “marinate” and integrate concepts and skills, train and fit their course work around their life commitments.

Jean is one of the top dog trainers in the world and has lectured extensively in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. She is a four-time winner of The Dog Writers’ Association of America’s Maxwell Award, and her seminal book The Culture Clash was named number one training and behavior book by The Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Her other titles are Mine! A Guide to Resource Guarding in Dogs, Fight! A Guide to Dog-Dog Aggression, Dogs Are From Neptune, and Oh Behave! Dogs From Pavlov to Premack to Pinker.

Her most recent book, Train Like a Pro, was her first written training guide for a lay audience. In 2017, Jean authored and instructed Dog Training 101 for The Great Courses.

Before transitioning full-time to pet dog training, Jean competed in dog sports with dogs of various breeds, earning numerous titles and wins including OTCh, HIT, TDX, and FDCh, as well as a CGC. She ran a successful training school for fifteen years, and spent six years doing primarily referral aggression cases. She holds a degree in comparative psychology and is a keen student of evolutionary biology.

This is a very special episode for this podcast as Laura Monaco Torelli joins me to share her personal and poignant experience from a traumatic dog attack that occurred two years ago.
 I want to thank Laura for trusting me as a friend and colleague to have a safe space to talk about the terrifying events from that day.

I also want to give a trigger warning for this episode as we discuss a dog attack that resulted in injuries to both Laura and her beloved dog Vito. We don’t often discuss the impact on victims of dog bites, so our hope is that this show will provide some solace that you are not alone.  If you have experienced trauma from a dog bite incident, there is help available, and there is a link below for emotional and crisis support.
