The Blurred Nerds

An exciting return to sold out movies:

Spider-Man: No Way Home has accomplished what other movies haven't been able to over the pandemic - sell out multiple showings and bring packed movie-going experiences back to the masses.

Both Lil' Bit & The Geekfather share some spoiler filled thoughts on the movie, the joy of seeing in with rooms packed full of fans again and hopes for more to come.

Was it a welcome return to the Matrix?

Rarely does it happen - but we didn't agree on how good or bad Matrix Resurrections is. Who found it worthy and who could have done without?

Plus, a little Hawkeye discussion to round out the hour.

All that and much more!

Disappointed:

What do Invasion and Encounter have in common? Aliens! And what do both of them lack? ALIENS. We discuss our frustrations and disappointment with both of these to start off the episode.

Then we jump into our biweekly recap of genre shows and recent news in the nerd world of entertainment.

In the second half of the show,

Sad news recently announced from the wonderful George Perez this past week. We discuss his announcement, his impact on media as well as people and the decision he has made going forward.

Also, big Happy Birthday to Mr. Pillow himself, Timmy!

Is there such a thing as too much dessert?:

Day recap where we discuss the age old question of how much food is just too much. 🤣

Also, now that holiday breaks have hit, we have time to catchup on a few of the new shows and movies that released on streaming services the past week.

Thankfully (ba-dum-dum) everything we have watched recently has shown promise: Arcane, Discovery's new season, Wheel of Time and more.

We round out the second part of the show with more recaps and recommendations. Disney Plus drops two episodes of Hawkeye for us this past week and 8 Bit Christmas on HBO Max became an instant holiday classic for us. Aimed perfectly at our own childhood Christmas memories, we break down the memories and emotions the movie brought up in each of us.

All that and much more!

Movie reviews from the theater and streaming:

Don't listen to the critics or aggregator scores folks! Go see a movie for yourself before reading reviews or checking the ratings from people who are paid to find flaws - you just might enjoy it without the external influences. You guessed it - we're discussing Eternals. As per usual, spoilers this episode as we break down our thoughts after seeing it as well as dissecting some of the different reviews we've seen about it. Are their pacing issues? Sure. A lot of characters and stories to get through in one movie? You betcha. Is it about as long as Dune? Also yes - but there is also a lot to appreciate from Marvel's newest release.

Speaking of Marvel, Shang Chi hit Disney+ this week and we step back to once again appreciate this new superhero origin movie.

One more movie to top of the week, Finch arrived on Apple+. This new movie starring Tom Hanks, an adorable dog and a robot tugs at the heartstrings and delivers a solid well acted & told story.

In the second half of the show,

We round out the second part of the show heading back to the House of Mouse for Disney+ Day and run down all the announcements, trailers and teasers that filled our Friday.

All that and much more!

He who controls the Spice, controls the Universe:

Dune Part 1 is finally here! We chat about our impressions of the film and try to be as spoiler free as possible.

Suffice to say, we loved it. The epic scale, the score, surprising performances - this movie ticked off many of the boxes we look for when venturing out to theater instead of saving a flick to watch at home.

In the second half of the show,

We venture into a much heavier topic this part of the show - the unfortunate events that occurred on the set of Rust in New Mexico and how this unfortunate situation ties into exactly what the IATSE demands for their members have been attempting to prevent moving forward.

All that and much more!

Big new from G4 - they'll be returning to linear TV on November. That means more Attack of The Show, Ninja Warrior and new programs will soon be here!

James Gunn has confirmed it - we'll be seeing Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Plus we chat about recent shows and movies we have enjoyed.

In the second half of the show,

Netflix recently released Attack of the Hollywood Cliches - so we break out and discuss some of our favorite cliches mentioned in the show.

Fall means we are finally getting some new premieres. Foundation has arrived on Apple TV, the Great British Bake Off returns for more and just in time for the spooky season, Mike Flannagan brings Midnight Mass to the masses.

Surprising many Doctor Who fans, it was announced this week that New Who pioneer Russell T. Davies will take over the reigns once again in 2023 after Chibnall & Whittaker. Davies oversaw both 9th and 10th iterations of the Doctor with Christopher Eccleston and David Tenant as well as helped usher in a world wide rabid fandom of new fans. This news could mean we'll see the series return to form in just a few years time - which will also coincide with the show's 60th anniversary.

In behind the scenes entertainment news, The IATSE is considering a strike for it's members which could impact the industry just as much (if not more) as the writer's strike we witnessed back in 2007-2008. As much as we love our geeky media - we here at The Blurred Nerds stand with Guild members and believe they should be compensated fairly for their work. Actors bring characters to life - but without those who work behind the scenes - we wouldn't have amazing costumes to fawn over, lighting to set the mood and more.

A new Nintendo Direct this week teases upcoming additions to both the gaming system as well their online subscription offerings. Also, Animal Crossing players finally has some promising information about new content being released for their islands besides new items.

And why Y: The Last Man should be added to your watchlist.

All that and more!

On this episode of the Blurred Nerds:

Lil' Bit is returns from Dragon Con and offers some thoughts on the show. After a two year break, was it everything she hoped it would be? Changes were plenty for this year's event and while some things felt the same, others were noticeably different.

We chat about the good, somewhat bad and at times uncomfortable experiences Lil' Bit had this year.

The trailer for Matrix Resurrections has dropped and offers a stunning tease of what's to come to the big screen in December. The movie's official description brings up some interesting tidbits about what we'll possibly see and how it could possibly affect the franchise as a whole.

A new No Way Home set leak seemingly confirms what could be one of the worst kept plot secrets even though all involved are still remaining tight lipped and coy.

All that and much more!

Good news for karate fans and army of witches stans. Netflix renewed Cobra Kai for season 5 before season 4 even premieres so hopefully than means they are seeing some great things in the episodes yet to come Also, Freeform gave a third and final season renewal to Motherland: Fort Salem. Thank goodness too because season 2 just ended on a heck of a season finale.

Activision Blizzard irked Overwatch players this week by announcing a popular in game character would soon be receiving a name change. More changes rumored to be coming soon to World of Warcraft names as well. However, may players suggest Blizzard should be making changes to their real world working conditions instead of deflecting to largely meaningless gestures inside their games.

We spend some time geeking out over the new Spider Man trailer and Tik Tok bans yet another potentially dangerous social media trend & challenge from their platform.

More and more actors are beginning to speak out about the treatment their characters have received in movies and questioning the motives behind it. Perhaps this will be another step into more accurate representation of underserved characters and performers in our genre favorites. Can we just get rid of the tired tropes already?!

And Lil' Bit is a big old ball of stress with only a few more days until she leaves for Dragon Con. She catches us up on some of the big changes the convention is making this year to ensure a safe as possible environment for attendees.

First up this episode, we chat about James Gunn's take on Suicide Squad. There was comedy, gore, good performances and most importantly heart - all the things we look for in a Gunn production. How else would we have gotten a cute kitty in a Polka Man Suit?

Then we move on to some recent celebrity allegations and wonder where our bias clouds our judgement based on what we believe or don't. Does liking a celebrity impact how we handle their potential fall from grace? For example, both Joel Kinnaman and Vincent Kartheiser have recent allegations against them - but we find ourselves taking the side of one of them much quicker than the other.

Titans returns for season 3 on HBO Max and drops 3 episodes at once. The show is heading in a darker direction and it will be interesting to see where we go from here. DC seems to be finally heading in a good direction for their shows albeit with baby steps.

Lower Decks season 2 premiered on Paramount+ and continues to be one of the best recent additions to the adult animation scene. Skewering classic episodes while also showing reverence for the Star Trek Universe at large - plus a Shatner On The Mount reference?! We're gonna need Paramount & CBS to keep renewing this show please (and while we're at it - give us the whole season at once!). That and more on episode 238.
