Earlier this week, Bryant was asked to talk about the differences between bullying and how military drill sergeants use stress to develop confidence, strength, and teamwork.
One of his mentors provided a great answer shown below:
Joe Rod: Here are some of my thoughts on the difference between a drill sergeant (Ds) and a bully.
The bully uses punishment and threat of punishment to intimidate and cause fear in another person. His motive is based hate, and the desire to stroke his/her sick ego. The DS uses discipline (a good thing) to build a young recruit.
The DS has 12 weeks to turn a civilian into a Soldier, Sailor, Airmen or Marine. Not much time to make life changes such as learning to trust and submit to one's leader, learning teamwork to accomplish the mission, and learning basic Soldier skills.
The DS may cause fear in the mind of a new recruit but the motive is not to destroy the person but to change him/her for the better. Most Soldiers don't hate their DS(as they would a bully) but hold him\her in a high degree of respect.
The Soldier will forget the name of their basic training company commander but they will never forget the name of their DS. Proper discipline is the key ingredient to making anyone good at what they do...an athlete, musician, student, etc. Sometimes "good" discipline may require what we might call punishment.
That punishment usually occurs after a recruit due to poor attitude or lack of respect repeatedly fails to submit to the authority of the DS and the discipline has to be ramped up a degree. In today's Army there is no longer any physical contact between a DS and the recruit.
The the key difference between the bully and the DS is motive. One seeks to build up and the other seeks to tear down. Much more could be written on this topic. The Bible says that if parents truly love their children they will discipline them when needed.

Bryant then went on to elaborate on Joe's points and to encourage everyone to develop strength and resilience to overcome the challenges and challenging people we all face in life.
