Quito is one prime example of this with the Statue of The Virgin Mary historically dividing north and south, rich and poor.

Colombias civil war has claimed over 200,000 lives and has lasted over 50 years. In 2016 the largest and most prominent rebel group, (The Farc), signed a peace treaty with Juan Manuel Santos and the Colombian government. However, there are still dissident guerilla groups and resentment on how to integrate the former rebels into society. Not only is the conflict intricate and complex but the peace process has only made things tougher to swallow. Not all rebel factions and paramilitaries have turned in their weapons and with an upcoming election, Colombians couldn't be more uncertain of their future. 

What is the role of media? Has the media evolved simply to be a source of entertainment for those tired and impatient of a political system that has disenfranchised them?

Que Richard McColl. Based in Bogota, Colombia he is a freelance journalist who specializes in conflict resolution. Through his podcast, Colombia Calling, he interviews experts in the travel industry, dealing with security issues and explaining the cultural nuances of this diverse and complex land that is Colombia. Richard has written for the likes of the Daily Beast, BBC online, Wall Street Journal, CNN Traveller, and BBC Radio.

On this episode, Richard breaks down the history of the Colombia Conflict, from the many different players to the many different stories Richard covers in his podcast. We discuss Colombia's potential future with a strong younger generation disconnected from the violence of war. As well as stronger and more in-depth media coverage that Colombians never experienced before.

Bello, Colombia. A city historically dominated by a reverent Christian community. Yet whispers throughout the city insist on a different ancestry, one hidden by 500 years of seclusion. Then, over the past 15 years, something strange began to happen. An Orthodox Jewish community, almost out of thin air, emerged within Bello. Where did this community pop up from?

Insert Juan Carlos Villegas, now Rabbi Elad Villegas, the devout man behind the growing Jewish community. A former evangelical pastor, after a work trip to Israel, he became convinced that Judaism was the true way to God. He immediately renounced his pastor-ship and converted to Judaism. Despite his controversial position, Rabbi Elad doesn't persuade anyone to convert to Judaism, rather, he leads by example.

What then is the connection between Bello and Judaism? Many Sephardic Jews converted to Catholicism during the Spanish Inquisition to hide their identities. They then migrated over to the New World and set up communities under Spain's new colonies (present-day Colombia), losing their original faith in the process. According to the Rabbi, the people of the Antioquia have all the characteristics of the Jewish people, from avoiding a diet with pork to lighting candles on the Sabbath. and he is just helping them rediscover their roots. 

Despite his detractors and controversial past, he has proven himself a true servant of Judaism for his community, Comunidad Judia de Antioquia. With recent acceptance of Israel and the surrounding Jewish communities that once rejected their claims, Rabbi Elad has plans to help the community even further (which we discuss in the show). 

This episode spans the Rabbi's search for identity, the differences between experienced religions, and outlook of the Comunidad Judia de Antioquia.

As the rabbi speaks Spanish and Hebrew, he had a translator speaking for him. We edited the Rabbi out of the episode for the translation. The Appalachian Trail winds 2,189.8 miles from Georgia to Maine and ascends 460,000+ feet over the course of the Trail, the equivalent of summiting Everest 16 times. There are 166,000 trail markers from beginning to end and it takes 250,000 volunteer hours to maintain every year. Thousands of people attempt to hike the entire Trail in one attempt, and that where’s today’s guest comes in.

Colby Wohlleb is a 27-year-old writer who just transplanted to Brooklyn to pursue a career in content creation. He is a former college basketball player, accountant, and manager of a youth basketball organization, Ball By Design. He also left everything behind and thru-hiked the trail over 190 days.

This episode dives into the motivation behind leaving your comfort zone, rolling with the punches, and figuring out a new path. Colby discusses what he’s working on, some of his writing processes, and talks about starting at the ground level of a brand new industry at 27 years old.

From falling head first off a fifteen-foot ledge in the middle of the night to African-style dancing around a fire at a hiker festival, Colby shares the experiences that make the Appalachian Trail the most famous hiking trail in the world, and also the most difficult.

High in the mountains of Costa Rica, there is a shelter and sanctuary for over 900 previously stray dogs, known as Territorio de Zaguates. Lya Battle is the founder of this “Dogtopia,” where the endless drool of delight is matched only by Lya’s heart-warming energy.

Territorio de Zaguates is a 10-acre plot of land for the dogs to live “cage-free and open range.” This nonprofit animal rescue and shelter was founded over 10 years ago by the husband-and-wife team of Alvaro Saumet and Lya Battle to promote spaying and neutering, animal welfare, and respect. It is 100% funded by donations and run by volunteers.

Lya has been featured on Business Insider and National Geographic, and she opens up the animal rescue property on weekends for the public to visit. In private, she is engaged in an uphill battle against the local community and other regulatory entities.

The lead up to this episode was about as good of a day as we could've asked for (video here). The first episode of our Save the Deena Tour – we rode 45 minutes from Heredia through the mountains to see the pups. Lya released them all at one time and they ran down a valley into a ravine towards us, before running up through the mountainside. The volunteers and workers that take care of the animals showed us the value of love that’s possible. Lya gave us a few interviews while playing with the pups before we sat down for the show.

In this episode we focus on animal rescue organizations and animal consciousness, and we learn how Lya’s background led to her love of helping dogs (especially the ugly ones!) Lya walks us through the need for education and how to go about it, what it takes to create cultural shifts, and why some groups don’t approve of what she’s doing. What does she think of PETA and the Yulin Dog Festival? How does she pay for food and care? All that and more in this episode.

The stray animal shelter operates on donations and gifts of all types, you can donate to Lya here and just $36 can pay for an entire dog to be taken care of.

Wil Brown @themadscientist, is the architect behind Иeureal: the first protocol designed to produce a predictive artificial intelligence (AI) architecture for cryptocurrency. He is a Bitcoin activist, Virtual Reality enthusiast, and futurist.

 

Outside of developing the first technology to fuse AI and blockchain technology, Wil has been working as a software engineer for over 20 years. He developed the Mozaex Media Server, which has a market value of over 30 million dollars. He is the organizer of the 400+ member Utah Bitcoin Community meetup, won the top prize at the Million Dollar Texas Bitcoin Conference hackathon, and has been involved in several bitcoin startup projects.

 

He also considers himself an old-school cyberpunk and hopes to eventually merge his consciousness directly with machines. He is currently in the funding phase of a documentary in which he will live completely in Virtual Reality for thirty days.
