June 06, 2017 Episode 32: Dr. Scott Solomon - Are Humans Still Evolving?
Dr. Scott Solomon, @ScottESolomon is an evolutionary biologist, ecologist, science writer, and professor at Rice University. His writing has been featured in Slate, Nautilus, Wired.com, and Business Insider. His most recent book is aptly titled "Future Humans: Inside the Science of Our Continuing Evolution," in which he analyzes and answers the principled question: Are humans still evolving? If evolving, how will humans look in 100,000 years? What role do epigenetics play in modern day diseases? If we colonize Mars, how will the change in gravity and atmosphere affect our biology? Will humans on Mars diverge from those on Earth? These are some of the questions we came into this episode pondering Dr. Solomon takes the bus down a winding and twisting road to help us better understand how evolutionary biology is impacting modern day and future life on this planet. He provides explanation and insight into some of the mechanisms that effect evolution; mate selection, disease, and culture. Don't worry - the bus doesn't stop there. After we breeze past those topics the discussion broadens into some more arcane fields. The bus discusses the effects of bacteria on health and the gut-biome, the potential of virtual reality to evolutionary pressures, CRISPR and genetic sequencing's potential, and whether online dating is messing up natural sexual cues in the search for a mate. This episode was an INCREDIBLE episode all around. The coup de grace is a lasting discussion on the colonization of Mars. Lauren Sesselmann @lsesselmann is a defender for the Canadian national soccer team and plays in the new NWSL (National Woman's Soccer League). She won a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics and a gold medal in the 2011 Pan-America Games at Guadalajara.
Lauren is more than just a hard-working athlete. She is a fitness instructor (just releasing her second Fit as a Pro program), a mentor - focusing on helping younger girl athletes find success in sports, a growing influencer via social media, an actress, and TV host.
Soccer is the most prolific sport around the world and reaching new heights in North America. But woman's soccer, though growing rapidly, is still stuck with a negative stigma in the quality of play. The bus and Lauren challenge this notion while exploring woman's sports science and injury recovery compared to men's (such as ACL tears are greater during menstrual cycles). This episode not only explores Lauren's injuries and experiences as a woman in sports, it also takes a look into her depression and coinciding new confidence and creativity as she approaches retirement. Lauren's passion is mentoring and we also talk about everything from racism and sexism to nutrition, dating, social media, acting, and her side projects. Lauren was one of the most fun people we've had in the studio thus far. She is intelligent, motivational, hard-working, insightful, funny, and has no problem pointing out the bus driver being in love. You're going to absolutely love this show. Mikela Warman is co-founder and VP of Brand Management at 20Something, a digital media hub, and lifestyle brand.

The Bus talks with Zach Weinberg, Head of New Media at Tuff Gong Worldwide - Ziggy Marley's record label. Music is evolving rapidly as social media and new streaming tools converge... and Zach is sitting at the forefront of this evolution. Besides new media, Zach is also one of the historians for the Marley estate and their licenses and works with major industry leaders like Universal Music, WME, and others.

Jared Firestone,@jfireskeleton, is an ex-collegiate track athlete attempting to break into the ranks of the U.S. Skeleton and Bobsled teams. He recently just returned from the U.S. Nationals and is currently preparing for training sessions with the Elite Development Group in Latvia and Norway.

Jared ran track at Tulane and after college, he wasn't willing to give up on his athletic dreams. After watching skeleton one T.V. one day, he took a leap of faith to jump-start his career.

As with many of our guests, Jared has had to show extreme determination, risk, and sacrifice to make the impossible - possible. He has had to forgo his law career and has had difficulty finding a stable job that will support him while he trains. And beyond the potential for failure, skeleton is a dangerous sport. To Jared, the risk is worth the reward.

This episode explores the psyche of a strong-willed and determined young man not willing to accept mediocrity. We also talk skeleton training techniques, the potential of athletes as influencers in the 21st century, and intangibles of success.

Shane Mauss is both a stand-up comedian from rural Wisconsin and a connector. He’s breaking social barriers by bridging the gap between the inner psyche and who we are as human beings.

Shane has been featured on Comedy Central Presents, Conan, and Jimmy Kimmel. He has a Netflix special titled ‘Mating Season’ and a comedy album titled My Big Break, which spent time at #1 on comedy Itunes charts, and which he wrote after breaking both feet. Shane is also the host of the Here We Are Podcast, in which he interviews experts in science and academics to decipher the human experience.
He’s currently embarking on his A Good Trip - A Psychedelic Comedy Tour. In fact, we reached out to Shane because we found his show to be the funniest stand-up we've seen in years... and as psychonauts, directly and perfectly relatable on all fronts. The reason he came up for the tour is just as interesting as the tour itself, and he divulged this in the conversation.
This episodes' first portion plunges deep into the relationship between psychedelics and humanity. We explore Shane's personal experiences (hint: he's not your DMT guru) and their effect on society, as well as augmenting experience through nootropics and biohacking.

Robert Leon (aka Grizzly) & Yume aka Taco (with EmazingLights) are top-level competitors in the Gloving (or Finger xyz) community.
Gloving is a flow art - a term used to describe movement based disciplines such as dancing, juggling, and hooping. The goal is to achieve a present-awareness state know as Flow. Coinciding with the rapid growth in E-Sports and other alternative sports arenas competitions, Gloving has reached new competitive heights with competitors building crews, communities, and even brands. Grizzly (Art in Motion crew) and Taco are in town for the Battle of Florida competition during Miami Music Week (mmw) and the Winter Music Conference (wmc). Griz is a favorite to win but must go through Taco in the first round. This is hands down one of our favorite episodes we've ever done. After learning the technical aspects and scoring of the gloving competitions, we discuss how they prepare to compete (similar techniques to many professional athletes). This episode also talks about the Insomniac banning of gloves from music events helped fuel this form of art and they teach us some basic hand stretches and hand strengthening techniques.
