Russell Nelson is the band director at Butte Central Catholic High School. His band is unlike any other band you will see at a sporting event in Montana.

They are currently playing songs by bands and musicians like the Dropkick Murphys, Ozzie Osborne and Toby Keith. The members are also learning their own love of music from a teacher whose love started at a very young age.

Wes Plate is a Marysville, Washington native with deep family roots in the Mining City. This June 27-28, he is directing the first official Copper Kings 100, a 100-mile running race around Butte. He is doing that as a way to honor this Butte roots.

Longtime Butte High coach Jeff Arntson passed away at 67 two days after Christmas. He will long be remembered as a coach and teacher who did the job for all the right reasons.

Jaison Carriger was a standout athlete at Butte High School. After playing at Utah State, he transferred the University of Montana.

Jaison, though, is known more in Butte these days for bing the Grinch. He and his family host "Grinch Night" every year leading up to Christmas, bringing joy to children and families of Butte and raising money for charities.

He was a four-year varsity athlete in football, basketball and track at Butte High School. He has a Rose Bowl ring from his career playing football for the Oregon Ducks.

Yet, it still seems like Cody Carriger is a little overlooked when it comes to talk about the great athletes in Butte history. That is a shame.

Today, Cody is a police officer in Billings, and that athletic ability that drew Chip Kelly to the 2012 Butte High graduate is still on display if a criminal tries to outrun the law on foot.

Dave Silk was an Olympic speedskater and a World Cup Champion. He was an alternate in the 1984 Winter Olympic Games before competing in the 1988 Olympics.

Soon, however, Dave might not even be the best speedskater in his family. His son, Will, is an Olympic hopeful who graduated from Butte High in June.

He’s an All-American. He is the Big Sky Conference Offensive MVP. He is a finalist for the Walter Payton Award. Bruce Sayler voted him No. 1 for the Heisman Trophy because he can see that Tommy Mellott is the real deal.

My grandma Mary D'Arcy passed away less than two months shy of her 98th birthday on Aug. 20, 2018.

She was smart, funny and active right up until her death. She was planning a huge bash for her 100th birthday. She was going to rent the Civic Center and charge us all $100 to get in.

On April 11, 2018, Ron Davis allowed me to interview Grandma Mary on Partyline. He also gave permission for me to use the audio so we can all hear Grandma Mary's voice again as we get ready for the seventh Christmas without her.
