Dr. Pete Knudsen has been instrumental in putting on the Butte Mineral and Gem Show for decades. He was also instrumental in turning Montana Tech into the great university it is today.

Ed Kelly was a star running back at Butte Central. He played at Montana State and Eastern Montana College, which is now MSU-Billings. He also served in the Army during the Vietnam War, returning home with a Purple Heart.

Paul and Al Cutler are a pair of Butte brothers who helped lead Butte High to State titles on the football field. Then, they ventured out in careers in education, coaching and officiating.

Paul taught and coached in Butte, while Al taught and coached in Deer Lodge. They are also both very good story tellers.

Mick Dennehy rejuvenated the Montana Western football program. He was the offensive coordinator for the 1995 NCAA Division I-AA national champion Montana Grizzlies. He was the head coach of the Grizzlies and Utah State.

Before that, he grew up in the best part of Butte, Centerville. He was a two-year starter in football and basketball at Butte High School. He helped lead the Bulldog football team to the 1967 State championship, and he won the javelin at State as a senior in 1968. Then, he was a standout at safety for the Grizzlies before getting into coaching.

Amy (Ostermiller) Schulte grew up in Shepard, just out side of Billings, where she became a three-time Class B State champion in track. She won the discus as a junior in 2009 before winning the shot put and discus as a senior in 2010.

After marrying Luke Schulte and joining one of Butte's best families, Amy started coaching track at Butte High. She also started a couple of business and founded her "passion project," Graceful Gowns, which makes hundreds of dresses available — and for free — to area high school girls going to dances.

Mark Beckman retired last year after an 18-year run as executive director of the Montana High School Association. In all, he served 25 years at the MHSA and 40 years in education.

He was a fair-and-steady hand leading the MHSA, and he oversaw the addition of high school baseball and girls' high school wrestling. He also guided Montana high school sports through the pandemic and the tornado that ripped the roof off the Billings Metra.

Through it all, though, we always know Beckman as a Butte guy.

Pam Parvinen might not be a household name, but she sure has a story to tell. Pam has undergone kidney dialysis three days per week every week for more than 20 years. In between, she found time to raise a family.

That might not get your name in the newspaper as much as her husband, two-time Butte High state wrestling champion Kevin Parvinen, but Pam is impressive in her own right. For Pam, though, she is just doing what she has always done. She overcomes.
