Hey Cannon Cruisers fans! Randy here! This week, JD and I check out SpaceCamp (1986), directed by Harry Winer and starring Kate Capshaw, Lea Thompson and a young Joaquin Phoenix, then credited as Leaf Phoenix. A group of students training at NASA's Space Camp unexpectedly finds itself launched into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle, turning a summer experience into a very real mission to get home.
JD and I start with the extraordinary timing of SpaceCamp's release only months after the Challenger disaster and how heavily that hung over the film in 1986. Once we get into the movie itself, a lot of the conversation centres on how long it takes to actually reach space and the surprisingly sparse use of John Williams' score. The robot Jinx also gives us plenty to talk about, particularly the rather important role he plays in getting everyone into orbit in the first place.
Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of the Challenger disaster and loss of life.
