This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Topeka, IN, to discuss the case of 17-month-old Alissa Guernsey, a little girl who was placed in the custody of her mother's cousin, Christy Shaffer, while her mother, Kelli Sprunger, tried to get on her feet. After Alissa's father, Michael Guernsey, died in a car crash on I-69 S in DeKalb County, Kelli relapsed into her addictive behaviors. What was supposed to be a short term placement with family members quickly turned into a nightmare for Alissa, who quickly became used as Christy's personal punching bag. After the little girl eventually succumbed to her abusive treatment at the hands of her caregiver, insult was added to injury when Christy wasn't even charged with murder.
