  • Saturday Broadcast 7

    Saturday broadcast, 7/10 - 7/15.

    Key topics:

    ✔️ ICYMI news.
✔️5.7 million unemployed people were not counted in that June Jobs Report that sounded so good but hey: everyone's doin' great! Also: "maybe remote work is not forever." Warned y'all about that.
✔️Meta is telling coasters and slackers to exit. Warned y'all about that, too... trying to game the system and hippity-hop across the market is not a viable recession survival plan IMO.
✔️Man, some of these media outlets are gonna keep pushing that "11 million open jobs, 3.6% unemployment rate" stats til the bitter end. 😣

  • The More "Humane Ways" to Surveil 😒

"Your employees hate being monitored... but here's how you can do it anyway!"

✔️ IMO, if you feel like all of your employees are awful  and won't do anything without your thumb on them, YOU are the problem. Something has seriously gone awry.
✔️ Some locations require disclosures, e.g., if a company is monitoring its employees, they are required to say so. A lot of places do not. If you have employer tech in your home, be careful. Assume at a minimum that your keystrokes and screenshots are being logged. Don't be naïve, people.
✔️ Is there a "humane" way to sit and watch everything your workers do all the time? It certainly doesn't feel very humane to me. It's gross.
✔️ The term "productivity" seems to be thrown around as a way to paper over all sorts of bad behavior. Well, if we're doing these awful things in the name of productivity, then it's all OK.  Is it?

  • Bonus Episode: Interview with a Job Seeker

Labor shortage! Labor shortage! No one wants to work! 🦜

How many times have you heard that? Is it even true? In this special bonus episode, I interview job seeker John Doe (not his real name, obviously) for his perspective.

To protect his privacy, I utilized voice distorting software.

✔️Think ahead. In the event of a layoff, how long would it take to replace your job?
✔️ Is it true that there are two open jobs for every one unemployed person RN? 🤔
✔️ Is anyone moving quickly? It doesn't seem like it!

  • Saturday Broadcast 6

    Saturday broadcast, 7/2 - 7/8.

    Key topics:

    ✔️ ICYMI news.
✔️Jobs are plentiful - 2 for every 1 unemployed person! Gas prices are down! No recession at all! Inflation is transitory! Suuuuurrreeeee. Does your personal economy feel like it's rip-roarin' and doing awesome?
✔️Zuck says if you wanna leave, go right ahead. "Self select" out the door. 😳
✔️Based on the 4th of July sales that I saw, it kinda seems like Big Retail thinks you're either not gonna have much disposable income soon and/or you're not gonna be WFH anymore.

  • Preparation Without Panic

One common question I'm getting is: how to prepare without the panic? How to get ready for a tough economic time without being Chicken Little?

    Key topics:

✔️ Personally, I don't think we're headed into Mad Max or World War Z territory. Some people like to stir up panic because it gets views on YouTube.
✔️ You can find people on social media who'll say anything and everything ranging from toxic positivity to total fear porn. If you can imagine it, it's probably online somewhere!
✔️ Consume the news but do not allow it to consume you. Don't ignore the great things in life and focus on doom & gloom.
✔️ Do you have a household budget set? Do you know your own financial profile? As GI Joe would say: knowing is half the battle.
✔️ If someone wants to judge you for setting a budget and calculating your groceries in the store before you reach the register, oh well. They're not coming home with you and their snotty attitude does not matter.

  • Bonus Episode: Housing Market ➡ Job Market

The pendulum is swinging away from a seller's market to a buyer's market. Honestly, this should come as a surprise to no one. Here's the deal: what do you think is happening in the job market RN?

✔️ Elon kicked the door open and told you, "RTO or leave." Now Zuck is telling you, "Hey, if you wanna quit, it's totally fine by us."
✔️ The CEOs and power brokers know what's coming. They have not been shy in saying so.
✔️ If no one has ever told you that there may be times in life when you gotta work a job you dislike in order to have a salary and benefits, well, wake up up up up up. IMHO, this downturn is gonna really separate the real ones from the social media panderers.

  • Saturday Broadcast 5

    Saturday broadcast, 6/25 - 7/1

    Key topics:

    ✔️ ICYMI news.
✔️Empty shelves, fronting, stores keeping lights off and AC barely on.
✔️A lot of people working side hustles just to make ends meet but hey: everyone's doin' great!
✔️IMHO, I am sus regarding anyone who says the entire job market is still red hot and even the beloved tech sector isn't slowing down. What planet are they on?
✔️Lagging indicators are exactly that. By the time you're "officially" told there's a problem, it's probably too late to do more than react.

  • Job Market Predictions 🔮✨

To be totally clear: this is not advice! This is me opining for your entertainment only.

Several people have asked me offline as well as frequent podcast listeners to make some conjectures on where the job market is headed.

✔️ I don't know. I'm not a power broker or an economist. I have no idea where things are headed and for what length of time. If anyone is telling you they are 100% certain, I would personally be skeptical.
✔️ I would not be surprised to see an influx of people using the gig economy not so much because they want to, but because they feel like they have to in order to make ends meet.
✔️ I would also not be surprised to see an influx of HR/staffing/recruiting folks turning to "coaching" without understanding how saturated that market already is and how insane the industry can be.

  • Quiet Quitting, Part 2

IMHO, it's time to get selfish. Be thinking about what's best for yourself and your family.

    Key topics:

✔️ As I've said before: influencers can leave you broke. If you take questionable advice from someone online, are they going to help you out if you get fired? Nope.
✔️ I would also recommend being strategic and careful about who you're listening to. Someone who's been in recruiting for all of five minutes and who thinks it's a wise idea to ride out a recession by doing the bare minimum is prolly not your friend. Just sayin.
✔️ I had a friend who tried to ride out the dot com bust by surfing the internet at work and doing, well, basically nothing. It was all fun and games until she got fired and had a tough time rebounding from it.
✔️ There's a middle path between hustle culture and total DGAF. You don't have to work 16 hours a day or sell your soul to a company to be productive. Get out of all-or-nothing thinking.
