THE CHAIR (S1/Ep50) — Showing What I was Trying to Hide

Kat and I met in college. She became my little while involved as members of Tri Delta. Our relationship grew from there. I cannot be more happier that our paths continue to cross.

Her Bio:

Katerina is currently the Director of Student Engagement at OneGoal, where she brings a people first, strategic, and creative approach to her work with highschool students who are exploring their life goals and paths. Before this role, she led team operations and diversity and equity initiatives as Director of Operations. Katerina also enjoys mentorship and community leadership, and was part of the first cohort of fellows in the Obama Foundation’s Community Leadership Corps in 2018. 

Beyond work, Katerina loves people- she loves to connect with them and learn about different cultures through experiences and traveling. Being half Puerto Rican, she enjoys speaking and learning Spanish (and other languages) to deepen her ties. Music is another way she connects with people and cultures, with el reggaeton viejo being her favorite musical genre. Traveling to the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico especially, fills her heart and soul, thanks to the vibrant energy and warmth of the people. She also loves to love, whether on herself, her family, or her friends. She enjoys personal growth through working out, therapy, deep convos with friends, and self-help books to keep leveling up. THE CHAIR (S1/Ep49) — The Universe is Vibrating 

Rebecca and I met in graduate school at UCLA. Studying to become teachers. We became fast friends and I fell for her because of conversations surrounding hip hop, teaching art, and our mutual love for the art of drag. I've had the opportunity to see evolutions of Rebecca as the teacher to the coach and now the dancer. It is beautiful to watch someone who finds their joy everyday and nothing gets in the way of that anymore.

Her Bio: 

Rebecca has worked with K-12 students in public elementary schools and non-profit programs in Los Angeles for over 13 years. She earned her Master's Degree in Education as well as her Multiple Subject teaching credential from UCLA, where she taught 5th grade Math and Science in East Los Angeles. She worked as a Program Manager for P.S.ARTS overseeing Teaching Artists in Visual, Music, Theater, and Dance programs in districts across Los Angeles. Her recent work includes Arts Integration coaching for classroom teachers, as well as instructional aide work in Special Education classrooms. She currently oversees curriculum and educator development for Symphonic Jazz Orchestra in Los Angeles. In her free time she enjoys training in various genres of dance including Tap, Hip Hop, and Contemporary.

THE CHAIR (S1/Ep47) — More Than Just Kids in the Classroom

I had the lovely opportunity of teaching Suhaila and Sakina in 8th grade and being a part of their hair journey that same year. They are now 18 years old and freshmen in college. They were very gracious when they said yes as I asked them if they would do me the honor of sitting in THE CHAIR and sharing their stories about their time with me as their history teacher, learnings that transferred over into high school, and their hair journey. 

Suhaila is a freshman at MIT pursuing civil and environmental engineering while Sakina is at Tufts pursuing public health. I am truly honored to have been apart of their stories as much as I am with every student I have the opportunity to encounter. You, the audience, now have the opportunity to listen to the voices of previous students of mine and hear where my passion stems from everyday, with every student as an educator and the founder of THE CHAIR platform dedicated to supporting people on their hair journey.

Michele and I met at a BD101 - 7 day Retreat, which was A Beyond Diversity retreat hosted and led by Niyonu Spann dedicated to bringing together various professionals from all fields dedicated to growing in their mindsets particularly in all aspects of race and racism topics. I was the youngest at the retreat by more than 20 years. I happened to sit next to Michele during many of our full group circle workshops and a connection began to form. I am excited to have her on THE CHAIR.

Michele Robinson Ewing is a retired naval officer with 27 years of distinguished service, who now channels her extensive experience in leadership, people development, and strategic planning into her work as a Holistic Health and Wealth Coach. She specializes in guiding her clients toward physical, emotional, mental, and financial wellness, recognizing the interconnected nature of these aspects of life.

Michele is dedicated to helping her clients achieve financial stability and independence. I had the pleasure of meeting Lorenzo in Atlanta for a 45 minute meeting that turned into a 2 hour dinner. I continue to learn from Lorenzo to this day. Shout out to Cheryl Kiser (S1/Ep 11 & 12) for connecting us.

With a decade of professional experience in behavioral health and founder of The Confess Project—an initiative that trains barbers, beauticians, and frontline workers to become mental health advocates in underserved communities—Lorenzo helps you confess to your issues to begin to build a better process of living.

Lorenzo is a 2024 Clinton Global Initiative Fellow, 2022 Ashoka Fellow, 2020 Roddenberry Foundation Fellow, and 2020 Echoing Green Fellow. He has had the honor of sharing a stage with President Clinton and speaking after His Holiness Pope Francis at the invite-only 2023 Clinton Global Initiative Meeting. 

This year, Lorenzo was named one of Very Well Mind’s ‘Mental Health 25 Champions’ alongside luminaries Taraji P. Henson and Serena Williams. His work has also been featured in countless other media outlets including Oprah Magazine, BET, CNN’s Great Big Story, Revolt on PBS, Black Enterprise, and Huffington Post as well as brands such as Kenneth Cole and the Minnesota Vikings.
