MADE IN SA - Ambani Africa, an Educational technology app that teaches learners their mother-tongue. Electrical engineer by day and future enthusiast by night, Nkululeko Lambani together with his sister Mukundi Lambani are the founders of Ambani Africa a company which was founded in 2018 to offer interactive mother-tongue education for K-12 learners. Starting as a simple idea of addressing the under-representation of South African languages, Ambani developed a free language app that offers six African language options. “Ambani”, which means to speak in Tshivenda, is today a South African EdTech start-up that offers multiple solutions for both private and public sector beneficiaries. African languages and cultures are digitally under- represented.

Lebohang Kganye is a South African visual artist living and working in Johannesburg. Working primarily with photography, Lebohang Kganye incorporates sculpture, performance, installation and film in her creative practice. She is the sixteenth winner of the internationally renowned Foam Paul Huf Award. Last week a jury of five industry specialists chose this year’s winner, out of around 100 nominees selected by 23 nominators from 21 countries. The Foam Paul Huf Award is presented annually to an upcoming photography talent to encourage photographers in their artistic development. Lebohang Kganye will receive a cash prize of € 20,000 and a solo exhibition at Foam Fotografiemuseum in Amsterdam. She will see her name added to an impressive list of alumni. Last year John Edmonds (1989, US) was the winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award. His solo exhibition A Sidelong Glance is currently on show at Foam and can be seen until 19 June 2022. Lebohang is one of three artists representing South Africa in upcoming the Venice Biennale with her work B(l)ack to Fairytales

Routed in traditional African aesthetics, merged with Architectural geometries, each piece narrates a different story which celebrates and expresses the character of the unique individuals who wear them. Pathi is a qualified Architecture who has sought the fashion retail route. She has created her own jewellery brand called InKaturah. She left work to pursue this dream full time. Unlike many brands InKaturah does not buy their products and resell to the market. They design and make everything from scratch themselves. Every piece is unique and it is limited. The brand has been featured by Essentials Magazine and her range has been worn by celebrities such as Lira and other SA celebrities. She has also collaborated with Amarula.

MOYA Consociates With Gregory Maqoma and Vuyani Dance Theatre on the iconic Mandela Stage. With all that is happening in the world, how befitting to take a pause from the chaos and focus on good, but reflective times as Joburg Theatre presents a three night only concert with the incredible creative singer-songwriter and social activist who takes ranks among the world’s finest, Simphiwe Dana. Recognising her immense and distinctive talent, Simphiwe will be creating a new offering, MOYA. In this undertaking, Dana seeks to offer her audience a new experiential journey as she weaves her message through a story being told through the acapella roots of her music and the spiritual call there is in it. Given the magnitude of loss we have suffered in the past two years, a gathering to take stock of our spiritual health is important and Moya endeavours to do that. Moya will be an opportunity to re-centre ourselves and remember the spiritual purpose of life.

In conversation with SA’s one and only water sommelier Candice Jansen

South Africa has exactly one of these professionals and its out guest for this evening, Candice Jansen. Candice received her certification from the Fine Water Society. Just as much as doctors start off as general practitioners and then specialise, Jansen also went on to further train in the US with the Fine Water Academy, run by two of the world’s most (relatively) famous water sommeliers, Michael Mascha and Martin Riese.

This exhibition capture the experience as human, which he describes as fragile.  

Later on this year the Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize which is an award that is aimed at assisting young and emerging visual artists to launch their careers will commence. The Award provides the nominated artist with a twelve-week studio residency in Johannesburg and solo exhibition at the Everard Read Gallery Johannesburg.

Constitution Hill will this year bring the 2022 Human Rights Festival! After two years of a break as a result of the covid 19 Pandemic the only Human Rights Festival in Africa is now back in its full physical form. The festival unites NGOs, social justice organizations, think tanks media partners, and more around human rights issues. Now in its 4th year, the event which is free to the public presents three jam-packed days of conversations, exhibitions; art, film, and live performances.

Mash.T Design Studio creates award-winning furniture, lighting and accessories that celebrate African craft. Founded by designer Thabisa Mjo, the studio brings together technology and traditional crafts to tell uniquely South African stories, using the medium of design.

Over the years, Mash.T’s unique and contemporary design aesthetic has received coveted accolades such as “South African Designer of the Year, 2019” and “Most Beautiful Object in South Africa” for its award-winning, Tutu 2.0 Pendant Light.

Written by Nadia Davids and directed and choreographed by Jay Pather, both artists and academics from the University of Cape Town, it has won numerous awards. Joburg Ballet unveils exciting new works for their brand new season of “Evolve”, which is set to take ballet dance to the next level.

“Evolve” is a celebration of eight new performances at the Joburg Theatre for a limited season, starting on March 25, and it runs till April 3.
