  • November 8, 2021: Chip Franklin - the Infrastructure Bill & capital gains
Chip’s guest is John Nichols, National correspondent for The Nation
While appearing on Bloomberg TV, Chao said that while last week's big jobs report was welcome news, there still aren't enough Americans joining the labor force.
"If you look at the labor participation rate, it is still very low, about 61.6 percent," she said. "We, as a country, have to encourage people to come back to work. What we are seeing in the supply chain crisis is basically the lack of workers. There are not enough people to produce goods and services. That is putting inflationary pressures on our economy, adding to the woes of the supply chain."
She then said that it was time for Americans who don't currently have jobs to suck it up and get to work, even if they had already retired or were staying out of the labor force due to fears about the novel coronavirus.
"We basically have 5 million people now who have left the workforce, and because of COVID, some have retired early, some have decided not to come back," she said. "We are going to need these workers to do their patriotic duty to come back and help the economy."

  • November 8, 2021: Chip Franklin -  One story I get, one story I don’t.
California’s major shops that sell toys and other child care items are already keeping these products, whether advertised to boys or girls, in the same sections unseparated by gender. exp-player-logo Assembly Bill 1084 would require large retail stores with more than 500 employees across the state to “maintain a gender neutral section or area … in which a reasonable selection of the items and toys for children that it sells shall be displayed, regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys.” Long story short, a toy store or big-box retailer should have a toy or child care section that is not demarcated by gender. (For instance, a toy section at a Target that has fire trucks and dolls next to each other is fine, as long as they are not separated as “boys’” or girls’” toys.)
“The University of California Hastings College of the Law Board of Directors voted today to authorize UC Hastings leadership to work with state legislators and other stakeholders to change the College’s name,” the school’s board of directors said in a statement last week. “UC Hastings was founded in 1878 by Serranus Hastings, who perpetrated genocidal acts against Native Californians in the 1850s in the Round and Eden valleys,” it added.

  • November 8, 2021: Chip Franklin - What’s it going to take?
A toddler has died after the vehicle he was traveling in was struck by gunfire on Interstate 880 in downtown Oakland, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Victims of the shooting were traveling in a white Lexus sedan on southbound Interstate 880 near Filbert Street when their vehicle was suddenly struck by gunfire.
The child in the Lexus sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to Oakland Children's Hospital. The CHP said Saturday evening that the child later died from the gunshot wound. CHP detectives are actively investigating Saturday afternoon's shooting. Evidence collected on the northbound lanes of the freeway may indicate the victims were not targeted and the child was struck by a stray bullet.
The boy was sleeping in his car seat when he was shot; additional family members, including two other children, were in the car at the time. The victim was 23-month-old Jasper Wu from Fremont.

  • November 8, 2021: Chip Franklin - John Oliver on PGE
The latest episode of "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" doesn't pull any punches on the role of Pacific Gas & Electric in 2018's deadly Camp Fire in Butte County.
The extended segment on power grids discusses everything from Nikola Tesla to the potential of wind power to the logistical nightmare of extending power lines across the country, but perhaps the most damning criticism of our power system is aimed at the California energy provider.
Oliver asserts that one of the biggest issues with our current power grid is the old age of existing infrastructure. He states that most power lines were built in the 1950s and 60s and have a 50-year life expectancy. Combined with climate change causing more extreme weather events, these aging lines pose a dire threat, Oliver says.

  • November 8, 2021: Chip Franklin - Terry Bradshaw and Aaron Rodgers
"I’ll give Rodgers some advice: It would be nice if he came to the Naval Academy and learns how to be honest," Bradshaw said while on set at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. "Learn not to lie because that’s what you did, Aaron."
Rodgers tested positive for COVID-19 this week. After it was reported he would miss 10 days, per league rules for unvaccinated players, concern for how the Packers enforced safety protocols was raised.
"We are a divided nation politically. We are a divided nation on COVID-19 — whether or not to take the vaccine — and, unfortunately, we got players that pretty much only think about themselves, and I’m extremely disappointed in the actions of Aaron Rodgers," Bradshaw continued.
Rodgers was asked in an interview earlier this year if he's been vaccinated against COVID-19, to which he responded, "Yeah, I've been immunized." But he confirmed this week he hasn't received a COVID-19 vaccine. Instead, Rodgers "received homeopathic treatment from his personal doctor," NFL.com reports.

  • November 8, 2021: Chip Franklin - Tragedies in Houston & Santa Fe
With ABC’s Jason Nathanson.& Washington Post music critic Chris Richards
Who’s responsible for what happened Friday night? Maybe it’s best to start with who isn’t. Before you blame the festival’s audience for being young, remember the deaths that occurred at Altamont back in 1969, then remember the rape and destruction that took place at Woodstock ’99. Before you blame the festival’s music for being rap, remember how 11 young people died in a crush outside of a Who concert in Cincinnati in 1979, then remember how nine people died in the crowd during a Pearl Jam performance in Denmark in 2000. And before you blame the festival’s performers for being too exciting, remember how concert promoters have historically shown a tendency to deflect responsibilities of crowd safety to the musicians on stage’ — like in a recent documentary about Woodstock ’99, in which the event’s promoters suggest that Limp Bizkit’s performance was responsible for sending their ill-fated festival into bedlam.
