Billionaire George Soros has cut investment in US stocks by one-third and acquired a $264 million stake in the world’s biggest bullion producer, Barrick Gold, Bloomberg reports, quoting the investor’s fund data.

Overall, in the first quarter of 2016 the value of publicly disclosed holdings of Soros Fund Management fell by 37 percent to $3.5 billion.

At the same time, Soros bought a 1.7 percent stake in Toronto-based Barrick Gold for $264 million, the biggest US holding in the company.

“Gold is always a safe haven at times when risks for investors are escalating. It’s better to sit out turbulence with gold,” economist Natalya Volchkova told the Ridus news agency.

“Soros is killing two birds with one stone. He leaves to gold, when it is cheaper so that he could profitably get rid of it in future. At the same time, he leaves the more volatile dollar for a more stable asset," she added.

Major power foreign ministers failed to agree a new date to resume Syrian peace talks at a meeting on Tuesday, and the opposition said it would not come back to Geneva negotiations unless conditions improved on the ground.

A pessimistic atmosphere pervaded the meeting in Vienna between countries that support President Bashar al-Assad and his enemies, all of which have committed to reviving a ceasefire and peace process that have been unraveling since last month.

In a joint statement after the meeting attended by the United States, European and Middle East powers that oppose Assad as well as Russia and Iran which support him, the powers called for a full cessation of hostilities and access for aid.

In stronger language than in the past, they warned the warring factions that if they repeatedly broke the truce they risked foregoing the protection of the Feb. 27 cessation of hostilities agreement sponsored by Washington and Moscow.

They also directed the U.N.'s World Food Programme to air drop food, medicine and water to besieged communities starting on June 1 if humanitarian access was denied by either side.

But they did not agree on a date for peace talks to resume. The Geneva talks broke up last month after the opposition delegation quit, accusing the government of ignoring the ceasefire, and recent weeks saw an intensification of fighting, particularly near Aleppo, Syria's largest city before the war.

U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura told a news conference there was still a strong desire to keep the peace process moving.

"We want to keep the momentum. The exact date I am not at the moment revealing it because it will depend also on other facts," he said. He noted that the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which begins in early June, was coming soon.

MEDINA – Orleans Community Health next Wednesday, May 18, will have a “Dangerous Person” drill at Medina Memorial Hospital, preparing staff and law enforcement in case a gunman or somebody else threatens the site.

Hospital officials have been preparing for the drill for several months. It follows an incident on Saturday when a 24-year-old man went to Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport at 5 a.m., demanding drugs. The man said he had guns and a bomb. He was later arrested and charged with first-degree robbery.

Police had the hospital and surrounding neighborhood on lockdown until 10 a.m. Saturday. The suspected guns and bomb were a fake, The Buffalo News reported today.

Wendy Jacobson, CEO and president of Orleans Community Health, said there has been an increase in “drug-seeking behavior” at hospitals, in general.

Medina Memorial and the Urgent Care site in Albion have both bolstered security. Medina Memorial wants staff and law enforcement to be prepared in case a dangerous person is on site.

Johnny Matheney, a civilian who lost his army to cancer in 2008, demonstrated his one-of-a-kind prosthetic. This DARPA prototype is integrated directly onto the bone and uses sensors to pick up nerve signals from the brain to generate movement.

A fireball 10 times brighter than the full moon exploded in the sky of Finland on May 12, 2016.

The disintegrating blue-green ball of fire emitted a powerful and loud boom reported all across southern Finland.

The meteor flew from north to south and was 10 times brighter than the full moon, according to first calculations.

The ‘shockingly gorgeous’ falling space rock was reported more than 100 times all over southern Finland.

The blue-green meteor flew up to 8 seconds before exploding in a loud sonic boom.

This unusually bright object travelled through the Earth’s atmosphere at 16 kilometers per second and disintegrated at about 89 kilometers altitude.

A report published in the Guardian today includes a training document for Facebook editors that outlines how they should curate the "trending" headlines tool.

Instructions in the documents appear to contradict Facebook's earlier denials of a Gizmodo article that said Facebook editors directly inserted headlines into the trending news widget. It also contradicts what Facebook told Recode last summer.

The guidelines obtained by the Guardian additionally show that editors must select trending news topics from headlines its algorithm surfaced, and make sure that they appear on five of a list of 10 "trusted" news sources that include the New York Times, BBC News, CNN and Fox News. This is likely to make people who are upset about alleged anti-conservative bias that Gizmodo reported on even madder; Fox News looks like the only right-wing outlet on the list.

The Guardian notes that the former Facebook editors it spoke to disagreed with the allegations of anti-conservative leanings at Facebook, and that Facebook has since updated its guidelines.

Six plaintiffs filed an $800 million lawsuit (PDF) against former Federal Drug Administration chief Margaret Hamburg and health giant Johnson & Johnson, accusing them of hiding the dangers of the antibiotic Levaquin to increase profits.

There are many unconvincing claims in the lawsuit, but that the lethal effects of the drug were not adequately communicated to physicians is not one of them.

“The pain is almost unbearable in both legs and left shoulder,” a user named Diane wrote on Consumer Affairs in October. “I am now walking with a cane.” Ruptured tendons, which Diane was diagnosed with, are a rare but serious side effect of Levaquin, as are a host of other physical and mental issues.

“I can barely walk,” another named Linda wrote one month ago. “Can’t sit or lay without discomfort.”
