Genesis 29 describes the marriage of Jacob to two sisters (Leah and Rachel). If polygamy wasn't bad enough, Scripture tells us that Jacob loved Rachel but not Leah. This is quite literally the definition of dysfunction. Let's look at this verses together as we identify the elements that created this dysfunctional marriage so that we can avoid the same mistakes.

Jacob's life is about to get a lot more complicated. The liar and manipulator is about to be lied to and manipulated. The end result will be that Jacob has, not one, but TWO wives. While there is much to learn from these verses, they offer an amazing example of the Biblical truth found in Galatians 6:7, "Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap."

In Genesis 27 we learned an important lesson...everyone fails. No one is perfect. However, that leads us to an important question. What do you do AFTER your failure. Do you learn from it and pursue God? Or do you continue to make poor decisions that dishonor God. In Genesis 28:1-9 we see examples of both responses.

Everyone loves a good hero story. We love heroes because they do the right thing. However, we are all fallen, sinful people. Genesis 27 is a great example that there are no heroes. While everyone in this passage fails, their failure reminds us of our need for a true hero. Genesis 27 teaches us some important lessons, but none more important than our need for a Savior.

In Genesis 26, the Lord renews the covenant promises He first made with Abraham with Abraham's son, Isaac. In these verses the Lord reveals His eternal nature as we see that He was with Isaac in the past, the present, and promises to be with Isaac in the future. The same is true for us. God is eternal. He has always been with us, He is with us, and He will forever be with us. Let's look at this encouraging truth today.

We've all heard the saying, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." Children often take after their parents...and for good reason. Parents are the greatest earthly influence in the life of their children. We see a perfect example of this in Genesis 26. As we read this passage, we can't help but notice all the similarities between Isaac and his father Abraham. Let's examine this passage together today as we ask an important question, "What beliefs, traits, and characteristics am I passing on to my children?"

Have you ever said these words..."I'm starving to death!" I'm sure many of us have said these words, but I doubt many of us meant them. We say that when we're hungry. And when we're hungry, sometimes we say things we don't mean. The truth is, we don't always make good decisions when we're hungry. There is no better example of this reality than Genesis 25:27-34. Following the passing of Abraham, we know look to Abraham's son Isaac and Isaac's children. However, it's important to remember that none of these men are the main character of Scripture. The main character of the Bible is God! The whole book is about God and His plan of salvation. We see a great example of this in today's passage. While a lot is going on with Isaac and Rebekah and the future of their two sons, make no mistake, the main character in this passage is God.
