On June 24th, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in a controversial decision that would leave women in large parts of the country without certain rights to abortion healthcare. This year's deadCenter Film Festival showcases a variety of homegrown talent. There are directors who tell stories about teen adventures, explore dark comedy, and document the roots of the state's history. One of the more intriguing entries on this year's schedule is the surrealist coming-of-age drama, The Awkward Stage, a movie about a pre-teen student in a decaying Harrah, Oklahoma school who falls in love with a statue. Sound curious?
In this deadCenter 2023 podcast conversation, the Blood Relative Films directing duo of Jeremy, and Kara Choate, join The Cinematic Schematic to discuss what inspired their sophomore outing.
The Choate duo made a strong first impression at last year's festival with their debut, Tenkiller. The Cinematropolis's Christopher Shultz said, "It's more interested in the slices of life happening in-between its narrative, emphasizing simple small-town happiness and hardship in equal measure."
The Awkward Stage takes an even simpler approach to the plot. It focuses more on the vibes of living in the head of a middle school student during an uncertain period of the pandemic.
Adding to the awkward vibes is the unique setting of the old Harrah High School. The Blood Relative team filmed this movie inside the partially destroyed school mere weeks before it was demolished. Everything from the soundtrack from Smothered to the animations that transition the audience between vignettes serves to remind you of the less flattering moments of the pre-teen years.

The Cinematic Schematic kicks off The Cinematropolis's exclusive deadCenter 2023 Film Festival coverage with a look at Kyle Roberts's return to feature filmmaking, What Rhymes with Reason.
Since The Posthuman Project was released in 2014, Reckless Abandonment Pictures has focused on stop-motion projects, collaborations with Nickelodeon, and short films like The Grave. After nine years, Roberts is finally ready to reveal the fruits of his long-gestating passion project, What Rhymes with Reason, a story about friendship, adventure, and confronting the challenges of mental health amongst teens. The film assembles an impressive young cast including Gattlin Griffith(The Boys), Ricardo Hurtado(Ron's Gone Wrong), and Giselle Torres(Disney's The Villians of the Valley) in an 80s/90s Goonies-style adventure featuring treasure hunts, musical numbers, and an examination of trauma and depression experienced by high schoolers from a Christian perspective.
Roberts, Torres, and the film's composer, Nikolas Thompson, sit down with host Caleb Masters to discuss their approach to making a teen drama that earns the right to be heard by their audience through the film's score and licensed music.

Buckle up, listeners. Today we are once again jump-starting our engines to see if The Fast and Furious franchise can possibly continue to live its life a quarter a mile at a time for the tenth time in Fast X.
Hosts Caleb Masters and Laron Chapman's favorite guilty pleasure franchise featuring Vin Diesel and the Fast family is back, this time with 100% more Jason Mamoa than the previous entry.
After leaving F9: The Fast Saga in the dust with a negative review in 2021, special guest Jason Black from KJYO-FM and Critics Choice Association returns for another ride in the passenger seat along with Chad Parizman, a podcast host/producer and Founder of Ader Communications, joining us in the back seat.
In this entry, the family is confronted by a more cartoonish bad guy, Dante (Jason Momoa), seeking vengeance for the death of his father, Hernan Reyes, the villain from Fast 5.
It wouldn't be a Fast and Furious movie without behind-the-scenes drama to add to the challenge of franchise filmmaking. Justin Lin began production before abruptly resigning not long after production had started. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director had a falling out with Diesel.
Furthermore, Louis Leterrier (The Transporter, The Incredible Hulk) replaced Lin for Fast X and the inevitable next film.
After 22 years, ten films(if you count Los Bandoleros), and a Hobbs and Shaw spinoff, what more is there to say about Dom Toretto and Bryan O'Connor's found family in Fast X?

In this special edition of The Cinematic Schematic, The Cinematropolis co-founders Jacob and Zachary Burns join host and co-founder Caleb Masters to spotlight the most exciting work happening in horror with the executive producer of Skinamarink, Jonathan Barkan.
Meet Jonathan Barkan: Horror Cinema Enthusiast, Writer, Film Acquirer and Distributor, and (most recently)Filmmaker
Currently serving as Head of US Distribution at VMI Worldwide, Jonathan Barkan has had an incredible career working in the horror film genre. Starting with his years as music editor at Bloody-Disgusting.com, he subsequently transitioned into a managing editor role at Dread Central before becoming the editor-in-chief in 2018. In 2019, Barkan took his horror film career in a different direction and jumped into the vice president of acquisitions and distribution role at The Horror Collective.
Fun Fact: While working for The Horror Collective, Barkan discovered our parent entity, Planet Thunder Productions' movie, Shifter. Longtime listeners may recall our in-depth series documenting the making of the time travel body horror film.
Furthermore, Barkan continued his work with filmmakers in horror film acquisitions in his later roles at Mutiny Pictures and Bayview Entertainment. It was through this stint in acquisitions he discovered one of 2023's most noteworthy films to date, Skinamarink.
In today's conversation with Barkan, we talk with him about how he found his way into the business of horror cinema. Next, we cover his secret to discovering and distributing films like Skinamarink. Lastly, we'll get insight into the latest updates on his upcoming directorial debut, Mental Health and Horror: A Documentary. The discussion concludes with a two-minute rapid-fire interview round where Barkan spills his secrets.
