The Collector's Quest

We're talking about Sony's odd, seemingly cheaped out choices for the PS1 Classic and what they probably should be, even if it meant fewer games or an increased price. We're also talking about our recent trip to the Portland Retro Gaming Expo and all the fancy things we got there.

Johnny, Tyler, et al (Stephan) are talking about good and bad horror games, and some which are perhaps surprisingly so! The scary game train keeps on rolling all October and we will use wordplay to suit our purposes of talking about more of them! Don't forget to find us at PRGE in just a few days too!

We're talking about 11 collectible Halloween games that we wanted to talk from Atari to Xbox about including super rare variants, Joe Lieberman's furor over zombies, and the pricey game that Johnny's dog once ate.

Tyler, Johnny, and Stephan are talking about 2018, the year of the mini console. Nintendo, Sega, SNK, Sony, and even whatever form Commodore still exists in are all putting out tons of successful standalone mini consoles full of the games they've been trying to sell digitally for the past decade. So we're going to talk about them!

In this episode Tyler, Johnny, and the returning Stephan Reese are seeing who can build the best video game collection with $1000 in a snake draft format. It's collecting, it's gameplay, it's personal taste, so we're seeing who ends up with the best list in the end. Oh, and it's our 100th episode! Horray!

Tyler and Johnny are talking about wasting money in game collecting. Not just things that have no value, but things we overpay for and getting caught up buying things that we can't ascribe as much value to down the line. If you have objects lining your shelves you wish could just be converted back into the cash you paid for them so you can buy the big thing you really want, let us know if we missed anything.

Johnny and Tyler are answering questions and discussing topics sent in by listeners for the first time. We talk about how to deal in the hobby with friends, family, and forum rivals. We might make this a smaller segment in other shows too, so be sure to find us on Instagram or elsewhere and send us questions or topics to discuss on the show.

Johnny and Tyler are talking about collecting for the original Xbox: What's in the US set, what variants and special editions there are, what's rare, what's pricey, and what we just find interesting about a console with an ever dwindling number of exclusive games, even in 2018!

Also Tyler said he has 768 games in his list when he meant 868. Whoops. The show was updated around 8:14.

We're talking prices today, specifically what the most economical way to approach buying a full set is. In this episode we take a look at 3 sample sets of games (top shelf, uncommon, and super common) and see how well you would have made out putting the same amount of money into each type over the course of 18 months. No guessing and conventional wisdom here. We see clear differences not only between the different sample sets, but between cart only and complete games.

In the first of a new series, Johnny and Tyler are talking about how people collect for the Sega Genesis. We're talking about what's out there, licensed, unlicensed, aftermarket, and otherwise, along with what's expensive, what drives prices, and just an overview in general of collecting the console. Tyler also insists on turning the conversation towards Maniac Mansion and point and click adventures for a while.
