Mutant League Football has been on my personal backlog for years, and with the new NFL season kicking off this week I figured there was no better time to finally see what all you Sega Genesis kids were bragging about. And yep, I get it now. MLF is awesome.

The football itself is fine. Personally I prefer Tecmo Bowl for my retro football fix, but this is adequate. Where Mutant League Football shines is, well, the mutants. Decapitating opponents, bribing (or murdering) refs, and pushing your opponents into outer space are just some the things that set this game apart from other classic football titles. Add in a great playoff mode, the ability to win games by killing too many of the other team's players, and some pretty solid gross out humour, and you have a game that's playable in 2025 as it was in 1993.

My guest this week is the official referee of RTG, Mike The Ref. We had a great time taking some shots at NFL fans while laughing it up over all the insanity that is Mutant League Football. I get why all you Sega kids are so proud of these games now, and I can PROMISE you Mutant League Hockey is getting some airtime at RTG Industries sooner than later.

This week we compare the PS3/Xbox 360 wars to the SNES/Genesis battles of the 90's. Is there any chance we get as second Mario Kart game this generation?? And why am I a Broncos fan??

When you're considered one of the best games in the legendary SNES library, you know you're something special. And Super Metroid is fucking special. Some will argue this isn't just the best game on the SNES, but the best Metroidvania game ever made.

From the atmosphere, to the music, to the controls (minus the wall jumping), Super Metroid doesn't really have a weakness. It's unquestionably one of the biggest NES to SNES leaps ever, and as a listener pointed out, it not only launched the Metroidvania genre, but it still does Metroidvania-ing better than games that came after it. Masterpiece is all that applies here.

My boy Dan from Dissect That Film returns to this week to talk about his favourite game of all time, Super Metroid. The first RTG dedicated to Super Metroid was fun, but the audio was bad, even by our low standards. So we're here to right that wrong and give Samus the episode she deserves.

My favourite thing about this podcast is discovering gems that I missed the first time around, and that's exactly what happened this week with Metal Slug 3. This is absolutely one of the best run 'n gun games I've ever played.

It's an arcade game, and it took me a little while to wrap my head around the idea that I was gonna die. A lot. But once I got over my fear of death I found myself lost in this game's charm, silly smooth graphics, and hella fun gameplay. This was my first Metal Slug, but it won't be my last.

My guest this week is a living legend in the world of RTG, my pal Chris. He has been bugging me since episode 1 to cover Metal Slug 3, and I finally get why. We had a scare this afternoon where we thought we had lost the review audio, but everything wrapped up in a neat little PACKAGE and I can't wait for you to let us convince you to play this game.

Good wrestling games are awesome, and bad wrestling games are hilarious. But what about a game that isn't bad, but isn't good? It's just kinda, there? That's how I'd describe WCW Mayhem.

The glory days of WCW were long gone by the time Mayhem dropped. THQ was taking their Revenge engine and turning it into WWF WrestleMania 2000, and EA picked up the bony remains of World Championship Wrestling to make a new wrestling game. The end result was Mayhem, a competent wrestling game with little replay value and a barebones career mode.

I'm rolling solo this week, and while I still had fun playing WCW Mayhem, it made for a tricky review because there just isn't a lot of meat on the bone. But between the engine, ranting about Hulk Hogan, comparing it to other games from that era, and reminiscing about WCW as a whole, I managed to pry a 3-star match out of our game this week.

Gotta tell ya, I didn't know Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was so popular. I played it for the first time the month and thought I liked it enough, but some of you worship it like Special K!

If you never played it back in '99, Soul Reaver is a little Zelda-ish. Some action, some puzzle solving, a dash of metroidvania. You play as a dude that got killed and is brought back for revenge, and you regularly swap between the physical and spirit realms to solve puzzles and kick ass. It's a little cryptic and confusing at times, and it definitely has a PSOne camera, but I liked it.

My buddy Daniel just finished his first run through Soul Reaver as well, so he gave me an early morning call to talk about it. We both gave it decent scores, but I feel like we were a little harder on it than I expected it be. Have a listen and see what you think, why dontcha?

I've really warmed up to Kirby over the years. As a kid I found Dream Land too easy and it scarred me, but as I've gotten older I've grown to appreciate the simplicity that is a Kirby game. And while it isn't his best work, Kirby's Dream Land 2 is a beautiful walk through a puke-green park.

Dream Land 2 takes everything the OG Dream Land game did and makes it better. Animal sidekicks with more power abilities. Way more levels. Save files. Optional collectibles. This game isn't making my top 10 of all-time list or anything, but for a Game Boy game, it's pretty damned ambitious.

Our resident Game Boy junkie, Patrick, is my guest this week. While we both agreed that Dream Land 2 did a lot to build on the base of the first game, we found ourselves ranking the two in different orders. Honestly, I think we were both a little harder on this game than we intended to be, but we righted through ship with some solid scores at the end.

I've been a card-carrying member of the 'Mario Fan Boy' club for over 30 years now, and I know most of his games like the back of my hand. But Super Mario 3D Land is one that slips through my memory cracks a lot, and dare I say, for a Mario game I think it's actually a little underrated...

It doesn't really do anything new or special, but it's a rock-solid 3D platformer, it brings back classic tunes and power-ups from previous Mario games, and while I think it's a little bit of a tech demo for the 3DS's 3D features, the fact remains that it's got that same level of polish most of my favourite plumber's games have.

Pending RTG Hall of Famer Mark McCue is my guest this week, and while he has a stronger attachment to 3D Land than I do, I think I actually like it a little more than he does. At the end of the day it's me and Mark talking about a Mario game and sprinkling in some comedy stories. After 340 episodes of this show, you know what you're getting.
