After getting a taste of Latino living during her university placement in both Brazil and Mexico, Jenna Abaakouk decided to come back for more.
So just over 12 months ago she packed her bags for Colombia to take up a teacher's assistant role with the British Council.
In a wide-ranging chat, Jenna tells us how her first year here involved lots of trips, but not of the kind she was hoping for. These have given her an insight into the more impressive elements of the country's health service, with an amount of guilt albeit.
And while she came here to work in education, she's found herself gravitating towards journalism. She's got The Colombia Cast vote for that, for what it's worth (eh, not a lot!).

Colombia's archipelago department of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, some 750 km off the country's coast in the Caribbean Sea, is home to the English-speaking Raizals, a Protestant Afro-Caribbean ethnic group.
In recent years these islands have seen a big increase in the number of mainland settlers.
For many local Raizals this, coupled with Colombian policy, has precipitated the steady erosion of their culture.
Here we speak with a San Andrés-based Raizal to get an overview of his people's history, their current problems with Colombian officialdom and their hopes for the future.

  • InterNations in Bogotá

In this regard, he says, it is value for money.
We also hear about Karl's involvement with Niñas de Luz, a foundation helping to improve the lot for girls from Bogotá's Ciudad Bolívar

  • The 'cool' side to Cartagena
    **********
Most tourists visiting Colombia ensure a trip to Cartagena is part of their itinerary.
Even when the majority of the country was viewed as being "off-limits" to tourism, the city was attracting visitors from near and far.
In this regard, it could be seen as the original cosmopolitan city of Colombia, with a healthy mix of local and foreign influences, especially in terms of gastronomy. One innovative venture adding to this is Mr Cool Nitrogen Gelato.
Here we speak to its joint-founder, Irish-born Sinéad Byrne, to find out what makes Mr Cool unique in the ice-cream business.
She also tells us that while Cartagena is one of Colombia's most expensive locations, there are justifiable, obvious reasons for that (and there is value to be found if you know where to look!)
