  • "Toitico bien empacao" with Katie James
    *****
With Facebook and YouTube views numbering 2.8 million and over 250,000 respectively, Katie James' new single, Toitico Bien Empacao, has certainly struck a chord (pun intended!) with many Colombians, from all walks of life. And it's all been done without the assistance of J. Balvin!
Here she explains how growing up on an (almost!) fully-sustainable farm in rural Colombia was a big inspiration for the song.
Born in the Republic of Ireland to an English mother but having moved to Colombia at just two years of age, she also tells us that the recent time she spent in Europe has made her realise how more Latina she is than European.
And for her rapidly growing fan base, the good news is that a nationwide tour is on the cards. Watch this space!

  • Teaching English in Colombia

A significant number of foreigners who come to Colombia do so to teach English. Or at least end up doing that even if it wasn't the initial plan!
One man who knows this scene here better than most is Irishman Cormac Ross. Owner of the language institute Study Agency, he has been teaching in the country for almost thirty years.
In this episode, he tells us (in his own unique way!) that while it's preferable to have all the proper qualifications to teach English, a positive attitude, good personality and knowing what you're doing can get you far. If you're going it alone here, being able to negotiate and not selling yourself short is also a big advantage.
As for the perpetual debate of native-speaking teachers versus non-native, he explains that it's simply a case of the market dictating what it wants.

  • EP 31 Colombians abroad: London calling
    *********
For many Colombians who get the opportunity to live in a more "developed" country, it's often a one-way ticket, save for the odd trip back home to visit family and friends.
However, after three years living in London, husband and wife Oscar Aguilar and Daniela Mariño returned to Bogotá to start their professional careers, as well as a family (even if young Matías was conceived in the English capital!). Colombia, as we'll hear, also offered the prospect of a better diet after getting too used to the London pub culture and its rich food!
While returning home was part of the terms of Oscar's PhD scholarship and he is quite happy to be back, Daniela hasn't ruled out another period living abroad. She just has to convince Oscar of the benefits in doing so!

  • EP30 The Festivo Republic of Colombia
Colombia comes with a reputation, as many locals like to tell us themselves, for being a country laden with public holidays.
Fair enough, with 18 it is one of the global 'leaders' in this regard.
However, as our guest for this episode, our, um, 'festivo expert' Luis Silva tells us, giving this high holiday number as a reason for a perceived laidbackness when it comes to work is wide of the mark.
That being said, Luis has a fondness for midweek holidays as it usually means a more relaxed working week is in store!
What's more, as we'll discover, if you had the time and money you could travel to a different town each week of the year and find a local festival in full swing. Now there's a podcast theme!
    ********

  • EP29 Bogotá's Gourmet Burger: A meaty issue
    ***********
'Colombia, being something of a raw capitalist country, is in many ways more geared towards independent workers and entrepreneurs than for working as an employee.'
That's the view of Australian-born (and Conor McGregor lookalike!) Darren Crockett, our guest for this episode. A construction worker in his native land, he spent a few years in Germany working in various fields where he met his now Colombian wife. The couple moved to Bogotá in 2016 where they set up Gourmet Burger Bar.
Darren tells us how he went from laying bricks in Australia to grilling quality, artisanal burgers in Bogotá and why he feels he's now found his niche.

  • EP 28 The Colombian au pair

    ********
For a number of young Colombian women a stint working as an au pair, especially in the US, is a popular option to sample life abroad whilst earning a living and improving their English.
Eliana Usuga did just that back in 2013. Here she recounts her experience, from a scheming grandmother to a "slave-driving" host mother. She is quick to add, though, that she wasn't like Consuela from Family Guy and her au pair life had more positives than negatives. We believe her, just about!

    ***********
Launched as a somewhat niche event back in 1995, Bogotá's Rock al Parque has grown into one of the most important rock festivals in Latin America.
This year it celebrates its 25th edition and organisers are expecting anything up to 200,000 revellers (mild-mannered ones, that is, as we'll hear!) to visit over the three days of concerts.
One of those organisers is Irishman (there's always one!) Gareth Gordon and here he gives us the rundown on all that's planned for this year's renewal.
He may have even convinced Brendan, not exactly a keen rocker, to check it out!

  • EP 26 Murdered in the Darién Gap

    ********

Colombia has many beautiful, off-the-beaten-track places to visit. Some of these, however, are in areas largely controlled by non-state authorities, bandit country if you will.
While the number of such zones appears to be decreasing, the Darién Gap, a human trafficking and drug smuggling hotspot spanning the Colombia-Panama border, is still notorious in this regard. Attempting to trek through it overland is an extremely risky pursuit, as young Swedish adventurer Jan Philip Braunisch was to fatally find out in 2013. NGO worker and journalist Steve Hide was involved in the recovery of Jan Philip's body from the Farc guerrillas who murdered him. Here Steve gives us the background to this tragic story.

  • EP 25 LGBTI life in Colombia

    ******
Colombia may not always be seen as progressive but its LGBTI scene is up there with the best of them. Well, that's the view of our guest for this episode in any case, Jymmy "Boots" Arboleda.
Be that as it may, the Medellín-born Bogotá resident says that, in some ways, the gay scene was more fun when it was a little more underground.
Jymmy also tells Brendan that there's much more to gay nightlife in Bogotá than the famous Theatron club; our host just needs to drag himself out of his beloved barrios to see it!

    **********
When it comes to beer drinking in Colombia, variety has traditionally been sorely lacking. However, in recent years there has been a steady growth in the number of craft beer operators, especially in Bogotá.
The Colombia Cast favourite and self-proclaimed "pisshead" (he's not really!) Oli Pritchard gives us the low-down on this "fancy" new world of craft beer in the city.
Oli does his best to convince Brendan to change his "quantity over quality" outlook. Easier said than done, that!
