“Learn not the way of the nations,” Jeremiah 10:1 says, “for the customs of the people are vanity.” We don’t hear the word vanity much in common culture today. The word vain, hebel, means empty, unsatisfactory. Certainly, we have all met people who typify this adjective, whose appearance may be radiant but whose minds are vacant. The customs of the people means here their manner, their statute, their ordinance. The vacant minded not only model their own mental vacancy and disconnect from logical, critical thinking; they expect others to bow to their ordinances, their statutes. 

This is not the intended path of the Christian. Believers are to walk in the ancient path, the eternal highway. Philippians 3:13 says that we are to walk by the same rule and mind (pay attention to) the same thing. Galatians 5:25 says that we are to walk in the spirit. We must pay careful attention today to any “ways of the nations” that may be trying to encroach on our beliefs or behaviors. Instead, we must resist the customs and vanities of this world and keep our eye focused on the prize of the high calling that propels us onward.

There are many powerful reasons for breaking free of the toxic teachings of traditional education. And it's not only about the overtly soul-less content found in the public system. As Ken Ham has pointed out, many of today's Christian schools are also failing to produce thinkers, doers, disciples. More often than not, according to Ham's research, Christian schools have simply mirrored the methodologies and ideologies of the secular system. They walk like a public school, talk like a public school, and think like a public school. They’re like a secular textbook with an “I Heart Jesus” bumper sticker slapped on the front cover.  And why? Because most of the teachers went to secular institutions and are simply parroting the information and methodology they absorbed in their own humanistic classrooms. Instead of creating a spirit of wonder and gratitude--two emotions that should fuel the transformative experience of learning--modern classrooms are stifling creativity and impeding the Great Commission. As Neil Postman puts it, education and school have become mutually exclusive. If we want to positively influence the trajectory of today's students, it’s time to take back the reins. The next generation needs active, engaged mothers and fathers to lead them to greatness. The future is family. As a nation, we have wasted an extraordinary amount of time and resources in the public sector trying to fix a broken system. As John Taylor Gatto says, "Over the years of wrestling with the obstacles that stand between child and education, I have come to believe that government monopoly schools are structurally unreformable. They cannot function if their central myths are exposed and abandoned." A better question would be how can we rescue parents who want out of government indoctrination centers but feel trapped? What responsibility can the local church take to help parents who believe they are unable to homeschool? How can we sponsor them, support them, come alongside them, and make what seems impossible possible for them? What can we do, individually and corporately, to help free the captives?
