This time Jeff Goldblum takes on what is apparently his favorite role: himself! PITTSBURGH is a mockumentary about Jeff Goldblum and some friends (Ed Begley, Jr. and Illeana Douglas) starring in a two week run of The Music Man at a regional theater in Pittsburgh. It's surprisingly fun and silly, and clocks in at a perfect 80 minutes.
We also have a quick aside about the 9 minute short film directed by Illeana Douglass called "Supermarket of the Stars" that features Goldblum and can be found on youtube!
Now THIS is an interesting one - Back in the '90s, filmmaker Hal Hartley made a movie called HENRY FOOL, a dark comedy-drama about a garbageman who becomes a famous poet. And in 2007, he returned to the characters from that movie... and placed them in a twisty, espionage-filled spy thriller! We're talking FAY GRIM this week, which features Jeff Goldblum as a shifty CIA Agent who may or may not have his own agenda going on here. (Note: HIGHLY recommend watching the original movie first, because this movie will be very difficult to understand if you don't.)
Back in the '80s, Jeff Goldblum tried his hand at leading his own TV show with TENSPEED AND BROWN SHOE. The show was short-lived and it would take more than two decades before Goldblum would lead his own series again... and this one would also prove to be short-lived. Goldblum stars at the title character on RAINES, a police procedural with a supernatural twist that aired on NBC in the spring of 2007. The show was created by Graham Yost, who went on to create JUSTIFIED, and the pilot - which is what we're discussing today - was directed by Frank Darabont. (And fun fact: though it may have been cancelled, Goldblum credits this show with getting him his role on LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT a couple years later!)
Jeff Goldblum pops up for a couple of minutes as a shady executive in this Robin Williams... comedy? The jury's still out on that one - MAN OF THE YEAR is a political satire, a romance, a thriller - and not particularly great at any of those things. We dig into why the premise of a TV personality running for president is sort of weird to watch in hindsight (three guesses why)!
On the latest episode, the Mikes are of two minds about this one - is it a grossly good time or is it just gross? What we do know is that it's got a pretty great cast - Jeff Goldblum (obviously), Alec Baldwin, Carrie-Anne Moss, Luke Wilson, all led by a compelling performance from a pre-TWILIGHT Nikki Reed. It's time to talk about 2006's MINI'S FIRST TIME!
We need to take another break from Goldblum to get back in the Cage - because Nicolas Cage has another new movie out! Hot off the success of PIG, Cage is back, this time collaborating with director Sion Sono (in his English language debut) for PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND! Cage says this is "the wildest movie" he's ever made. Do we agree? Is it even a movie? Let's talk about it!
Jeff Goldblum appears in this indie that sat on the shelf for a couple of years after it first premiered - which is a shame, because it's a surprisingly solid directorial debut from Scott Caan! Starring Goldblum, Caan, Shawn Hatosy, and Kelly Lynch (with a few early appearances from actors like Selma Blair, Isla Fisher, and Freddy Rodriguez) - this is DALLAS 362!
Today we talk about the first of many collaborations between Jeff Goldblum and director Wes Anderson! Goldblum features in a small but pivotal role as Alistair Hennessey, the lifelong rival of Bill Murray's titular Steve Zissou.
We're joined by longtime friend of the show and frequent guest on Mike and Mike Go To The Movies, Nick Wermuth (@DownyPlusUltra)!
Jeff Goldblum makes a brief appearance in this mockumentary featuring a collaboration for the ages - Werner Herzog (AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD) and Zak Penn (READY PLAYER ONE)! There's not a lot of Goldblum here, but this was a fun discovery!
Jeff Goldblum, Anthony LaPaglia, and Liev Schreiber star together as three American political consultants who are brought over to Russia to assist with the re-election of Boris Yeltsin - it's SPINNING BORIS! A solid political satire based on true events, that offers a surprising glimpse of how the world got to where it is today.
