This week, it's a pretty obscure one - Jeff Goldblum and Lake Bell star in this failed pilot that ended up airing as its own movie on NBC! It's a tough one to track down but we managed to do it - this one is called WAR STORIES, a solid (and surprisingly progressive...ish) post-9/11 drama in which Goldblum and Bell play journalists in war-torn Uzbekistan.
We're getting back into the cage this week - Nicolas Cage is getting rave reviews for his latest movie, the subversive revenge thriller, PIG. Not the movie many will expect it to be, and a surprise contender to be considered one of the best movies of the year. It's sort of unbelievable how good this movie is. Cage co-stars with Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin in this feature debut from Michael Sarnoski!
On the latest episode, Mike and Mike talk Goldblum's cameo in RUN RONNIE RUN, the feature film based on the beloved series Mr. Show with Bob and David. In the process, they dive into the history of Mr. Show, what made it a landmark in sketch comedy, all the various careers it launched, and try to figure out where things went wrong with the movie. Y'all are brutalizin' this podcast if you don't listen to it!
Goldblum gets to be his sleaziest as he portrays D.H. Barnes, the godfather to a rich kid who runs off on his own. That kid is Igby, played by Kieran Culkin in his breakout role. Taking inspiration from early Wes Anderson movies and a J.D. Salinger book (guess which one), this is a solid independent comedy-drama with a killer cast that also includes Bill Pullman, Claire Danes, Amanda Peet, Jared Harris, Susan Sarandon, and Ryan Phillippe. It's time to talk IGBY GOES DOWN!
Fun fact: literally every kid who was around in 2001 saw the movie CATS & DOGS. And it feels like very few people today actually remember all that much about it. We certainly didn't - but now, after just having passed its 20th anniversary, we're ready to talk Jeff Goldblum, super-spies, Ninja Cats, an MVP performance from Sean Hayes, terrifying CGI, impressive puppetry, pies in the face, and more! It's dogs and cats, fighting each other - MASS HYSTERIA!
Jeff Goldblum stars as Herbert Biberman, who is... one of the Hollywood Ten! It's the infamous period of Hollywood that involved the HUAC hearings, the blacklist, and the making of a movie that the FBI did not want people to see, 1954's SALT OF THE EARTH. It's all here in this surprisingly solid biopic, ONE OF THE HOLLYWOOD TEN!
This one was marketed as BEYOND SUSPICION when it first aired on Cinemax, which implies it's more of a thriller than it actually is. The movie is also known as AUGGIE ROSE, which actually does describe the movie a little bit more - Goldblum plays a guy who slowly starts to take over another man's life. That man? His name's Auggie Rose. See, it's all coming into place. Anne Heche and a pre-Deadwood Timothy Olyphant co-star in this one!
Jeff Goldblum joins a massive ensemble cast that includes Leslie Mann, Rita Wilson, Jared Harris, Paul Sorvino, Michelle Williams and a LOT more in this independent drama depicting a week in the life of the fashion and modeling industry. And did we mention that all of the dialogue is supposedly entirely improvised by the actors? It's time to talk 2001's PERFUME!
And we're back! Our deep dive into the films of Jeff Goldblum continues as we enter the 2000s with a movie that takes us into the world of poorly-received Tarantino knockoffs. But wait... what if it's actually pretty solid? Goldblum is part of a wild cast that includes Steve Zahn, David Cross, Elijah Wood, Salma Hayek, Tom Wilkinson, Lara Flynn Boyle and more!
It's our last Cage Catchup episode for this mini-season, and we're going out with a bang. Nicolas Cage plays a silent drifter in this comedy-horror riff on Five Night's at Freddy's, and he's not locked in there with them... they're locked in there with him! Actor Vin Craig (SHOPLIFTERS OF THE WORLD, THE DEAD DON'T DIE) joins us to talk Nicolas Cage's incredible performance in WILLY'S WONDERLAND!
