The Conspirators Podcast

Lighthouses have been around in one shape or another for thousands of years. Over the centuries, several lighthouses have been the locations of many great tragedies and great mysteries. Listen as I tell you about some of these tragedies, of the ghosts that allegedly haunt some of these lighthouses, and of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in history.

The idea that some crimes are punishable by death is something that appears in legal systems dating back at least as far as the ancient Babylonian Code of Hammurabi. But the death penalty isn’t always fair, and often times throughout history, tragic and horrible mistakes have been made. Listen to the stories of some executions gone wrong, of two men who apparently couldn’t be hanged, and what happens when an innocent man is put to death.

In this episode I tell you about the lives, and deaths of two of the most famous artists who ever lived. Canada’s Tom Thomson and Vincent Van Gogh have a lot in common. They both started painting late in life, they both struggled financially while they were alive, and there’s evidence that both men may have been murdered.

We all know the story of the sinking of the Titanic, but the early 20th century also saw several other equally tragic maritime disasters that are almost forgotten to history. In this episode I tell you the stories of the capsized S.S. Eastland, and of the tragic fire that swept through the cruise ship the Morro Castle. The story of the Morro Castle is especially disturbing because much of the evidence points to the fire being deliberately set by one man.

Teleportation is a concept that has been around a long time. All the way from the Bible up to the modern day, stories exist of people who mysteriously vanished and reappeared far away. Hear the story of an unusual Spanish nun who managed to perform missionary work half a world away, of a prison inmate who could walk through walls, and of a college student whose disappearance has to be heard to be believed.

For my 100th episode, I take a step back and return to a subject I talked a bit about in my very first episode. This is the story of Karen Silkwood, a nuclear energy activist who in 1974 died in a single car accident on a lonely stretch of Oklahoma highway. But was it an accident? Or was Karen murdered to keep her quiet about what she knew?

In 1931, a young woman named Thalia Massie claimed to police that a group of native islanders from Hawaii brutally kidnapped and assaulted her. The fallout from her claims would spark off decades of racial tensions between the natives and the white ruling class in Hawaii. What followed was a sordid tale of sex, racism, revenge and murder. It's a story that threatened to destroy all of tranquil Hawaiian society.
