The Corner Blitz

Tonight on The Corner Blitz, we're joined by the MAIS 2A Baseball State Champions, the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams. Head Coach Kyle White rides all the way to Fit Life from Woodville and brings three of his heavy hitters, seniors Jack Orgeron and Gavin Davis, and junior pitcher Jacob Sessions. We talk about long roadtrips in MAIS 2A, winning the title the week before you win the title, senior trips to Sin City, how track and field is a second-tier sport, and of course we get romantic about baseball. Benji, the Brads and Adam also discuss how agents and contracts are the new normal in the NIL world (even though agents used to be immediate career-enders for college athletes); the sheer, raw genius of Florida Gators athletics in offering a multi-million-dollar NIL deal to Jaden Rashada and then basically saying PSYCH; and how ever SEC baseball coach is on the "hot seat" all the time.

This week we get outside the friendly confines of Fit Life and broadcast on location at Southwest Mississippi Community College for a high school football spring scrimmage. Amite County coach Jeffery Gibson faces off against his little brother, Don Gibson, and the Port Allen Pelicans. We talk to both afterward. We also catch up with North Pike coach Matt Mock before his spring test against the South Pike Eagles. Also Cliff Collins, SMCC head coach, teaches us how to run a bangin' concession stand. The Corner Blitz crew also discuss how the NCAA deserves its impending bankruptcy, how LSU is too poor to buy interior linemen out of the transfer portal, and we celebrate/mourn the end of the softball and baseball season.

This week we're joined by Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolfpack Basketball Coach Britta Stephens, who reflects on her not-quite-one-year on the job with the She Wolves, recruiting and performing at the juco level and how it's important to have assistant coaches who can choose restaurants at which to stop on road trips. We also talk to North Pike Athletics Director Kevin Martin about what it takes to run a slate of athletics programs at the 5A level and how much math it takes to hire/promote eight coaches in the span of two months. Benji, Adam and the two Brads also discuss the validity of a coin toss as an NFL draft strategy, how you can win 35 games and still be in the middle of the pack in SEC baseball, and the beauty and glory of a press box that has a bathroom.

This week on The Corner Blitz we have our annual sit-down with Brookhaven High School Tennis Coach Becky Green as she tallies up yet another line on her state champion spreadsheet. This time it's two pairs of doubles winners - Allie Grace McNeil (SR), Annie Stewart (8th), Caroline Kilpatrick (JR) and Cohen Leggett (FR). That was Caroline's THIRD state championship in tennis. To close the program we had a talk that was way more fun than we thought it would be - Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Black Bear Program Manager Anthony Ballard, who told us everything we needed to know about the species in Mississippi with not one word about black panthers (thank God). We also discussed the brutality of playoff softball and baseball, estimated how long it would take the University of Alabama's college board to close the UAB football program again if they went on strike (light speed) and, once again, shared our disillusionment at the trajectory of college football.

This week on The Corner Blitz, longtime North Pike Lady Jags Softball Coach Sonya Wallace comes back on the show, and with her is a senior Lady Jag hitting .415 and committed to Copiah-Lincoln, Emilie Williams. They talk about the grind of scheduling a dozen 7A schools during the regular season and how being in knife fights all year gets you ready for the playoffs. Bradley, Brad and Adam also discuss Caitlin Clark's bank account, how the Chinese olympic program just can't stop shootin' up and how college football is now a law class instead of a sport.

On this week's show we catch up with the three-time Lincoln County/Region winners in tennis - the Bogue Chitto Bobcats. Coach Chase Wallace joins us on his last ride before ascending into heaven (becoming assistant principal in the Sartin Administration) along with seniors Jax Leggett, Gage Smith, Colten Kimble and Andrew Merrell. The CB crew also talks about the wildlife department's face-plant at the 2024 archery state championships, breaking into the concession stand at the Wesson ballfield and a hoped-for explosion of interest in Caitlin Clark's WNBA.

On the April 10, 2024 Corner Blitz, Southwest Bears Baseball Coach Jack Edmondson and Co-Lin Wolfpack Baseball Coach Adam Chamblee prepare for the renewal of the Coca-Cola Classic rivalry, and they do so with 45 minutes of bromance. Southwest Athletic Director Ken Jackson also comes on the show to reveal the school will add women's volleyball to the athletics lineup in 2025. We also talk about transferring, already being bored with the college football super league and how Mississippi State is the most fightin'est-ass team in the SEC.

The Corner Blitz checks in with the winngest high school softball team in Southwest Mississippi thus far: the 14-2 Wesson Lady Cobras. We talk with coach Michelle Nunnery, Longwood University pitcher commit Mallory Sanders and the field marshal behind home plate, catcher Julianna Wilson. Adam and the Two Brads also discuss Caitlin Clark on 12 million televisions, pulling the tape on the gym floor at the women's tournament and how the MHSAA enforces rules that don't actually exist only on certain sports and only if somebody tattles.

Enterprise Attendance Center Archery Coach Lauren Jordan, assistant coach Nicole Lawrence and a handful of the team's top archers join The Corner Blitz to celebrate last week's AIMS High School 1A South State Championship and look ahead to the state finals, April 8-12. We also recap the 20-win basketball season with Southwest MS Community College women's coach Brent Harris.
