This week we continue our study of Melchizedek, King of Salem. Melchizedek is counted in the Bible, Hebrews 7:3, as one, "Without father or mother or genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God, he remains a priest for all time."  Melchizedek lived and taught on earth for 94 years. Urantia Papers 93-98 are devoted to Melchizedek with Papers 96 and 97 treating the Hebrew religion's evolution--the world religion most heavily influenced, at least initiated, by his teachings. The Urantia Book states that Melchizedek's visitation is a significan revelation of the truth for humanity. In our study, we've learned that Melchizedek came to earth on an emergency mission to rekindle the light of truth on earth. He thoroughly trained messengers and dispatched them to the four corners of earth from Salem, now Jerusalem. These extraordinary papers examine how his teachings spread to influence and create nearly every major religion on earth. They effectively recount the profound effect Melchizedek had on our world. We will continue our study of Paper 94, with Section 12: The God Concept of Buddhism. UB 94:12.4.The great strength of Buddhism is that its adherents are free to choose truth from all religions; such freedom of choice has seldom characterized a Urantian faith. 95:1.3.Although the Salem teachers did much to refine and uplift the religions of Mesopotamia, they did not succeed in bringing the various peoples to the permanent recognition of one God. We hope to finish Paper 94 this week and continue on with Paper 95. The Melchizedek Teachings in the Levant, which further explores the spread of Melchizedek's teachings in Mesopotamia. We will continue to follow this with a study of The Buddhist Faith: UB 94:8.1 To become a Buddhist, one merely made public profession of the faith by reciting the Refuge: “I take my refuge in the Buddha; I take my refuge in the Doctrine; I take my refuge in the Brotherhood.” UB94:8.18 The great truth of Siddhartha’s teaching was his proclamation of a universe of absolute justice. He taught the best godless philosophy ever invented by mortal man; it was the ideal humanism and most effectively removed all grounds for superstition, magical rituals, and fear of ghosts or demons. UB 94:8.2 Buddhism took origin in a historic person, not in a myth. Gautama’s followers called him Sasta, meaning master or teacher. While he made no superhuman claims for either himself or his teachings, his disciples early began to call him the enlightened one,the Buddha; later on, Sakyamuni Buddha. 94:7.2 ...Siddhartha made a determined but unavailing fight against the growing caste system. There was a lofty sincerity and a unique unselfishness about this young prophet prince that greatly appealed to the men of those days. He detracted from the practice of seeking individual salvation through physical affliction and personal pain. And he exhorted his followers to carry his gospel to all the world. These extraordinary papers examine how his teachings spread and recount the profound effect Melchizedek had on our world. This week we dive deeper into his influence in China and India as we discuss great teachers of the past like Lao Tse, Confucius, and Buddha. The UB says this about these great teachers of truth: Lao Tse: 94:6.4 Lao-tse also made one of the earliest presentations of the doctrine of returning good for evil: “Goodness begets goodness, but to the one who is truly good, evil also begets goodness.” Confucius: 94:6.9 Confucius (Kung Fu-tze) was a younger contemporary of Lao in sixth-century China. Confucius based his doctrines upon the better moral traditions of the long history of the yellow race, and he was also somewhat influenced by the lingering traditions of the Salem missionaries. His chief work consisted in the compilation of the wise sayings of ancient philosophers. He was a rejected teacher during his lifetime, but his writings and teachings have ever since exerted a great influence in China and Japan.  Buddha: 94:7.5 At Benares Gautama founded his school, and it was during its second year that a pupil, Bautan, imparted to his teacher the traditions of the Salem missionaries about the Melchizedek covenant with Abraham; and while Siddhartha did not have a very clear concept of the Universal Father, he took an advanced stand on salvation through faith — simple belief.
