While he was visiting his family, before heading to Europe, he saw a very old man, literally eating his own human excrement out of hunger. He went to a nearby hotel and asked them what food was available. They had idli, which he bought and gave to the old man. Says Narayanan, "I had never seen a person eating so fast, ever. As he ate the food and his eyes were filled with tears. Those were the tears of happiness." Narayanan quit his job and began to dedicate his life to feeding the poor.  He founded a nonprofit, Akshaya Trust which currently feeds over 400 desperately poor people three meals a day.  The second hour of this week's show will be open phones.
